The Dangers of Winter Driving

Featured Replies

Can you put the post back where it was started, as by moving it you have killed the thread.

No sorry it's got nothing to do with fabia 2's bar the fact that you were in one.

Nothing personal.

Appreciated...

If you are keeping your car for three or more years then I can't see any reason not to buy and fit winter tyres, they will offset the wear on your summer tyres because during the months winters are fitted your summers are in storage. Often smaller winter tyres are cheaper than expensive low profile summer tyres so fitting winter tyres can save you money as well as making your winter driving far safer.

That's ok saying there cheaper than low profile tyres but if you have bog standard tyres they are way more expensive and police cars seem to manage in snow and ice on summer tyres with a very low collision rate when you take into account the amount of miles they do.

Don't know where you are, but around here a few Police cars are fitted with winter tyres, or else they call us (the bit in red below) out to transport them around on non-emergency call.

(There is only one God's Country, and that is to the west of Offas Dyke!!)

Reading the comments about the electronic toys and 4x4, at the end of the day it doesn't matter how many toys you have 4 times zero is still zero.

Add all the toys you like, but if you don't have any friction/grip then you're still going to end up in a mess.

It all comes down to driving to the conditions.

Sometimes it means lifting off gently and very early and letting the car slow itself for a corner rather than trying to rely on the brakes.

I'll be the first to admit the idiots that drive right up your chuff and flash you like a nutter when you do this don't help. I do however figure that if they are in front of me, then they can go have their accident hopefully away from me.

Switching the TCS off can provide extra power to get out of a parking spot in snow for example.

The EDL (or similar) will still operate and help to transfer power to both drive wheels and gain more traction.

Gods country is Cumbria! :)

We've never had them fitted to our patrol cars, we have 50/50 split of patrol cars and 4x4's ranging from new shoguns, older shogun sports, freelanders and land cruiser. None have winter tyres but they do have all terrain tyres?

In your dreams, sunshine. In your dreams!!

The ARV's and traffic cars certainly had winters last year, but everyone else had to cope, or not!

You must have a decent force!

Indeed, everyone knows it's Yorkshire ;)

Nope not really, I fit quality premium brands so.... Prices from mytyres.

My Passat standard summer tyres are £580 for a set standard fit Conti Sports, Winter Pirelli Sottozero's current price £388

Fabia 1.2HTP, standard fit summer tyres are £228 for a set of Conti Premiums, winter Bridgestone Blizzak current price £198.

One is a standard family saloon the other a budget supermini so hardly massively wheeled sports cars.

I bought my winter tyres early so they were not at the inflated prices they are at currently so the gap was much wider.

Factor in your alloys can sit out the winter salt and corrosion in the garage as well as the fact you are wearing cheaper tyres then it's nearly worth it without the big safety benefit.

I do 20k miles a year in the Passat so running winter tyres saves a fair bit as well as giving a much safer winter drive.

The Fabia only does 4k miles a year but as I experienced the massive difference winter tyres made last year I bought some for my wife for this year.

Well I also fit premium brands, I have p7's on at the minute and to buy a set of steels and tyers from my tyres are quite a bit more expensive.

Year 1 will include the wheel cost but also remember for added snow traction go for as small a diameter and width as is certified for your car. That will slash costs too.

eg Passat Summers 235mm on 17" rims, Winters 205mm on 16's. Fabia HTP Summers 195 on 15's, winters 165 on 14's.

Also next year buy in July/August not November/December. I paid £320 for the Fabia package but now the same package is over £400.

Last year I got stung with the Passat package buying in winter, if i'd bought back end of summer I'd have saved over £150.

Traction/Friction/Grip all down to tyres/tyres/tyres whatever the vehicle.

I've owned Land Rovers and Jeeps in the past and my work vehicle is a 110 Defender. What most SUV drivers forget is they may have better traction even on summer tyres to keep going but when they want to change direction or stop they have the same traction as everybody else but usually they have more weight and momentum.

Goto the higher french resorts and you wont see many 4X4's but plenty of light weight small FWD cars wearing narrow studded tyres.

When you need ground clearance then a proper 4X4 with the correct tyres is king but an X5 with 305mm wide tyres on 19" rims? Give it plenty of room on snow.

That would be exactly what I said then, no?

2x nothing or 4 x nothing is still nothing

Yep, I was agreeing with you.
