Wrong fuel

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Not how I wanted my first post to be but I put £40 of petrol in the monte carlo tonight and its not a petrol! Never realised as my main cars have always been petrol. Anyway I managed to drive about 600yards to my house and it started to idle funny. Thats when I realised what I did. The car had 2 bars left so probably about £8-£10 of diesel left.

Now I have googled this and they all recon I could be looking at a £2000+ repair bill as I drove it. What do you think and anyone actually done the same. Its costing £180 tomorrow morning to get RAC to drain it.

Cheers

Martyn

Martyn man !! :( you've killed your engine man :( I did the same but luckily I didn't drive didn't even turn it over, you've started and drove off, feel sick for you man :( putting petrol in the diesel is a bummer, diesel in petrol you'll get away with, it's a new engine I'm afraid :(

Think you may just get away with a clean and filter change 600yards isn't very far and towards the end is where it started to mix so maybe you're safe.

Well thats really cheered him up emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Petrol lighter than diesel will have changed places with the derv then straight into the pump and straight down the fuel pipes hopefully you'll be lucky, but remember stick 4 letters on the flap"DERV" on it ;)

Well I did the same in my wifes 1.5 diesel Nissan Note a couple of years ago. I drove about 6 miles before it conked out and I realised what I had done. AA chap turned up, and drained it, put a gallon of diesel back in and fired up no problems. 30k later it was still absolutely fine. Like you, I'd heard all sorts of scare stories about £2k bills e.t.c and was really worried. AA chap said most of the time its OK but Audis especially tended to be more susceptable. whether that applies to the whole VW group I'm not sure. Anyway don't panic yet you may be OK. Good luck.

;) chances are it be fine ;)

As soon as it started to misfire I realised and turned it off. Fingers crossed a drain and filter will be ok. I read lots of stories but not from anyone who had actually wrecked engine so fingers crossed as I don't have a spare £2000+ to fix my wifes 6 month old car :(

Looks like she'll have my car and i'll be walking

I hope it'll be ok for you, let the RAC work their magic! Check your insurance policy as you may be covered for misfueling too!

It'll be grand.

Not checked yet but a quick look seems to show Admiral being one of the "we dont cover that" ones. Typical :(

I used to work for them in their claims department up until the end of 2010 and I used to register mis fueling claims quite often =/

That a bit of better news :)

Not 100% sure if they were accepted but I seem to recall asking a manager who said it was covered, their policy booklet doesn't exclude it under any 'What is not covered' section which is quite extension mentioning things like tyres etc... What's the worst that can happen, they say no?

Online says this too

"Another option is to make a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If there is no specific mention of this in your insurance policy; in this case, it may be considered as an exclusion that was not notified to you when you signed the contract for your insurance policy. The Financial Ombudsman Service has stated that it would expect an insurer to meet a claim against misfuelling, if there was no clear exception to this in the insurance policy."

id phone a garage and ask first but youd think, drain it, change the filters and put some new fuel in and it might just work

as petrol is lighter then diesel and im assuming the pickup pipe will be nearer the bottom of the tank wont it mean more diesel will have gone through and the 600 yards wont have agitated the tank that much

got to be worth a shot

deisel in petrol is the bad thing!

beleive me, you can drain it and run it fine... anyone who tells you otherwise is ripping you off....

edit: also , if it is bad, try your insurance company ;)

Chances are you can get away with a tank drain & refill (of diesel ;)), new fuel filter, and drain down the fuel pipes too. Crank the head over a bit with the injector loom disconnected so the engine turns and fuel gets cycled through, but doesn't actually start.

Oh, and don't fill with petrol again. ;) That distinctive smell of the petrol pump should immediately set alarm bells ringing. Does with me. I put petrol into a Rav4 at the weekend (a petrol one :D) and I had to be real sure when I took that green pump! it IS a petrol car, IT IS A PETROL CAR! :D

Wrong. Ignore. :dull:

As said (by someone who knows what they are talking about) it's not a huge problem.

Get as much fuel out of the system as possible, change the filter, fill it up with fresh diesel.

It will be fine as said a good drain new filters and a brim of diesel she be good as new.

Sorry gave wrong info :( its the other way round ;)

Not sure about this Seboni121 kid, seems to be the one with the bad advice, all doom and gloom.

after his comment about refusing to mount a curb for an ambulance in case he scratches his alloys he hardly has much sense or credibility.

but holding his hands up and admitting the mistake it the first part of redemption ;-)

Not always the Case Jason

My Local BP Station used Black Hoses/nossle for Super Unleaded. I complained that I almost put Super Unleaded in my Motor and the reply was

"....yep, Lots of people do that " the Hose/nossle shouldn't be black.

?? The AA said to me " lucky you didn't drive it" when I put petrol in the diesel, even the mechanic who emptied the fuel tank said" don't turn the ignition as the fuel pump will mix the fuel and start filling up the fuel system primed and ready to go ", so there is inherent danger of engine damage, as for mounting the curb for an ambulance ? May have reversed the vehicle to a spot were both vehicles had less chance of damage, however strangely enough the ambulance did put its light out at the end of the road!!, redemption who needs it ? I certainly don't I'm going to burn in hell apparently ;)
