MOT

a friend had his French heap tested the other day and was shown the additional checks on a list but he passed with a botched exhaust held on with a jubilee clip :wonder: and a few other lil faults..... Sounds to me more like the test is coming more into line with Northern Ireland's existing test standards (but they have added some new bits in NI too) but a lot still too much left to the discretion of your best mate in local garage for that reason I wouldn't give a MOT certificate issued in GB any value as to the condition or safety of a vehicle even if it had been done the same day :p

I was once told by an officer of the law that a MOT certificate is only good whilst its at the tester as soon as the vehicle leaves the testers it means nothing towards the car being road worthy.

As for "mates" MOT I've seen and owned some shocking passes and yet the same MOT station has failed new cars for no real reason. Wont go into details of the tester in question but they failed my fabia on its first MOT sat nav mark on screen, number plate not correctly space (was UK font and has passed everytime since) and front discs (only been on for 10k miles and stayed on passing 2 more MOT's and services until the car hit 90K (some 40K later) yet 3 days before they passed my **** box Rover 220 coupe that didn't even drive straight!!

So changing the rules will not make that much difference unless they garages wants the extra money.

Way around it would be to pull out the warning light so it does not light up etc.

Apparently there is even doubt about whether the removal of a standard pre-cat would cause a failure even if the main cat had been replaced with a sports cat. I would hope not but I guess it depends on whether a pre-cat counts as a cat for the purposes of the MOT Regs.

SWMBO had her Fiesta MOT'd yesterday so I had a long chat with tester [ been using the garage for over 20 years so know them well ] and he is not too happy with new test.

A lot of the visuals seem to be open to interpretation e.g. changes to makers original build specification etc. CAT and DPF removal will obviously be easily seen plus the poor emmission check results so will these fail the vehicle? Modified exhaust systems, suspension and non OEM wheels, spacers and tyre size - are they likely to see a MOT fail as are changes to lighting such as non OEM LED bulbs or after market Xenon conversions?

The 'New' MOT cert is also poor quality, just a landscape format A4 sized white sheet printed by the test station, it even says on it to check validity on www.direct.govuk/yourmotcheck. I personally would not trust it if buying a car as it appears to be so easy to forge or reprint with the recorded advisories removed as all the advisories are now printed on the MOT cert so if selling a car the new buyer can see all the 'non-fail' faults recorded by tester!

Are there any MOT testers on the Forums who can give us all a more detailed and constructive overview?

I had my last car tested recently. It didn't pass the emissions test as it hadn't got warm on its way to the test centre but they passed it anyway, and the paperwork I got, as you say, could easily be forged but that would be pointless as it's only a receipt and doesn't mean anything other than the car's been tested. The official details of the car's pass/advisories are held on the VOSA website and that won't give its details away easily I suspect.

My mate just had his Jeep tested and I actually though it was the receipt for the work carried out! Have to agree I wasn't impressed with it.
