Oh Joy of Joys!

Featured Replies

As per title after my 2.0PD chucking it's turbo and ancilerys not so long back I'm now at 55k and my clutch and a potenial DMF are all knackered?!?!

I'm hoping at some time my luck will change I've had the car since June last year and apart from the engine itself most of the engine "bolt on's" have been replaced!

I'm now hoping that when the gearbox is removed that the DMF or one of other components has screwed the clutch as...... "the clutch only has a 9k warranty", but in my opinion 55k for a clutch is appalling!!

So I'm not having much luck with my first Skoda!

BIG Nick

Nick your not alone mate, 40k petrol vrs DMF is knackered the garage are doing everything to avoid replacing it, even replacing gearbox parts :giggle:

I have also been informed that the started motor tends to go as well at the same time, i've already had a new starter motor.

I got the Skoda due to their reliability but my Vx Astravan which a family member now has was more reliable!!

It has 200k plus on it with original turbo/clutch/exhaust well the only parts it had was window wiper motor and coolant pipe!

Sorry to hear your news. Does seem low for clutch to knacker but it's those useless DMF,s that screw everything up.

Hope you get it sorted.

Sorry to hear that Nick. A turbo and clutch should last a lot longer than that.

I'm in a similar boat to you. My car has 46000 miles on it an the turbo needs replacing.

Personally I think VAG have lost the plot over the last 5 or so years. The reliability / build quality has gone down hill IMO. I'm very dissapointed in the Skoda.

"the clutch only has a 9k warranty"

And they can point to this in writing in the warranty document they gave you when you bought the car..? ;) The warranty is a binding contract, and they can't go about "inserting" terms as they wish after the fact. (assuming a dealer purchase here)

In addition to the warranty, you could argue that the car did not remain in a satisfactory condition for a reasonable period, and that the dealer should make a contribution.

Mate at work clutch has just gone on a 57 plate Focus with 55K on it (owned since new). Clutches should be lasting much longer than this really.

VAG reliability has never been that good imo, and I've owned three. None are a patch on the VX we have owned for 4.5 years, I think a lot gets written in magazines that is untrue and people tend to take it for gospel. Most cars have there faults though, not just Skoda etc.

My clutch died pretty early on in my FL vRS, after only 15,000 miles. The seal on the gear box hadn't been installed right, and the clutch got ruined. It had been making noises pulling away and reversing from about 5,000. The first garage (where I bought it from) told me it was my driving style........... :wonder:

Then Redditch Skoda had it in and sorted it the following day. At 26,000 it's now making the same noise, so until I find a MK1 vRS, I've got to get this one straight before I get rid.......

You mention 2.0PD in your post, but your profile says '2.0TDI FL' which would mean you have a CR unit?

Not directly related to your woes I know, but just thought I'd raise a question :)

Nah mine is an FL but it has the PD engine in it.

Mine is an 09 plate so the first of the FL's.

BIG Nick :)

Ah fair enough, just thought I'd check. Will have been with the delays on the CR140 unit then, I'd imagine.

Sorry to hear about your clutch/DMF woes though. Warranty claim though, I'd imagine? I'm sure you'll have a fight over the old wear & tear argument, but one could argue along 'not fit for purpose' lines....

I'm shocked to hear this mate :( our car has been knackered since we bought it..i really wish we walked away when the mrs said  anyway i think ours has 40,389 not exactly sure and the DMF has excessive play according to a local transmission specialist in Falkirk it makes what i can only describe is a clutch release bearing noise it has been there since we bought it and had several visits to the supplying dealer of the car about it, our local dealer who has been pretty decent and fair about it has replaced the clutch release bearing, and replaced the bearings and needles in the gearbox but its now back in for an evap problem with the fuel tank and they are going to look at the clutch again, personally i want the dmf and clutch replaced.

Oh did you have problems with your starter motor??

  • Author

Exactly! The dealer told me the clutch has a 9k warranty but if the DMF or any other component damaged the clutch it can be under warranty as subsequent damage.

It aint been right for a while but couldn't put me finger on the problem.

The clutch jumped on occasions when starting off from 1st, then when I was carrying quite a heavy load in the back the clutch slipped in 3rd at 2.5k.

Then got the horribe metal on metal noise from the clutch plate where it's worn down to te rivets.

Find out tomorrow what they find as they couldn't get it in until then so it's currently disgraced and been put in the corner of the driveway as currently it's the worst car I've owned for all the TLC it needs!

