Real world Fuel Consumption of V6

Featured Replies

I am pleasantly surprised by the number of V6 owners out there and up to now had not considered one due to the scary thought of running costs, especially fuel consumption. What are you guys getting around town and on a run, not indicated, real world figures. Do you find the 60 litre tank a issue. I drive about 20-22K miles a year.

At that sort of annual mileage it's probably going to be around £2000 more a year in fuel to run the V6.

It would be great if they give the V6 the turbo charged FSi engine and/or the 7 speed DQ500 box. Both would be a great plus for the car.

I have a fuel card so am not so bothered with the amount of fuel used but the range of 400 miles or so would bother me.

V6 diesel 3 litre would be a nice option too.

Think 400 mile range would be optimistic I'd say 340-350 between fills would be more accurate

I've done just under 11,000 miles in mine since new and the average is 27.6mpg over the whole period - about a third of that is town driving and the rest longer motorway jorneys.

Town driving with a light right foot is around 20-22mpg.

Longer journeys on motorways at 80mph shows around 32mpg.

Occasionally, with an open road and 10 mins of caning it, I can get below 8mpg :-)

Mine has just over 3,000 miles on the clock, so just run in

Average so far is 28.6mpg, I use it mostly on long runs, around town does it no favours at around the low 20's :(

As I only do around 10k miles PA this is not an issue, but would love a bigger tank, as I normally need to fuel it up after about 300 miles to play safe.

I am a hyper miler and the air is thinner and gravity is less on my planet.

Mine average is 11.5 L = 24.5 mpg atleast I have fun to drive

Mostly country lane driving, with some town. I get 10L/100 (28.5mpg). Sometimes I can get 9 (31mpg), if I am very gentle.

On a long run where the limits are 110KM/h, I can get 8.6 (nearly 33mpg). However if I get onto unlimited autobahn stretches, maybe not as good as this ;)

Above based on fill to fill, not display.

There is a lot of variation; into work is "downhill" i.e. drop of 300m in 30KM (but with ups and downs). Indicated (out by 5% to 10%) varies from 8.5 into work, 10.2 on the return.

Have the same when visiting the Hawthorns ie the West Bromwich Albion football ground in Birmingham I climb almost 200M (well more like 150 perhaps) up from Worcester and the difference in consumption can easily be 20%, especially when helped by 3 long freewheeling stints on motorway back.

Sounds like the new DQ500 7 speed gearbox with "E" economy freewheeling mode would help big time and perhaps Skoda will get it for the 2013 model or soon after maybe.

I'd backup pretty much the figures already given, usually around the 300 mile mark from a tank, average of 26mpg with 2/3rds of the driving round town 1/3rd on motorway, can get to 32mpg on a decent mway run at 80mph (ish), upwards of 90mph see's that back down to 25/26mpg.

All in all it's a little better than my D5 XC90 was and as petrol is cheaper than diesel I'm actually better off so long as I don't get carried away to often :-)

As a result of all of your replies I have scheduled a meeting with the dealer on Saturday to see whether I am too late to change order to the V6. Factoring all of the extra costs (Fuel/Car Tax/Insurance) I know it is going to cost more, but I also know that the smile on my face will be even wider and that I do get what I really hanker for - automatic and 4x4. I can also plan to spend more time working from home to lessen the impact.

Thanks for all your posts.

Fingers crossed.

Why not, it's all relative and you might as well order your car they way you want it.

I suspect change should be ok given lead times, especially in diesel engines in vw group. Should be easy to get someone else to take up your slot.

Cheers

Steve

Hope you are keeping it for a good few years as the depreciation on this will be the biggest killer, oh and the £430 road tax a year :giggle:

Enjoy!!

Ah but think of the pleasure you have with it  I know I am sad, but I like the noise when you start it and love  the noise and creamy delivery when you put your foot down  .

Enjoy your new car, dont dwell on the costs :whew: or the wait, it's worth it.

Wish the Panoramic had been am option when I ordered mine.

Plus the vent seats, would be great on a day like today

I fact it is not as bad as you think.

On PCP over 3 years with 20,000 per year the residual on the TDi was £8,100 and the 3.6 DSG £7,300 a difference of only £800.

Monthly cost about £35 more.

Driving 20,000 per year the extra car tax is only an additonal 1.25p per mile.

Insurance only marginal increase.

The killer will be fuel costs, but just think of that v6 soundtrack, effortless performance, foot wide smile and, for me, the most important aspects a DSG gearbox.

After 4,000 miles my V6 returns 32 mpg average ( over the 4 k ) and 36 mpg on sensible runs ( mix country, M4 and dual carriage way ). As its only just about run in I expect it to improve.

The insurance is less than my Saab 95 Aero ( 2002 ), the tex is less than the new Saab 4 x 4, 95 Aero ( considered ) and the fuel consumption is roughly the same as the old Saab.

Ther Audi , 3 l TFSI engine would have been a plus but who cares

Good choice

I know that feeling!

I am lucky enough to look after a Jag XJ8 for 8 months of the year. Handles like a barge but 3.6 V8 and 27-30MPG! And none of the repair bills :D

Ah but the £800 cost saving on the new car will help with that for a couple of years :-)

It's not only the cost saving but the DSG gearbox as well! If I could spec that on the 170 tdi 4x4 it would be nearer £2,000 saving :-)

See, even more positives, V6 is the way forward, plus the look on the faces of 'hot hatch', BMW and Audi drivers you have just left for dust........priceless! :-)

Plus you get MASSIVE front brakes  , no mention of this in the brochure.
