The Ring, The Ring Sept 2003

Featured Replies

My wife and I are thinking of doing the 'Ring in September - anyone else interested?

It might be nice to travel in a group of like minded RS's (pronounced 'are esses')

No dates yet just looking for interest.

cheers Chris

Chris,

There is a very large party going over for the 12th-15th.

Naturally, I'll be there. Manny may well be there as well.

I'd say there were probably about 30 cars going

Quite a few Scoobs

A few Evos

Quite a few of the RS owners club

A couple of Octavias and Seats.

Book your rooms now to avoid disappointment :D

I booked mine about a month ago :D

Jon

Still thinking about september at the mo, going next month though.

Really? Now thats a coincidence ;)

15th wasn't it?

Did you find a nearby room or are we doing a merry jaunt to Cologne?

Colin, fancy coming over mid-August for a quiet weekend?

Don't tell anyone I'm going this month though! :D

Still no luck nearby, looks like cologne right now. Oh yes the 15th is my 36th birthday, still in 2 minds whether to go to the ring first or straight to cologne.

I'm going to the hotel to drop my stuff off, then to the Ring for the afternoon session.

Jon

Jon, whwre are you booked in??

What day are you all travelling, is it the 12th? what times or does that not matter?

I'm emailing all the hotels and BBs I can find.

Chris

Chris, the above refers to August.

We're all going over on the 12th Sept some by tunnel some by ferry. I'm on the 7am tunnel. We are then convoying down through France and Belgium to get there early-mid afternoon.

We are mainly booked in to guest houses round Nurburg. Try the Zurberg, they may still rooms available. Failing that try the Joong Struf (or something like that ).

You will have a PM in a minute :D

Jon, sent you a PM - please call ASAP cheers Chris

Searching for a "bargin" ferry/train ticket, what sort of time should I aim to be in France for if travelling in that "convoy"?

count me in.. booking time off as we speak... any hotel recomendations...

Here's a thought, anybody who wants a passenger ride/a few goes perhaps?

Pay a bit to fuel and cover insurance...or just ride and smile...oh god I'm going to regret typing that.

Colin you don't know how tempting that is .....

Can someone please clarify for me in words of one syllable what dates you are discussing here - I'm still unclear whether you mean Aug or Sept. Thanks.

Could stretch to "did you see the look on that guys face as we went through customs..."

I could pack my interesting things about nature head. But I know exactly where you are coming from. Yet to confirm or run it past SWMBO, but I'm beginning to think about a bigger picture here and a holiday in that region...anybody got any good touristy site links?

Although that negates the "booze" cruise packing mentality.

we are definately treating it as a hol break with the Ring throWn in, IYKWIM?

  • Author

Well, we've booked B&B and the ferry - Eurotunnel 0700 out on 12th - and 1730 back on 15th Sept.

Any other good tips for the event such as, tyres - are road legal slicks allowed on Ring? Special additions to insurance? anything else we should know?

cheers Chris

Run what tyres you like, provided they are E marked (yes, things like P Zero Corsas, Kumho Ecsta V700, Dunlop Supersport 9000, Michelin Pilot Cup are OK)

Insurance, you should be covered by a normal green card as the Ring is actually a "one way public toll road" and as such is covered by German traffic laws (ie overtake on the left)

Your fuel consumption will be somewhere between 6 and 15 mpg, absolute max of 20mpg :D

Fuel is marginally cheaper than here

Bet on about 15-20 Euros per evening to cover food and drink

B&Bs are between 20-60 per night per room

Buy 12 lap ticket as it can be used over multiple days

Breakeven for a year ticket is about 65-70 laps (can't remember which). After August you can buy a 6 month one for 1/2 the price of a 12 month one. You would breakeven in a weekend (although I did over 100 my first w/e this year  )

I normally do 20-30 laps per day (which is why I bought a year ticket)

If the track opens at 8, get there at 0755. You'll have the track pretty much to yourself for the first hour or so

Don't try and go fast straight away, in all likelyhood you will crash. Learn the lines and build up slowly. after about 5-10 laps you'll know pretty much where the track goes.

Watch out for bikes.

Have fairly new pads on when you go, especially if its your first time.

Video recording of laps is supposedly not allowed anymore. Bullet cams in front bumper aren't easily spotted ;)

Helmets are advisable although not compulsory

Jon,

We'll try to hook up with the convoy of the morning of the 12th. I'll PM you re mobile tel numbers etc - so we can meet either at Folkestone or Calais.

As stated we're on the 0700 to Calais.

Catch ya later.

Chris

The whole track is available for a couple of driving sims (GPL, F12002 and N2003 I think) so you could get some pre-visit reconnaisance in on the cheap :)

Wish I could go, but then I know my enthusiasm level is greater than my skill level so I think it's probably for the best that I can't afford it...

Regards,

Mark

Jon - any news? Are we meeting up somewhere on the morning please? I haven't got a clue how to get the Nurburg.

Can you pm me your mobile number?

How many folks are going out on this trip?

me possibly, still thinking about it. I was only there a few weeks ago, and what with another holiday in between. need to check funds.

Chris, there are lots of people going to this.

So far there are 3 definite from here; you, Ffelan and me. Manny is possibly going.

There are lots from Scoobynet going, the RS owners are also making a trip along with some of the Evo owners. Mixed in with this little lot are sundry others in M3s, M5s, Elises, caterfields, radicals etc.

Should be good fun.
