fabia front wheel bearing

Featured Replies

I have recently bought my daughter a fabia as a first car. I knew the front brake pads were badly worn so set about changing them. The pad fitted into the piston side of the caliper ok but the outboard pad i could not fit as there was not enough room between the disk and the caliper. On further inspection it looked as if the disk had moved outboard. I removed the disk and found that the wheel bearing had moved outboard of the hub assy and the bearing was only in the housing by 10mm. On looking at the manual the wheel bearing is only held in with a serated ring and not a circlip like most cars. Due to the shape of the cv joint it is possible for the cv joint to sit inside of the hub assy by quite a way.

The whole thing was corroded so had not happened overnight and the last time the brakes were looked at was 2 years earlier by the previous owner.

I am just writing this to see if this was a known issue or a one off. The only way i found this problem was that a pad had worn to the metal and that the only thing that seems to hold the whole assy on, stopping the wheel and driveshaft coming out is a serated ring and not a circlip.

Any thoughts?

First welcome!

I have not had this happen, but there have been some posts on this forum about this. Maybe, until some one else posts, have a look using the SEARCH function.

They don't slide out, to tight for that. I would think someone has replaced the bearing and not fitted it correctly.

I did not think they could slide out as most wheel bearings need to be pressed in.

After i had cleaned the hub my bearing went into the hub assy with a plastic hammer and not much effort?

I was wondering if a seized caliper on the slide side would allow enough force from the pistopn side of the caliper to force the bearing out?

The reason i say this is when i took the caliper off one pad was like new the other down to the metal
