tdi - which lowering springs sit right?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

sorry for creating yet another lowering springs topic but I've searched and searched and am lost... a lot of topics are about vrs but I have a tdi so hoping for some tdi driver's experience here.

I already had a topic more specifically about eibach springs but my local suspension dealer doesn't sell them anymore because of a lot of complaints (apparently the drop is not consistent, sometimes it's only 10mm instead of the promised 30mm)

So the search continues... h&r seems to be popular amongst vrs drivers but couldn't find anything on tdi.

Drop 30 to 40 mm and most importantly : boot should not hang lower then front, I really don't like the way that looks.

cheers

hi Matt,

thanks for the pics, looks really nice (and low!!)... you would think that it's lower then 30mm!

I do believe koni springs are -35mm, could that be? At least that's what I could find online.

on the pics it looks like the boot is slightly lower then the front, is that possible or just my idea?

Koni is also the brand my suspension dealer recommended, but he didn't had any customers yet with a Octavia 1U, how was the behaviour on stock shocks? I have about 50.000km now (31K miles).

cheers

PS love your wheels, really suit the car!

Heres a before pic :giggle:

DSCF0032.jpg

This is the before/after measurements

685mm front before

645mm front after

=40mm drop

675mm rear before

640mm rear after

=35mm drop

The rear arches are a little lower at the top than the fronts, giving the illusion of the rear being lower but the sills were the same height all the way along.

I never ran mine on standard dampers, I went straight to the KW Sport Dampers.

The 17"s didnt last long as the ride was too firm with them on but just right with the OEM 16"

Thx for the detailed measures :-) looks like a good choice then... extra question : seems like the boot is even lower on the pictures with standard wheels, was your trunk loaded in those pics?

anyone experience with h&r springs on a tdi (as so many vrs owners are happy with them )?

Cheers

Totally OT: but where were those first set of images taken? It looks like the coast road to Bridport (from Weymouth)....

They were taken from the hills above Penistone over looking the Peak District, Langsett Resevoir is just in view on the right of the picture

Ok...I'm a TDI owner and I have a question...as I really dont want the 35mm drop I'm wondering if vRS springs could be used on a TDI Estate as I'd prefer the 20mm drop.

Not unless you want some dodgy handling.... The TDI is somewhat heavier at the front end than the vRS.

Don't know about the estate by my hatch is fine with vRS springs on (weight difference is only about 50kg IIRC).

Just make sure that you fit sports dampers (I have Billstein OEM sport spec) and vRS bump stops, as they are shorter.

Oh, in that case I stand corrected.

Oh, in that case I stand corrected.

I think that the people that say it won't work either haven't tried it, or didn't change the shocks and bump stops as these have a big effect on the final result. I looked at the weights of the cars in my handbook before going down this route and came to the conclusion that there wasn't a huge weight difference between the TDI Elegance and the vRS so gave it a try. I have been happy with the results, but others may still feel differently.

Could a complete set (shocks + springs) from RS 1U2 be used on a TDI 1U5?

Hmm...I was checking ETKA now and I can't seem to find anything that would show a difference between hatch and estate shocks and springs. Can anyone that is more familiar with ETKA check this for me?

Well the mk2 estate is only 15 Kg heavier then the hatch so can't believe the mk1 would be much different(you could get the hatch to weigh the same by adding extras le sunroof)

SO...there really shouldn't be any problem with mounting RS shocks'n'springs on my TDI estate?

My brother fitted vogtland shocks and springs on his Tdi estate. Gave a really nice drop and handles rather well. Was £250 from dpm performance :-)

I was looking at Vogtlands also...but atm the budget is kinda really low as I have other expenses to look after. But I kinda found original RS suspension with only 40000 miles on it as the owner wanted to go lower at that time. And I really need to change my suspension, because my Octy has 155000 miles on it's originals and the drive feels like an ocean liner :D

I think that the rear shock mounts, and possibly rear shocks may be different on the estate, but I can't remember for sure.

I need to know for sure before I try to buy that suspension set...

Damn...that means i really need to get the suspension for the estate... :(

The difference in those may be tiny. They should physically fit, I can't recommend doing it because I don't know if it will make it handle like crap or not.

Be interesting to hear if it does or not. My brother was eying up the suspension from my vrs for his Bora TDI when I replaced with coilovers.

I think at this moment anything i make will make the Octy handle better. Now it drives klike an oceanliner over the bumbs on turns :D 250000km of punishement on the original suspension has done the job well :p
