When to change tyres?

Featured Replies

Well I've got 1k a month for maintenance and I'm already planning to buy an extended warranty.

Looking at users reviews it will be pricey but not 1k a month pricey. I notice discs and pads are pretty expensive and so are tyres.

I have looked more closely at the RS4 and C63 pricing and a set of tyres will be around £800-£1000. Discs and pads seem to be a around the same, some people have said more!

It may turn out my tyres are ok, I will let you guys know later. Grip feels ok to me though. On closer inspection it's just the outsides that look a bit worn.

My brother gets less than 8000 miles out of C63 back tyres so be warned!

His is leased with full maintenance and tyres so merc just change them when they've worn.

He pays £40 a month extra for this so might be worth looking into.

Hi mate, if it's just the outside edges chances are either your tyre pressure or alignment is out. Fixing either should hopefully get you a few more miles out of the tyres depending upon how worn they are.

If you do change the tyres get the best you can afford, especially with the power you are running. Better to have an unmodded car with good tyres than a modded car with rubbish ones.

Trouble is whilst I can afford one I can't afford brand new one. Looking at around the 30k mark to be honest. Don't know if I can get one with service plan if not brand new.

Skoda wanted £45 a month for service, maint and tyres. That's on 12k per year.

It could be the alignment as the steering wheel feels slightly off centre when I'm driving straight. Il check pressures but I'm usually on top of this so should be ok. When I do get tyres I'm going for Goodyear f1's based on reviews on this forum.

I figured a forum such as this was for this kind of info

It is!!

I would rather someone ask than make a poor decision or even worse ignore it. Ask away!!!!

I would imagine many of those calling for them to be a legal requirement do not have them fitted themselves.

Can't get my head round that one.

I have asked and had some good comments and I am going to check a few things based on a lot of good advice. Think I just a bit miffed at a comment made.

Also bear in mind fuel costs, you put you're right foot down and your looking at less than 10MPG!!

And you will put your foot down trust me!

The noise is sooooo addictive!

You are making me want it now! Must be patient and not jump in just yet. First the tyres!

Probably not advisable to stir up jealousy unless you can take the adverse comments. Especially in these straitened economic times. I recently drove an M3 at a track day- will be a once in a life time experience for me.

3mm or less is the point when 80% of wet grip is lost . Try some mid range tyres if money is tight at present. I've recently bought some Barums (made by Continental) at ~£90 each rather than the £140 for Michelin.

But I've ony got 140ps to contend with.

The C63 is likely to be a tyre smoking experience- so budget plenty for replacements.

Wasn't trying to create jealousy so if I have my apologies to people.

I wouldn't risk part worns, there have been some unpleasant experiences on here of people ending up with tyres from written off cars.

Not knowing how they have been treated or how many curbs they been up makes them not worth the risk for me.

I'd take a pair of brand new budgets over part worn premiums.

Hi All

I agree with this - you don't know if they have hit potholes at motorway speeds or been up and down kerbs. I have used part worn tyres in the past but for a small slow car when I was a student. I wouldn't risk it for anything with a bit of power.

You can get Falken 452's for £74.50 from Camskill at the moment - you will need to get them fitted somewhere though - maybe £15 a wheel.

I have a full set of the 452's on my astravan and have had no problems with them. There is also 2 on the rear of the wife's VRS ad they have been fine. I suppose it depends if you want to drive to the max all the time but for normal driving and a wee kick of its ar5e now and again the Falkens are good. They are pretty quiet also.

Here's a link for the Falkens - you can check out the prices of the other tyres for comparison.

What I mean that those saying it should be a legal requirement will not fit them 'till it is. Ie they cannot do it off their own back.

Makes sense to me sorry if you do not understand.

Fronts about 3.5mm and rears around 6mm. Based on people's thoughts I should be changing fronts pretty soon. I think 1 month and I will.

I put two new tyres on the front of my one 2 weeks ago.

I knew it was time when I was losing traction on take off while pulling onto a main road and needed to get away in a bit of a hurry.

Also when in rain putting the foot down lost traction as well.

I had the original Bridgstone Potenza 050 on it..

I replaced these with 2 Hankook >> These Ventus Prime 2

Finding it hard to break traction now even when taking off in the wet.

Reasonable as well emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I think the general consensus is that those who have fitted winter tyres (me included) find the improvements very beneficial, and would be quite happy to have legislation require them. The other camp of doubters would probably rather leave it the way it is, never mind legislate for them!

maybe we mean the same thing but looking at it differently?

sorry to but in half way through but im guessing your on about changing the law to make people put winter tyres on

i put my winters on yesterday, i know better late then never! but i do agree, the benefits become apparent after only a few miles.

we had some extreme rain yesterday and the comparison to having my all season tyres on to putting on the winters, the grip from the winter tyres in deep standing water and general wetness was epic

Thats one thing I'll need to do when I pick up my new car next week is get winter tyres, not a legal requirement here in Belgium but they are in Germany where we go quite a bit. Prices are a bit different between the two countries as well. In Germany for CONTINENTAL WINTER CONTACT TS830 with Alloys is 126 euro a corner but in Belgium youre talking another 20 euro ontop for just the rubber (195 65 15).

It's frightening to think of you buying one of these high powered cars but not having the knowledge of when to change your current car's tyres.

I'll leap to the defence of the Op here! Most people on the road change their tyres when the garage of MOT failure tells them to. Briskoda drivers are enthusiasts and hardly representative of the general motoring public.

I'd say most people change their tyres when legally obliged to and its perfectly reasonable for the OP to ask for advice on this.

But...Nicky Boy what's your insurance going to be on a C63? and £1000/month for maintenance?

What's your total monthly outgoings on this car going to be? In excess of £2000? £3000? That's a lot of dosh unless you are doing very very well and have nothing slightly more boring but forward looking to put your money into (pension, property etc)

Why not swap front to rear for a bit?

Thanks for the defence, this is what I was expecting from briskoda.

I already have a property and a pretty good pension and when I get to 30 I plan to invest more in property but for now it's going to be sort of wasted on a car.

I have UP TO £1000 a month for the car. Insurance I normally pay in 1 go to avoid interest and it if I got it now it would be 2k next year will be around £1700. Painful yes but it's only temporary (I hope)!

Yes I might, will my single jack be enough to do this or will I need two? You can see my inexperience here!

I would take it to garage - they will do it in 5 minutes and torque the wheel bolts up correctly and probably only charge a tenner at the most. Not worth the hassle of messing about in the cold with a scissor jack.

Why not swap front to rear for a bit?

iv only just been told this but always put best tred to the rear of the car so leave it as it is
