"Star" tool for seat removal

Featured Replies

Fellows,

I have a hole in my driver seat (booster) this is the way I bought the car long time ago :) however in my local "pick and pull" they have Skoda for braking and I can pick the both front seats for £35.00. Now the only thing between my "new" seats and me is the "Star" key I need to unbolt them from the car. What size is it and who sells them?

I've looked around but I couldn't find one for the life of me.

HELP :)

Any advice, suggestions? Any local member I can borrow the tool for few hours for a small fee?

Thanks

Pretty sure it's a standard security bit - try screwfix / machine mart

WOW, this is what I call a 5* customer service :)

Thanks fellows

I bought a set off ebay cost me 4 quid and I've taken my seats out 4-5 times now, the m10 bit is still in good nick

You need an M10 spline bit. Available on your favourite auction site :)

Or phone a friend ;)

As Sam says, search the bay, they are dirt cheap

Make sure you keep the tool vertical where using it. I found the teeth on one of my seat bolts slightly rounded off, presumably when the leather seats were fitted in 2007. I have a short reach bit - a long reach bit would be preferable to work with the ratchet and clear the seat at the inner front left location.

You should find it easier taking the front bolts out first then the back ones - the runners will then be in a better position to remove the seats through the door aperture.

I've also read somewhere that bolts should be replaced but mine clearly hadn't been in the past - so I didn't.

Loctite might help too though I haven't used it or had to use it.

i would have put money on it being a 8mm one tbh, the driveshaft bolts definitely are... still they aint too expensive for a whole set anyway

They are definitely M10 - I lent my tool to Sam for his Fabia (no tool jokes please) B)

i'm not disputing that brim, its been ages since i've owned a fabia... now i come to think of it, it must be a 10 because i used a vag cylinder head bolt socket to undo mine.

christ knows why they used them daft things anyway, what's wrong with a normal hex bolt eh?

This is a good piece of info.

Thank you, I will pay attention to everything you've mention

These tools are so cheap that you can get a full set for kids pocket money

Try BIG "H"

If in doubt about the bolts, I've heard of people grinding the bulb/round off the ends of bits in order to get a decent grip on bolt head.

I need to remove the electric front driver seat of my Superb 3 in order to diagnose non-function of the electric action. Unfortunately seat is fully forward and the upper, sliding rail is covering the front bolts. Cold chisel to slacken them, then fiddle with pliers? Make a special tool from a short spline bit, with a handle/rod welded to the side of the bit? Any suggestions gratefully received!

Many thanks Fabdavrav. If I can get the front bolts out this could be useful.

I've only glanced briefly at the docs provided by @fabdavrav, but aren't they exactly for the case where you can't get at those normal screws cos of non-working front-to-back motor?

Look at the top of the first photo I posted..title says it all....its for when you cannot move the seat front to back as the motor has failed....you undo different bolts, NOT the ones you photographed...
