Been talking to a couple of evo owners about chipping my slxi, one of the first things they asked me is "does it have traction control?". When I told them "no it doesn't" they kinda coughed and made faces, but they said it all it requires is a switch in the dashboard, and some twiddling of the engine managment, just plugs in and works off the abs was the general consensus, while I hate to doubt these guys (they are all fanatic about their cars, and know the innermost workings of them) it cannot be that simple can it, I do have a blank switch in the dash though.....

Once again I bow down to your superior knowledge of these things, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about the slxi, but the (later) Elegance trim includes ASR (Automatic Stability Regime). This is a combination of ABS and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL - see here for a definition). This is (almost) a traction control system - the only thing missing is the link to the throttle, to back off engine power if both driven wheels are spinning.

It's not that simple, I would not use ABS as a form of ASR, as for one thing if it's a fly by wire throttle then any brake application will kill the throttle dead..

You would be better off finding out if ASR is on your ECU anyway, and can just be turned on?

Would be great if it can just be turned on. The SLX has an AGU engine with cable throttle control, not fly-by-wire, unless they sent out a very few late ones with the fly-by-wire engines.

You do have to get used to feeding in power in a controlled fashion, not just stomping on the pedal. Mine will lose traction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd on a wet road, so "softly, softly" is the approach. Once you get used to it, however, it's not that big a deal. However, if you think about it, that's all the traction control is doing anyway, moderating your coarse inputs and reducing them to a finer control.

If I am understanding you guys properly, ASR doesnt have a button but like ABS is on constantly?

nccarring, I think you have the same engine as me, what kind of power do you get after the remap?

and is it in your face or nice and progressive? Sorry for all the questions but A) have to justify this to SWMBO, and more importantly there is a guy at work with a 3.0ltr V6 laguna who is really taking the P**S, the old favourites such as "TAXI..." shouted across the factory and etc etc..

He drives home the same way as me and makes a point of screaming past me....I hate to sound like a kid being picked on in the playground...but a subtle Jabba job would soon wipe the smile off his chops and permanantly imprint it on mine..!!

On mine (L&K TDi), the ASR button actually turns the system off. A light appears in the dash if you do this.

Other models could be different though. I believe the 4x4 has a completely different system.

The ASR does have a button, but you only need it to turn it off, so if you are never going to turn asr off then you don't need the button as it's active as soon as you start the engine.

Fram - 200 bhp (i.e. a one third increase). Look here for the dyno plot (click on link underneath the pics).

Power - have described it elsewhere (specifically look in "Other reviews/tuners") but basically it's beautifully smooth. Best described as "like standard, but more" or "more of the same". You'll love it!! :p

4x4's don't have ASR.. they have ESP, which will only pull back power as a last resort.

I have a 2000 slx AGU, it comes with ABS and EDL but not ASR.

More than a year with an Upsolute chip and I would say no need of ASR, it would be nicer to have a LSD (Limited Slip Differential ).
