Diesel noise reduction

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just had my remap which im thrilled to bits with :-)

It's revealed a foreseeable issue for me tho - even more diesel noise!

Is there a way I can reduce this cos atm it's like the pleasure pain advert - great being able to rev higher and sustain torque but the extra noise and vibration of revving to 4.5k is getting to me :-/

Does anyone have any suggestions? Would changing the oil make any difference?

Thanks in advance :-)

Save some diesel and don't rev to 4.5k maybe? :giggle:

It's ridiculously loud even at 3.75k tbh & lots of vibration - when u rev a petrol up it sounds nice, the furby just sounds in pain :-/

I dunno, maybe I just need to get used to it, ive come from a petrol turbo after all

Try v power diesel if your not already using it makes mine noticeably quieter and more refined when driving.diesels are clattery things at the best of times. Wait till u start it up first thing in the morning when it's -15 outside :-D

Good idea about the V-power I'll give that a go :-)

Was gonna put a green cotton panel filter on it, is that gonna make the diesel noise worse? I'm hoping induction noise will make it sound more sporty

Dont put after market filter in it lets all the crap through straight into turbo few on ere have had problems.

Don't bother with a panel filter, threads have popped up here lately about their poor filteration letting crap through and knackering turbos.

At the end of the day, it's a diesel and it's never going to sound as good as a petrol, an exhaust can help it sound better than standard though.

Can u recommend me an exhaust that won't kill my turbo

Milltek cat back

Looks lovely with the twin pipes adds a nice rumble

Problem is with a diesel you just cant make them sound good

For the best sound out of a diesel you want a hybrid turbo! My stage 2 turbo dynamics hybrid gave off an awesome roar which no exhaust or induction kit could come close to

Sadly all diesels sound like canal boats. Make sure youve got the correct oil and clean oil/air filters first  perhaps check your engine mounts if its vibrating that bad

Id imagine changing the exhaust will make it louder? IMO the standard pipe is good enough, not worth couple of hundred pounds on replacing. Dont even think exhausts on a diesel will benifit anything other than being noisey... correct me if im wrong

V-power says it all really, pay more for nothing. Diesel is from crude oil, its 5hite basically, unlike unleaded where you can buy 'super' with the benifit of having 98 RON instead of 95 means a motor will run with a higher octane ratio thus more power. If you ask me v-'power' is a load of b0ll0cks. Its probably the same diesel with a different sticker...

Maybe chuck on some sound deaning under the bonnect and around the fire wall, might quiet it down a little

Piper cat back sounds nice, cheap too!

If you want to reduce the noise in the engine bay, I've seen sound proofing foam around the engine cover. It was from another VAG car, but can't remember which. I think it did make a difference to noise.

Edit: Here you go - http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/137199-sound-deadening-jacket/ There are pics on page 2.

I forgot I had one of those fitted! Yes it does reduce the background din when cruising, but at 4500rpm, it doesn't really make that much difference.

Hi, my other car's a Golf R32, so driving the fabia diesel is so noisy it's unreal!

I have found that using BP Ultimate does make the car sound a tiny bit smoother and less strained, BUT it's not a huge difference.. ITS STILL A DIESEL and will always sound like one...

BP ultimate does make the car feel faster though, so it's worth using it for that alone!

I also considered adding extra sound deadening to the underside of the bonnet - some Dynamat. They do a special high temperature version specifically made for under bonnet insulation. But I've never gotten around to doing it because I've just gotten used to the transit van noise now after 2.5years of ownership.

I've also currently experimenting with the '2stroke' oil thing, were people have said adding 2stroke oil with each fill up of diesel makes the engine smoother and quieter.... Well I can tell you that so far, after 600miles, that it doesn't work! It still sounds and feels like a diesel!

Lol about the 2 stroke oil! I'll know to give that one a miss ;-)

After driving it again today ive decided I might hav been a bit of a drama queen earlier - it's not all that bad I spose :-)

The VAG sound proofing sounds like a good idea though, I'll look into that :-) I'll also be checking the service dates on it cos can't remember when it was last done (mileage wise) - speaking of which, does the computer tell you when your next service is due??

Piper cat back sounds nice, cheap too!

no cat and zero boxes  no quiet tho... :p

Mufflerectomy - cheap option and sound good imo

Get a petrol, or a V6/8 diesel instead :)
