Winter Tyres VRS

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Ive been reading numrous posts and just confussing myself even further.

Here's my question can I just fit winter tyres to my standard alloys 204/40/17's or should I change to 15" steel wheels with winter tyres?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can fit them to your alloys.

17" might workout more expensive though.

There are steel wheels on ebay for £199 assuming Ill get tyres for approx £60 each so thats £440 for wheels and tyres approx.

Has anyone else managed to find this setup cheaper?

How much did you pay for your winter tyres on your standard alloys. Ive had quotes for £125+ vat

could only get 205/45/17's but skoda were quite happy with that size, (speedo is now 1mph fast instead of 3mph fast..) fitted by my local skoda garage, and yes they were quite expensive at £115 each, but they are storing my summer tyres for free, and its £7 per wheel to fit.

if you want to risk the cheap sunny's they are on ebay with 3 day delivery times in 205/40/17's at £90 each...

anyone running the sunny's yet

Just how useless are the Conti's in the snow anyway?

I don't know about others but I find my Conti's aren't that good in the dry :giggle:

These are going on Bert soon. His winter shoes

Bert's new shoes

look good, I've heard some good reviews :)

in a recent tyre test, they scored -30 something in snow out of 100, because they couldn't get the vehical to the start line to do the test! :giggle:

My Passat on 235/45x17 ContiSports could just about manage snow covered flat roads, any snow covered inclines and you were stuck. It was as bad as my nieghbours rwd 320d.

Worst was clear untreated frosty roads, the lack of grip was frightening for clear road.

They now sit out winter in my garage.

Cheers

This weekend will see Kwik-Fit swap the summer conti's on my octavia vrs for some 225/40 18 Marangoni Meteo HPs. All 4 for a smidge over £415. I've said it before but I like my 18" alloys a lot so to swap to 16" steelies or 16" VAG alloys just to get slightly cheaper winter tyres seems a waste.

I went down the 16" as I reckon they will last me about 3 winters and I won't have to pay £40/£50 a time to keep swopping from one tyre to another and If I don't have a need for the wheels anymore I'll sell them

Me too mate, I bought the vRS because I like the way it looks (& drives!), seems a shame to put small wheels on it for 5ish months a year.

Mines at Kwik Fit next week aswell -

4 x Conti Wintercontacts TS830P's on 18's, £650 fitted.

1st time on proper winter tyres, so will be interesting to see the difference.

I bought 4x 16" polo alloys off eBay for £80, and 4 used winter tyres with 5-6mm tread left for £100

I don't want to alarm you, but a lot of these "winter tyres with 5-6mm tread" get sent in from Europe because that is when they stop using them. A winter tyre's best life is only from 8>5mm.

Think I might invest in these. Any opinions?

Cheap and a good tyre when new, but at 3.5mm tread I'm already thinking about my next tyres.

Their best days are behind them I'm afraid.

True enough but I suspect part worn premium tyres will be better than budget ones with dreadful reviews. :giggle:

I plumped for these ones instead, slightly better tread, same price, good reviews.

Worn and punture repaired! Think you were wise to avoid.

Getting confused reading through the general Winter Tyre posting (14 pages and growing!). What size steels are people using for a Fabia 2 vRS and what size tyres to go on them? Skodaparts website has a winterkit for £599.99 + £30 delivery, but no details of what sizes and makes they are.

I would avoid the part worn items, my winters have two tread bars, one at the obligatory 1.6 mill, and 1 at 4 mill when they start to loose their ability on snow! next winter I will be rotating, so the new ones on the rear of my car now drive the front next year.

to above poster, my tyres were supplied by my skoda dealer, and are 205/45/17's, they said they are fine, I calibrated using GPS, it used to read 3-4 mph fast, it now reads 1 mph fast... so no big issue, and my insurance company are fine too. :)
