Router/Modem recommendations

Featured Replies

I have a belkin router and i had it running at my parents where i may as well send a letter internets that slow and it used to drop out, i now have it at my new house where its a really srong connection and it still drops out,

how do i tell what channels other people round estate are using as i have a feeling it one of them knocking it out

Download a program called inSSIDer, will scan your local area and tell you what channels people are using :)

ZyXel have some good products out there too.

Yep, Draytek or Zyxel. I'd say Cisco (not Linksys Cisco, proper Cisco) as well, but they're a pain to set up unless you're familiar with IOS.

+ insidder is good :)

I have Wifi Analyzer on my android phone, very useful as you can wander around a building/office and see what happens to signal strength and any interference.

or NetStumbler, or a pocket PC....

Good choice

Rock solid stable kit, in my experience.

Which model did you opt for, out of interest?

I got the Draytech Vigor 2600G second hand as it suited my wallet at the mo. When I upgrade I'll likely be going for the 2710 or whatever has replaced it. 112 hours uptime & counting!

Woohoo :D

Mine's been up for about 4 months so far!

Off topic - you got a Border Terrier?

I do. Well remembered. She used to be on my avatar but I changed it to Salvador Dali's 'Great Masturbater' after it was suggested that folk with private plates were ******s.

Maybe time to put her back.

DO NOT CIRCUMVENT THE SWEAR FILTER

I have a spare 2800 ;-)

My 2820 has a current uptime of 2782:13:31 hours (about a 3rd of a year). It should be much more but I applied a firmware update a while ago

Unfortunately mine has started to cut out. Not as often as the Belkin however. The seller is sending me another. This was a relatively old unit I bought - just need to keep going until I can afford to splash out. I tried to apply a firmware upgrade but it wasn't having it.

I have had issues with my last few routers dropping out

Turned out to be a dodgy power supply, I was using the one that came with an earlier router, didn't figure it out until it failed completely!!

Should someone explain the different type of wireless g, n ect ect I believe n being the better I'm about to go with bt fibre optic and they've sent me a router don't know what it is.

Your router will almost certainly be an N model, not a G model. It certainly won't be B.

If it has three aerials, it will be n.

Most routers from BT are Wireless 'G' & 'N' for compatibility with existing equipment. Your wireless card in your computer could be one or the other or maybe capable of both types. I recently upgraded my virgin media broadband to 30mbit and they installed a new wireless super hub which has both G & N capability also. My computers are still running 'G' cards so it's not problem just switching the router to 'G' and back to 'N' when I get the new 'N' internal cards. Just makes everything nice and easy.

A, B, G, N are "different" not better... they've got different uses.

In our office we've got a general N-spec for local access, but we've also got a point to point link running over A.
