I could use some help with multiple Fabia symptoms and codes!

Just taken recipt of the battery. Odd question: Can it be carried home on its side?

Best to carry a battery upright always. Most may leak battery acid, a few types are fully sealed and this would cause no issue. They will often have a handle on the top that should carry the weight of the battery.

I did it! I have replaced the battery and gave my car a test drive. I've erased all the codes, and now I'll give it a good run in a minute to see if any codes pop back up. My car seems to be running fine.

Couple of questions though, it seems I can no longer close the window by pushing a switch and letting go. I now have to hold the button down. Trying to change the interior lighting level also has no effect. When I turn lights on without the engine engaged, it takes a second for them to come on, when it used to come on immediately previously. Are these things to be worried about?

Edit: I haven't "clamped" the battery back into place yet. I'll do that later. It was a royal pain in the ass to unclip in the first place. Halfords charged me £10 for a socket extension! Unbelievable!

In reagrds to the window.

Sounds like you need to reset the one-touch operation. Think you just close the window all the way manually then it should work?

Not sure about the lights. Check ALL fuses. One may have blown.

Also if you haven't already get the alternator output checked... there is a small chance it is too high (voltage regulator) hence the blown bulbs etc.

I took my car for a full test drive. No diagnostic codes are logged any more - the car appears to be in perfect condition! I managed to get the alternator checked, which is also fine. I offer my thanks for the advice you have all given to me these past few days!

The only remaining problem is the low intensity of the dashboard light. It makes it difficult to see my speed or RPM or even the time. The dimmer has no effect. The light exhibits some rather strange behaviour: If I turn off the ignition, it will light up fully. If I turn on the ignition, it will go very dim again. If I turn off the ignition, and open the boot, the light will go from bright to dim for one second, before going bright again. I don't think this is a problem with the bulb as it is clearly working, and the behaviour is not random and erratic as I can reproduce it every time. Does anyone have a clue what this could be?

Hmmm. Sound like a dodgy earth or a wire short somewhere.

Sounds fairly simialr to a problem my dad was having with his old T reg Sharan recently.

It was exhibiting some strange behaviour in relation to the dashboard lights and other electrics.

If he opened the boot the dash light would come on and they also came on when he turned the ignition on even without the lights switch on they would also light up.

It turned out after he uncovered some of the wiring on the passenger side there was some damaged wires and they were shorting out.
