Frozen door seals - your solution?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Last night I had the excellent look of crawling across my car to the driver seat when 3 of the 4 door seals were frozen solid.

What would guys recommend as a solution?

I was thinking along the lines of:

Vaseline

Silicone spray

Gummi Pflege

WD40

Will any of these do the job? Will any damage the door seals?

Many thanks all.

Vaseline.

Vaseline worked well on my old Polo. Haven't experienced it with the Fabia though.

Vaseline works fine, as does Gummi pflege

Thanks for the responses.

I've read that Vaseline can attack the door seals and damage them - any truth in this?

Valet Pro Protectant, it conditions the rubber as well so means it'll keep a better seal for longer

Over time yes, it will attack the rubber. AG vinyl and rubber care works well.

Vaseline is a petroleum jelly, so yes this will attack rubber. It is much better to use a silicone based product like GummiPlege. (other silicone greases are available)

just push the door in ;) you'll hear a small click when it breaks the seal

I have a room where my garage used to be...

I have just ordered some Gummi Pflege from eBay having read this thread. A quick search using Google convinced me not to use Vaseline on rubber door seals.

I have some Halfords Rubber and Nylon Lubricant (aerosol) -specifically for this sort of stuff but works brilliantly as a lube for plastics and general DIY, worked wonders on my garage door, which made a hideous shrieking noise -1 application and 5 years on and still smooth as butter.

We have some rubber spray stuff at work that we use to spray on door seals, comes in same cans as all our clear and ptfe grease

We mainly use it to cure squeeks on folding roofs but it is a silicon based stuff for rubber

Sorry to change the subject but thats a very tidy garage, wish mine looked like that

Autoglym Vinyl and rubber care!.. B)

Maplin silicon grease in a tube.

Works a treat and doesn't eat the seals :)

Put a little on a cloth and rub it into the seal.

You can also use the spray, but it's a bit harder to not get the car, so you end up spraying onto a cloth and then rubbing that onto the seals.

Vaseline.

Or glycerine from the chemist. Have heard of Scandinavians using it to keep seals and wipers etc less than frozen solid.
