Strange tyre wear issue, Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

i've recently changed from a 3.2v6 TT to a Fabia VRS. I much prefer the VRS and this is my first trip onto the forum (and my first skoda) :) Anyway I have just replaced the front tyres and whilst checking the others fully found that the inner surface of the rear tyres is wearing unevenly. This isnt like any type of wear I have seen before, the wear goes in lumpy waves, so as if the tyres are boucing down the road so a couple of inches are at say 4mm, then the next couple of inches at 3mm, then 4, 3, 4 etc etc. The middle and outer of the tyre is fine and it's eaxactly the same on both sides. It doesnt look to be any kind of tyre casing failure so must be something on the set up of the car. I've seen a few mentions of worn bushes, bearing etc but nothing that describes this type of wear. The tyre dealer had never seen anything like it before either. Effectively the tyres arent round any longer and it explains the road noise (which I thought was normal as had seen online it suffers from tyre roar).

Any suggestions from anyone? Much appreciated.

Ok, so further reasearch sauggests my rear tyres are "cupped" on the inside edges. I can find traces of people mentioning this as common on lots of VAG cars and Fabias but not what is likely to be causing it.

Am I understanding you correctly? The tread depth varies between the limits across a number of tread blocks, but each individual block is worn evenly? If so I've got no idea.

OTOH if every block was 4mm on the leading edge and 3mm on the trailing edge, that would be the common "saw-toothing" issue, which is caused by frequent hard braking.

If you're on Dunlops or Pirellis, give up on "why" and fit some decent tyres instead!

Hi, not every tread block is worn evenly, it is in a recurring patten, like the picture here http://wwww.falkentire.com/images/tire_damage/large/ohtsu_scallop_wear.jpg

They are Kumho's, seen quite a lot of discussion about them wearing unevenly as well.

Having put two new summer tyres on my XC90, then 4 winters on it and two new front on the VRS in the last 8 weeks i'll have to remortgage my house to replace anymore.

Hi Bob,

I have a similar issue on mine, to the point I'm going to have to throw away my (hardly worn anywhere else) rear tyres soon  :'( Goodyear Eagle F1's, so a decent bit of rubber too.

As a matter of interest, is your car running a Rear Anti Roll Bar? I've been suggested that it could be rear bushes, bent rear beam, or something else altogether, but mine possibly only started the wearing since my RARB was fitted - hard to know for sure, but tempted to take it off for a test period.

Also, tyre pressures are key - if they're too low, the tyres seem to scrub badly..

We'll get to the bottom of it eventually  Hopefully :|

Previous owner handbrake happy? Egged wheels?

Hi i work in a garage and see this alot especially cheaper tyres and also on the rear. Basically the tyre has gone out of shape. This also can cause tyre noise almost like the sound a wheel bearing has gone if the tyre quite out of shape. The tyre dosnt wear like this due to any form of driving style. Hope this helps.

No non standard parts (anti roll bar etc) and the previous owner seemed very sensible so I dont think they were handbraking all over the place. It's done 98k so poss the suspension is worn. I'll run it for a bit and see how it goes. Just wondered if it was common on all Fabias

I had this on another car and new shock absorbers cured it

Get your suspension geometry checked

Funnily enough I had a set of Kumhos on my old Civic VTi and they wore like this. The Kumhos on my Grandis Warrior have also worn the same.

Carl.
