which windscreen water?

Featured Replies

However, if you have an issue with any part of your window washer system and Skoda find out you haven't been using Skoda stuff, it will invalidate your warranty for those parts.

There is nothing in the user manual about a specification. There is a bit on using methylated spirits in extreme circumstances. The only time I could see there is an issue on the warranty is if you use low concentration or pure water and it freezes up. I have never had an issue with non OEM screenwash and in many cases have actually found non OEM stuff to be far better and also easier to get hold of.

I am however happy to be corrected if someone has been turned down a warranty repair as they were using aftermarket screenwash which was not fit for purpose.

No icy weather in my location, I only use 1z Kristall Klar

My old man told me he'd read it somewhere, and the dealer confirmed this when he asked them about it.

A quick google brings this up: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/147056-winter-screenwash-worth-being-aware-of/

I'm sure they would try and wriggle out of just about any warranty work if they can. Somehow doubt that VAG screenwash is really any different to any other stuff. Can only really see that pipes would pop off if the system freezes up are the screenwash gets slushy and starts causing higher pressures in parts of the system.

I'm happy to stick with the stuff I know works for me. Many years ago I was up in Aberdeen over Christmas and the temp wasn't getting above -12 during the day for a protracted period and dropping well below -20 overnight. Needed to top up my screenwash, found some Shell Summer & winter stuff, said to use undiluted in extreme cold. Problem was the neat stuff in the bottle was slush at the temps we were having!!

I use the one that skoda sells it was on offer the last time I was there so bought loads lol

De-ionised water and Isopropyl alcohol to stop it freezing, or cheap vodka!

The petrol station forecourts just dispense water, you need to buy a bottle of screenwash to add to the water.

Some Tesco forecourts dispense pre mixed screenwash now.

I am using the stuff that come with my car in the Auto Glym kit, surley this wont void the warrenty as they my dealer sold it to me???

When I last had my car services at the dealer they charged me something like £3.60 to top up the windscreen water..i thought it was a rip off..but if it's realy that exspensive then i guess i'll have to fork out in order to pass the MOT

Just go to local Poundland and buy a 1 litre bottle of concentrated screen wash.Makes 5 litres,I have used it for the last 5 years in my Furby and the works van and never had a freeze up yet.Good stuff and not a bad smell. I know I have a mark one fabia but can't imagine the washers are much different on a Mark two

I use the VW stuff, whole bottle into the washer tank.

It cleans the screen really well.

As for the MOT, in freezing weather you need to make sure the water does not freeze and stop them from working.

The genuine VW stuff look like a good deal for £3..car due for a service so will have to get some when it's in.I used the Lidl/W5 stuff last winter and had no problems with it..pretty much neat tho..The pre-mixed stuff from tesco/asda is pretty crap once it gets to -2/3C defeating the object of it :S The claims to -5C seem to be bullsh1t..

I've read that VAG fan jets can start to clog up over time if you use "ordinary" stuff in the washer tank. This is due to small amounts of residue in "ordinary" screenwash that doesn't exist in the VAG stuff, and limescale deposits from the water. The rise in pressure this causes in the screewash plumbing can cause a pipe to pop of it's connector. I don't use VAG stuff myself at the moment but not had any problems yet.
