Vrs might have to go due to high running costs!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I've not been on here for a while but sadly due to running cost and general living cost also going up my Vrs days are nearing to an end! :'( My boss has also told staff that we will not be getting extra pay for doing overtime shifts like normal but instead earn less overtime! I've also noticed due to the increase of fuel prices over the last year my annual fuel bill is 2.4k alone!!!! :o I simply can't aford to run it much longer! It's a real shame as I really like the car and I've only had it for one year! but in this difficult financial time I need to get something smaller but still fun. I could fully exchange my Vrs for a Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart without paying any extra for it! I know this is a 1.5 litre turbo car and not to everyones taste but compare the annual running cost, i'd be saving about 1.5k a year. I never thought i'd need to sell my car so soon.

Feel for you on this, times r tuff.

What about a Fabia VRS?

Thanks mate, like I said on my topic times are very tuff at the moment and they're not going to get better anytime soon either. My wife has also had to take redundancy! My overal cost for my Vrs yearly is about 4.5k!!!! :o The Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart I saw is an 09 plate with only 13k miles! and i'm able to do a direct swap for one. Fabia VRS, yes Fabia is also a nice choice as they are diesel. I did look for one but most were quite old and high miles or too far from me to look at.

Monte Carlo Fabia...

or my Octy VRS TDi with only 40k miles and priced just above trade in the for sale section :) Average 45mpg ...on a run up to 55-56mpg

Yep monte carlo fabia if you want to stay Skoda, was looking at one a few weeks back,1.2ltr turbo. £95.00 a year tax.Nice car and would of gone for it but then changed my mind and kept the vrs.

or the 105 ps 1.6 TDi, £20 Tax average 55mpg model. My mum just got one, its verrryyy nice.

I switched from diesel to my TFSI VRS about 11 weeks ago and I estimate that I have spent an extra £6 ish on fuel over that 10 week period. Of course the road tax has doubles but apart from that not a discernible increase in cost. My commute is short and in traffic so my consumption suffered as it was but with petrol cheaper than diesel it was a no brainer

That very interesting reading, only £6 difference in fuel, incredible.

Plus the extra saving that the diesel is approximately 1k to 1.5k more expensive to purchase

I must stress that the figure I came out to is entirely based on my mpg, tank capacity and the price difference between petrol and diesel (138.9 for diesel vs 134.9 for Momentum, 95 RON is cheaper still). If I assumed 44mpg out of the diesel and 3mpg out of the VRS on a more economy friendly commute, the difference is definitely in favour of the diesel, but over the same mileage the cost saving in fuel worked out to about £14 in favour of the diesel.

As you say shortie, the £1-1.5k difference doesn't seem to make it worth it. My mrs Golf does 53mpg up and down the motorways, at a far less gentle pace than my VRS - admittedly there is no contest cost wise!!

I sympathise. But do your maths carefully, it can often be cheaper to stick with what you've got.

My VRS will be due disks and pads all round soon. I'm dreading that bill, still paying off the cambelt service :(

I've being trying to do the maths on the mpg of my Vrs compared to the Suzuki Swift Sport and Mitsubishi Colt ralliart. :nerd: The Colt will return in town driving about 33mpg and the Swift about 35mpg. Colt has 150bhp Swift 124bhp and both have a 45 litre fuel tank. I've tried to work out the numbers by myself but I ended up using the web to work it out for me! It was a bit confusing to work it out on paper!

The website claims my yearly expendature for Vrs = £4224! When I put in the Swift details it claims i'd save £1000 a year! and the Colt £800 a year :nerd! Do these calculations sound right? :wonder:

You might think you're saving however much money per year, but still think about MPG - an Octavia TDI VRS will return better economy than both the Colt and the Swift (though the Swift Sport is a very nice little car). Also think about the dealers, aftercare etc... keep looking for a Fabia vRS in your budget too! :)

Have you driven the Colt yet ? , they are a nice car but have a MASSIVE blind spot on the front pillars, SWMBO has a Colt blue which is nice but all Colts depreciate like mad

If you want to cost save then look at Colt 95hp Diesels which you can pickup for peanuts , then remap to 130hp , a cheap to buy and run car .

Why have you used the web to work out how much it costs to run your car surly you can work it out better yourself.

Forget MPG figures.

You are the only one who knows how much fuel you put in each week.

You know how much your insurance and tax costs each year.

Easy enough to work out.

So the £4224 may break down like this. ( This example does not include depreciation )

So lets say that your tax mot and insurance comes to £1200.

Service costs approx £500 a year.

That means you are putting around £50 a week in the tank.

Does this sound right to you.

Try this site to work out you running costs. My link

This works it out as cost in pence per mile inc deprication.

Click on tools the car running costs select you mileage/months and then select the car.

My fabia vRS has saved me £20 per tank of fuel becaude it gets yhe same miles per tank as my old octabia despite having 15litre smaller fuel tank. Insuranceis £200 a year cheaper and tax is half the price

So in the year with 15k mileage I'm saving around £1100 a year

What mpg are you getting from your vrs? By the time you've factored in what you'll lose on your car when you swap it,you might not be any better off.

That sounds about right mate, however i'm now going to test drive a Fabia Vrs 1.9 TDI next friday! It's looking very likely that i'll change my Octavia Vrs (petrol) for the Fabia. I have done a lot more research regarding running cost and it turns out that the Fabia would save me 1k on fuel a year and road tax about £120 per year! The insurance is also a lot cheaper, my Vrs is group 15 and the Fabia is group 10! Overal my annual savings should be about 1.5k!!! Fabia Vrs here i come! :)

I've only had my VRS a year, and I must admit I'm beginning to wonder what the point is. 80-90% of the time I'm in traffic or stuck behind "40mph-everywhere" (including through 30s) people. Most of the rest of the time it's unsafe to exploit the VRS any more than a more modest car. *ALL* of the time, the performance I cannot use kills the MPG and costs me extra in insurance and tax. Is there much point in having a car with more than about 150bhp in south east England? Planning a road-trip to the Scottish Highlands later this year, so perhaps I'll see the point then!
