collected my SM

Featured Replies

Trip down to London, overnight and then collected the SM on Saturday morning from Marlborough. Everything went to plan and Kim at the dealer had the car waiting to go. A very good experience with Marlborough and made to feel very welcome, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a car from them again and wouldn't let the distance put me off.

The drive back up was long, about 420 miles, averaging 46.2miles/gallon. I did notice the steering wheel sitting about 2 degrees off centre, at dead centre the car was drifting slightly to the right. Unfortunately by the time I had confimed this to myself I was a fair distance away from the dealer and decided just to continue home. Not sure if I should head to a dealer to sort the alignmentor just take it to a specialist 4 wheel drive allignment centre, is that what the dealer would do anyway?

Hi servicepoint,

glad to hear you have your Monster at last :)

Re the steering have you checked tyre pressures; found when I got home they were still set at a in-transit/storage figure of nearly 3.5 bar :o

Otherwise best go to a dealer with her being so new.

Regards,

TP

Mine were way stupidly high too! I recall a thread on here about 18 months ago where several of us commented that our new toy's tyre pressures were way too high, or high on one side only. The latter would certainly account for a steering pull.

A bit basic I know.... the tyre pressure check is part of the PDI.

If that doesn't solve it, I agree that you should definitely visit a local Skoda dealer for an alignment check before going elsewhere.

I never thought to check that as I figured with the s/wheel not at dead centre it was more to do with alignment.

Ok I'm going to go and check them, what psi should they be at?

On the xenon lights can someone advise, mine don't appear to swivel, went into the maxi-dot and there doesn't appear anything in the lights section to switch it on or off??

Tyre pressure seems ok, 33psi / 2.25 bar.

Check there not in travel mode (lights and vision); locks them in a position for driving abroad.

Just checked and there is a option for deactivating the swivel; maxidot main menu Assistants (not the one in set-up)

Thanks, found that option, not an easy one to find!

TP can you also advise, do I put the lights in Auto position for the directional indicator lights to function? When in Auto the two round lights are on, think its the bottom section. I have searched the forum and read pages and pages about them but never really got an answer as to what setting I require to have them operational.

Can you clarify what you mean by directional indicator lights; corner fogs :wonder: if so there active no matter what below 40kph.

Sorry, I mean the cornering fogs, one side should come on when making a turn.

I spotted this elsewhere, is this the case?

According to my reading of page 57 in the manual, the cornering fog lights do not come on if the daylight driving lights (aka DRLs) are switched on. You can turn the DRLs on and off through the Maxidot.

IMO anyone who mistakes a single foglight illuminating for a number of seconds as a "flash to pull out" is being a tad too eager. They are also failing to observe rule 111 of the Highway Code: Never assume that flashing headlights is a signal inviting you to proceed. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.

Edited by servicepoint

The cornering fogs operate when you have dipped/high beam on (Auto or manual switch position) under the following conditions;

indicate or turn wheel left below 40 kph then left front fog will come on and vis versa for right.

select reverse then both front come on; help see where your swinging the front end.

This system cannot be deactivated or altered by maxidot.

Oh separate thing leave your indicator on with engine off will activate the park lights (one one side; the direction of indication)

Hope that helps,

To clarify:

cornering fog lights only work when the headlights are on, and the DRL's are off.

DRL's go off when you turn the sidelights on.

(My cornering fogs work up to 55kph!)

Ok thanks TP, sorted now.

Just a visit to the dealer to get the tracking sorted now, all the tyre pressures were ok.

Mine has the same 1-2 degree off centre issue since new, March 2011. Will mention to the dealer at first service as well as the rubbing handbrake, although in my experience they do not tend to have the state of the art equipment necessary to adjust the tracking by such a small amount, they are probably more likely to make matters worse as the amount of adjustment required will be minuscule. Clearly though a visit to the dealer is the right thing to do. I look forward to seeing how you get on.

This is exactly my thinking, the dealers don't normally have the equipment for this, I could save myself the hassle of the dealer who may just move the issue onto a specialist or I can go direct and foot the bill but get the issue sorted immediately. There is a very good one within 12 miles of me who can do the 4x4 alignment who I used for my Subaru and X5. The issue is probably at the front as the s/wheel is not dead centre.

Is it just one spline out of alignment on the steering column boss?

If so, that's a simple dealer job. I think I'd get that checked first? No need for geometry alignment then.

Merlinman, I'm not sure, when the wheel is in the centre position the car drifts to the left. Spoke to the supplying dealer today and they thought it may be down to the fitting of the 3 spoke wheel.

The car is completely stable otherwise with the wheel just off centre.

That sounds like a spline out to me?

I'd check that first?

About 15-30 mins to sort if that's all it is

Does that mean they take the s/wheel off and reposition?

Agreed, but it will take a bit longer than 30 minutes to sort it out. You have to leave the air bag for at least that long after disconnecting the battery before you can remove it!

Good luck getting it sorted but once you have enjoy!!!

lang may yer lum reek

I am going on the standard instructions to our Rescue units, because it can take that long for the capacitor to discharge.

All sounds a bit if a nightmare to me, don't really want someone getting in about my s/ wheel with a screwdriver.

I had a steering wheel changed on my last car a VW Golf 170 GT Sport - the VW dealer (not renown for their munificence!) charged 30 mins labour, I think we're talking about different circumstances , Graham?

Hope you get it sorted quickly SP - I appreciate how irritating it is!
