MY Superb has developed its first fault (other than the ad hoc system starting on the Media System issue that is well known!!!)

The issue is that if I NOW go downhill with foot off accelerator the engine / DSG gearbox automatically downshifts to a lower gear so that the engine ends up racing. It does not matter how steep or unsteep the hill. Usually I end up overriding the downshift by using the paddles so that the car moves from D3 to just 3 and then 4 etc.

This morning was the worst occassion so far left the M25 per normal at J9 a short downhill slip road leading to a rounadabout. Get to the bottom of the slip road and engine had up****ed to 2nd (or poss 3rd) gear and engine doing at least 3'000 revs from recollection pointer was at about 1 o'clock (soory not with car now and cannot recall exactly where the rev numbers are.

Has anyone expereinced the same - odd that this is getting worse. Simon

Mine downshifts on downhill sections which I think is excellent. It does go quite high in the rev range but engine breaking is far better than braking on downhill sections. I live in some very steep valleys and find it very useful. Seems odd that it would happen on a motorway though unless you let your speed go down to 40 or so. 3000 rpm seems low. Mine has been at over 4000 downhill when shifting itself.

Hope it sorts itself out. Might be worth a few tests to see if it is consistent.

I don't recall this having happened to me (58-plate 170CR Elegance). If I brake when going downhill, the DSG changes down to assist, but I can't recall it doing so on its own, simply because of travelling downhill. When slowing down naturally it changes down, but that's related to road speed, not inclines.

Mine does it on occasions, normally either when braking or taking foot off the throttle

I tend now to just slip it across to manual, don't see it as a great problem

Mine did it today going down a steep hill, without the brakes being touched. I was pleasantly surprised as I was about to change down with the paddles for some engine braking.

Yep perfectly normal....I believe that the box has angle sensors in it so if you are going down hill with no gas and the car starts to speed up on its own then the gearbox will kick down to prevent overspeed....as you would in a manual to avoid braking.

Similarly up hill it will keep it in a gear longer to prevent engine labouring.

Noticed while driving in hilly country that the downchanges going downhill are earlier and more likely to happen in S rather than D, which makes sense. Same thing when slowing/braking when coming to a roundabout.

My DSG in the Yeti does the exact same. It is perfectly normal. The older first gen DSG boxes did not do this at all, so it is a feature of the newer ones as far as I know. If you don't like it do as stated above and just move the lever to the left into manual mode. BUT even then the DSG will downshift at some point as you come to a stop albeit less vocally.

My Superb TDi DSG6 does this beautifully. Assists cruise control driving like no other car I've driven. My brake pads are 20% worn @ 45000km. This feature properly used is doubling the life of brake pads and rotors.

Noticed mine changing down from 6th to 5th yesterday to keep the speed down to the cruise control setting on a long downhill stretch. That's impressive, especially as I hadn't noticed the increase in revs or the gearchange and only knew about it from the MFD.
