New modem/router recommendations

Featured Replies

We have had a landline in now for a few months and we got a plusnet telephone/internet package,

I had a old belkin wireless modem/router spare from my parents house so were running that at moment but it keeps dropping connection all time and its starting to get really annoying now, i thought it was just laptop at fault but since getting new one its still doing same thing,

It used to do same thing at my parents house but i always put it down to really slow connection with them been out in sticks and plus the dlink one we had previous always used to do it aswell, but its just as bad with a fast'ish internet connection aswell,

What do people recommend as i don't want to spend another 80 odd quid to have exactly same issue

Netgear basic home routers will do the job nicely. They are a little more tenacious when it comes to keeping hold of signal.

Model such as..

DG834-V4

Or for a few pounds more,

Flavour of the month is the Cisco Linksys E4200 .

Draytek can do no wrong for me but come at a premium

model 2820 (ok a bit of overkill from a features point of view but built to last).

Useful site.

I have had major grief with both Dlink and Belkin modem/routers. I have always had good results with Netgear stuff. It depends on what you will be using it for and how big your house is -if you're just wanting it for basic internet surfing in a small to medium sized house, then I'd get a NetGear DG834G off eBay -I've had one for years, less features = less to go wrong.

The only real way to test is to firstly disable any extensions by removing the master socket faceplate and then attach the modem to the socket inside.

You could also try selecting a different wireless channel.

get hold of a filtered faceplate or a BT branded microfilter and that can cure a lot of disconnect problems and increase sync speed. Check if your phone socket instalation has a ring wire (google will help)

as for routers Cisco/Linksys, Zyxel, Netgear, T-Link, Belkin. get the best you can off ebay. if you want lots of features consider a WRT54GL with wrt-dd firmware.

Also better to have seperate devices for ADSL and Wifi instead of a wireless router modem.

Good call on changing the channel, what's actually dropping -is it the WiFi connection or the internet connection?

I've always used netgear but recently moved to sky and they insist younuse their modem so I'm now on a sagem. I do have a one year old dg834 here if you need one. Pm me a drink we can sort something out. :-)

Recently installed a TP-Link WR1043ND wireless router, cost just over £40.

Very pleased with the features (includes a USB port to network share) and the range, much better than my previous Linksys. Had a bit of trouble with the wireless but cured it by swapping channels.

Used a little bit of software called inSSIDer to monitor the local wireless channels.

If your line connection is ADSL2(+) it is likely that your old router is an ordinary ADSL one which can cause the dropped (line)connections you mention.

Have no specific router recommendation but suggest you make sure your selection is listed as an ADSL2+ modem/router

If you want something with a good reputation & with some future proofing built in then try DrayTek Vigor 2850n

I use Sky LLU, and I am using my own router. Either a Draytek Vigor 2820 or a Vigor 120 (pure ADSL modem). Draytek stuff isn't cheap, but it works well and provides a lot of functionality I find useful (multiple SSIDs, VLANs, VPN termination, site to site VPN, etc)

The first Sagem F@st router they supplied me had useless wifi and dodgy internals adn it was reporting the SNR miles off the mark and ruined my DLM.

Bought one just before Xmas and it is probably the best yet (for me) but if you want to invest in one (currently at £140.00) it's worth waiting a bit as V2 has just come out which has even better wi-fi capability.

Belkin's can be a real pain if you need to use VPN

Net gear range masters dual band wireless n router modem, emoticon-0105-wink.gif Fantastic especially with orange

Oh well. They gave me a sagem wireless n router it worked first time so I just used that and out the netgear on the shelf. I think sky's line is if you use your own router we can't help you with any problems you might have.

Try 6-11 for wi- fi, you may be getting interference from another device I.e wireless phone or similar

Start with the basics!

Some of the older routers have interesting capacitors that can die and also power supplies that seem unable to power the router and wireless when they get old. Net result is that they keep shutting down the wireless ever so often.

Try another PSU if you have one that's the same spec.

I changed channel from 5 to 8 and it was hopeless, ever 5 minutes so changed it to channel 2 and it seems to have settled down so fingers crossed

Rather than guessing the channel install InSSIDer and look at what networks are in your area first. Also make sure you are running the latest firmware on the router.

Once that side is taken care of, you should check your internal wiring is up to scratch. Every phone socket that is in use with any device must have a micro filter on it. You should also have no more than 4 sockets wired in. If you have unused sockets, you would do well to disconnect them as they just act like giant aerial loops picking up noise. If you can,fit a proper NTE5 ADSL splitter faceplate to the master socket, and plug the router directly into the master socket.

Dont forget to also make sure your laptop has the latest drivers for your WiFi adaptor. This is often over looked and can sometimes compound issues.

Once this is all done, you are in the best position you can be. If the router still drops connection, look at replacing it. I would personally recommend Draytek is budget was not an issue. If pennies are tighter then Netgear seem ok for the money, or a middle of the road solution would be the Linksys branded stuff as it is actually Cisco's home brand.

Just a thought is your router a dual band one?

Is it capable of doing both 2.4 and 5.8Ghz bands? If it is switch it over to the 5.8 Ghz band, this is usually less crowded & should give you better connectivity.
