When did diesel get so expensive?

Featured Replies

I'm sure last time I looked (not that long ago) it was about 4-5p more per litre than unleaded. Now it seems to be about 10-11p more. Why?!

Because unleaded has gone down for some reason. Diesel hasn't changed in my area for a while now.

13p difference around Sheffield in some fuel stations :'(

Because there are more diesels on the road, which generally use less fuel so the government have got to screw the taxes out of someone.

In winter oil is used for fuel for heating, so because Diesel is more oil based, the price goes up. Happens every year.

Sums it up.

I think its more likley the fuel companys.

As far as I know the Duty rate is the same for petrol or diesel.

Its about 7p more around my local area.

gap always gets wider in the winter months # supply and demand I suppose as it is created from the same fraction of crude as heating oil. That gives the oil companies their excuse anyway.

Makes sense. Just happened to notice it driving past a few petrol stations last night.

I used to price watch when I first started making biodiesel but I dont even notice the filling stations when I drive by now. :giggle:

I passed a garage today with unleaded £133.9, Derv at £149.9 :o

So per mile my unleaded octavia is cheaper to run than the works diesel. Pretty much confirms the next car wont be a diesel.

I agree, Gadgetman.

Factor in the extra cost of diesel-engined cars;

Factor in the DPF issues;

Factor in the recent advances made in petrol engines;

I think diesel has had its day :(

That is until the petrol engine is the most common again, then guess what will happen? yep it will be dearer than diesel again (like it is throughout the rest of Europe)

I really don't buy the seasonal adjustment in price because of heating oil. The few people and businesses I know that heat with oil and the school I used to be a governor at buy their heating oil before the winter when it's cheaper and hope there is enough in the tank to get most of the way through the winter.

Go back to the years leading up to the 1990's and diesel was always a lot less than 4 star, then diesel cars became more popular and the diesel moved up to the same price as unleaded. Now diesel is more expensive in the UK, in most other European countries diesel is cheaper.

Fuel prices are manipulated by the oil companies, governments and speculators.

AA report: http://www.theaa.com/onlinenews/allaboutcars/fuel/2011/november2011.pdf

Don't forget it's Americans as well, vast numbers of people not on mains gas. Same as anything, it's demand against supply.

The price in diesel this time of year is due to global increases in the purchase of heating oil, a lot of which is just plain diseasel!

Still depends how many miles you do.

I get 55 mpg at 20,000 = 363 gal = 1636lt @£1.39 = £2274

mate has the same car in poof fuel and ger 42 mpg

20000 = 476 gal = 2142 lt @£1.33 = £2849

so I save 575 per year. over 3 years = £1725.

car cost £100 more but get have back (at least) at trade in time, so costs me an extra £500 to buy.

therefore sav e£1275 or £408 per year - no contest

Which is fine, but very few of our members who have diesels do more than 10-12k/year - making the saving almost negligible when you factor in most will be urban or extra-urban.

I read this all the time, what makes you think the same advances aren't being made in diesel engines?

Being that theres got to be as many diesels as petrols on the road these days, the same amounts of research have got to be going into both sorts of engines.

I noticed the gap is going up a lot right now. More than in previous years?

Also that UL has come down a bit. Got SU today for 134.9 which ,although cheaper than it has been, is still ridiculous.

which I said in my first sentance "Still depends how many miles you do."

The point being that putting down any argument without an explanation is a worthless waste of space.

For instance the " diesels are too expensive to run" is utter garbage without understanding the type and amount of motoring that is involved.

And I agree, but far too many of our members have a diesel when a petrol will be much cheaper for them.

The break point used to be about 12500k+ then get a diesel. Any less then a petrol is cheaper to run.

Don't forget there is a 3p per litre tax rise due in January!

That whole winter demand thing is rubbish tbh... It's not winter everywhere on earth at once you know!

Never mind the price of diesel.. I'm horrified at the price of vegetable oil. I remember the days of filling up a shopping trolley with the stuff at asda for 17p a litre and standing outside in the car park and pouring it in my car.

90% of humans live in the Northern hemisphere.

And I doubt they'll go through with the rises. They'll be magnanimously delayed.

Fuel duty is a self defeating tax at the moment. Tax take from fuel is down despite prices being at an all time high.
