Im thinking of getting myself Vagcom. Am I right in thinking that I can download for free and just buy a cable fr eBay? Advice please! :)

Yes you can .... however it won't work on a MKII Octavia, for that you need the pukka Ross-Tech interface @ approx £260

I got my VCDS from (link to illegal software removed) for £78, release 10.6.0 and it does all I wanted, on my 2010 Octavia 2 Scout .You have to use it only with the cable supplied and it is fully supported by them if you have any problems. Allowed me to set corner fogs, rain window close and auto door close after 15mph. a fantastic tool ,able to check the car for any errors on complete scan.

Removal of link to illegal software

Which is still a hacked version of Ross-Tech's

Agreed takes away the damn hard work Ross Tech do.

Their technical support that comes in with the price is worth it's weight in gold.

How was your experience with this company? I don't see a street address or a buy online facility on their website?

[edit ]Their ebay account has zero products for sale and apparently 0% satisfaction. Much as I would like a good deal I will not be taking this one.

Could google but worth asking...

Is it just Rosstech that sells theircables kits, or is this available from a few places online? If so where is best / cheapest :giggle:

They have a number of UK outlets, Gendan being the main one.

Dont get the hacked versions, you are stuck with that version and cannot update or anything. With the pukka version you get free updates and support when you get stuck. Yes the pukka version costs more, but its worth it in the long run.

All going to be the same price. Mine came www.ilexa.co.uk

I had no problems with them, delivered by free post in 5days .I paid with paypal. The write up implied that it was a one off not able to be upgraded ,but not a hacked version as the Chinees versions. The booklet you get with it explains exactly how to set it up very well.

I don't undersatand why Rosstech do not put out a version that allows control of the vehicle options only , the light version is not good enogh for the car owner, and the full version is not justifiable unless you are a car repair person.

If you can't afford it, don't get it, in my book. Or save up for it.

That is your opinon, and your entitled to it, I do not need or want the full diagnostic facility. I take my car to the garage for any repair or sevice. It annoys me when a car comes with functions that are not available to the owner without having a computer hook up to get them.

If you think that VCDS is expensive (which IMO it is not) then price up the similar type of software and hardware needed for other marques, only then will you realize how cheap it actually is.

Then give a local member who has VCDS 'a drink' for releasing your cars full potential!

apart from reading codes and putting out service lights, can this device also activate things like the corner fogs and other extras like that.

Yes ... and a whole lot more

Living in Kent that may be easy for you , but in rural Scotland it is no so easy. Also the local dealer said it would cost to try, and could not say for sure if the things I wanted were able to be activated.

I have never had a car in my lifetime where any thing hardwired could not be switched off or on by using the manual, to set switches in various positions.Maybe it is a sign of the times!!!.
