Fixed Towbar and Reversing Sensors

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Been looking at getting a towbar for my Yeti and seeing all the discussion I thought I would add my peyyworth!

This company seems to have got it all sorted, I read their installation guide (PDF file) and it looked very comprehensive and covered the re-programming as well.

Yeti towbars

Hope is of help to anybody.

Was told in Oct mine was to be delivered in Feb, got a call Monday gone to say it's here!! Now got to sort out the finance!!

Cheers

My twopence worth:

Coincidentally, I phoned these poeple this afternoon - very helpful although I got the inpression they would not need to recode after installation which made me a tad bit suspicious having read numerous (and very confusing at times!) posts on the Forums

I requested a Westfalia detachable bar when I bought my Yeti from Claybank Skoda in Eccles. They had it fitted by PF Jones - the first one they had done. The car did not have tow bar prep from the factory (the car was a cancelled order that I took to avoid a long wait).

Both PF Jones and Claybank said that the car couldn't be reprogrammed without the full tow bar electrics from the factory, so in my case, it doesn't disable the rear fog light or reversing sensors when a trailer is attached. Nor does it change the stability program accordingly. Yes, it's bloody annoying when reversing, but to have the electrics updated (which means adding an extra loom right through to the engine compartment involving removing all trim on the passenger side of the car) & computer reprogramming, they have quoted another £260 which seems excessive for the amount of towing I do.

They cocked up fitting the blanking plate in the rear skirt, though Claybank have subsequently corrected that, and the 13 pin socket wasn't fitted properly allowing it to fill up with water when in use on wet roads. PF Jones have resealed it with silicone and it seems ok at the moment, but I'm keeping an eye on that.

Moral of the story..... if you want to have a tow bar, order a car complete with factory tow bar preparation, and don't be the guinea pig for having the bar itself fitted.

Taked from the other thread, and hope it helps here:

Recoding.

Think about it this way:

If you decide that you want your home computer to do something new, such as a specialist task, you have to give it a programme to do that task. So you add a new programme from a disc/download. It won't do it automatically.

Well your car is that home computer, so you have to tell it's internal computer you want it to do something different, and for that you have to reprogramme it.

Simple really, isn't it?

Any roller figures must be at the wheel, including transmission losses. So the shaft figure is an arbitary projection only.

Only with the engine out on a test bed can an accurate flywheel figure be obtained - or am I missing something here?

Only thinking aloud while waiting for my SM to travel down to warmer climes in S Wales :dull:

I have the Westfalia detachable with 13 pin electrics done using the Skoda loom (no towbar prep). I do not have the extra passenger side loom, my understanding is you only need it for the caravan charging circuitry.

It was fitted by my local Skoda dealer, they re-programmed the electronics to switch off the car reversing sensors and foglamp and show the trailer graphic on the Bolero screen.

So it can be done.

Follow the lead of Countryboy in post number 16 and go to Phil Taylor Towbars, the job will be done properly, using the right kit, it will be programmed properly and all at a sensinble price, NOT the rip off prices that Skoda dealers charge for work they don't know how to do !! (Phil Taylor will do the job in less than 2 hours)

I spoke to P F Jones when I was planning my tow bar, they wanted to use a 7 way relay and were not sure about 'reprogramming' said it would cost about £50 and would have to be done by a dealer. In the end I used MDS towbars who came to my home and did it, fixed swan-neck, 13pin electrics including caravan charging etc, repropgramming all for £355! - and it all works brilliantly.

Thanks Tom.... that's exactly what I wanted. I wonder if your dealer actually fitted it themselves, or did they contract it out? I only found out that mine had been fitted "by a specialist" when I complained about poor workmanship!

Contact MDS Towbars on 01706 642 302 - they would come to you in Cumbria, - I paid them £355 for a fixed Westfalia Swan neck, full 13 pin electrics including caravan charging and full reprograming, all done in about 3 1/2 hours. I suspect it's the same company as quoted by Rich T in post #25 above, they are very good.

My dealer did it themselves. It was only the second one they had done (and the first for that particular mechanic).

Had mine fitted today.

Witter fixed bracket, dedicated electrics and programmed, for £325 all in.

Everything works as promised.

I have the Amunsden SatNav and have just noticed it now has a new option to silence the bleeper when reversing without a trailer but still have the radar image.

I would recommend 'NWT center' they got right first time!