Had no problems with start motor, always starts first turn!

When a DMF goes the metal fillings go into the starter and that fails too (there's magnets inside the starter................)

ahh that will be why my new starter motor is failing again and staying on.

This is an interesting point. Do you know if the Skoda warranty (assuming this is the warranty you are referring to) covers consequential loss?

For example, if a part fails and subsequently damages another part is the other part also covered under the warranty?

The reason I ask is I have had a bad experience of this in the past and noticed recently that the aftermarket warranty I have on my vRS also contains a clause in it stating consequential loss of any kind is not covered.

I'm referring to Skoda's 3yr 60k warranty.

I have told by my dealer and assured that if the DMF or any other component still covered has caused damage to a part not covered (clutch) that it will be replaced as subsequent damage due to the covered part failing.

This dealer is already very weary of me due to an ongoing problem I've had with my "check bulb" warning light (basically it lies) and the car was due in on Thursday of this week to have RLS replaced.

But now it's in for a "bit" more work.

I will kick off big time if I try and get screwed as when it comes to my car if I aint happy with work done or costings it's been known that courtesy car's have been held to ransome! Not the way things should be handled but hey I got the answer I wanted.

Cheers

BIG Nick :)

Thanks Nick, I have no doubt that a Skoda warranty is more comprehensive than my aftermarket (Autoguard) warranty and that you will have no problems claiming for consequential loss if needed.

I was just curious to understand if the usual clauses were part of the Skoda small print.

I'll probably request a copy of their literature to better understand what is and isn't covered so that I can swap to the Skoda warranty when the one that was provided with my car expires.

Good luck

Well the car has been dropped off this morning after a awful drive to the dealer considering I got stopped on a hill @ traffic lights!

Sounded like the gearbox was gonna depart!

Still fingers now crossed!

Cheers

Got ours back yesterday and surprise surprise the charcoal canister is knackered but they arent sure if the Skoda used car warranty will cover it, they questioned us about over filling the fuel tank which i knew about way back in my early driving days and from my dad drumming it into me "stop at the first click or i'll slapp yeh"

So they are away to speak to Skoda UK about it being done under warranty which personally it should as it seems the previous owner had been filling it to the top and some :dull:

Regards to the clutch lmao oh my days apparently "its well within its paramaters" didnt know it should sound like a tractor on idle and when reversing it slips really badly even on level ground, when in 5th or 6th stick your foot down at 60-70mph there is a thump and the clutch judders yeh thats well within parameters eh, solution to the problem keep driving till it gets worse and bring it in. :wonder:

I give up and desperately want rid of this car so expect some for sale threads in a few months.

I would try another dealer as some are hopeless when dealing with warranty claims and just can't be bothered with the hassle

Well.........

Car went in yesterday morning got a call from the dealer a few hours later saying, "the clutch has been completely trashed and in turn it has hot spotted the DMF". So not under any kind of warranty.

Advised me that it will cost just under £1400 but the service manager effectively gave me trade rate so said it will cost you just under £900.

I sat and slowly got annoyed by the whole saga so the wheelie bin outside the office got the full force of my frustration.

I then decided to ring Skoda and see what they thought.......

First person I spoke to was a complete jobs worth and was most unhelpful, so I sat a while longer then rang back and got someone decent, I explained the situation and he said he would contact the dealer for their thoughts and to obtain some pictures of the faulty parts.

A few hours passed I got a phone call back from Skoda..........

They had looked at the pictures and had a second opinion from their techs at customer services and everyone agreed that it was down to driving style that had torn my clutch to shreds, as I have never taken a clutch out I could only put it down to me buying it a year old with 13k on the clock so whatever a-hole had driven it from new didn't know how to use a clutch and it took until now to completely fall apart.

I was then very surprised by Skoda as the guy said, "any dealer giving that sort of discount to a customer is obviously a good customer and we are prepared to match the discount".

So in all I've had to accept I have no knowledge of It's life before me and now only getting a £400 bill.

Not bad I don't think.

Cheers all sorry for the long post.

I would call that a good result - at least you know you have a new clutch and DMF that will not be abused so should last a good 100K miles.

I await my outcome but having had the car only 9 months i highly doubt its been us thats knackered the clutch even the head tech mentioned it (at least someone's on our wave length and being realistic  )still no word on the charcoal canister either
