u put anti freeze in the water tank for the windows?

Non freezable water :giggle:

I think it means you need to make sure that you add screen wash to the washer bottle.

Screen wash helps the wipers to remove dirt and dead flies etc. it also reduces the temperature at which the tap water it is mixed with freezes, some are rated down to more than -70 degrees Celsius.

You can buy it from any supermarket or automotive store (Halfords). There are instructions on the bottle to help you mix the correct ratio of screen wash and water to achieve the desired concentration.

You can also purchase genuine Skoda screenwash from your local dealer which I can vouch is better than the supermarket stuff. Not sure if the Fabia has fan jets but if so you will need to ensure that the screenwash is suitable for these types of washer jets as some contain additives that prevent it from blocking the very fine jets.

Take care, antifreeze normally refers to dosing up the cooling system. Screenwash is for the 'screenwash water'. Somehow doubt that the MoT specifies this as you need to vary concentratio levels throughout the year.

Think that this advice might be a bit misguided.

You can buy a sachet of additive to prevent the water from freezing but is this really part of the MOT test??

screen wash is what i meant but didn't know what it was called, and washer bottle is what i was trying to say..i didn't know what it's called

i've been filling my wash bottle with the 'screen wash' from the petrol station..it looks like plain water to me.. i'll empty the water and get some washer liquid before my next MOT.

Just put warm water in emoticon-0144-nod.gif

The petrol station forecourts just dispense water, you need to buy a bottle of screenwash to add to the water.

Ah understand now, yeah winter screen wash is required, get the one from your dealer good stuff, but the stuff in supermarkets is ok and remember you need to measure how much, if your in a very cold area well needs to be stronger

Don't go anywhere and ask for special windscreen water, they'll charge you loads of dosh

The windscreen washer fluid concentrates tell you how much to put in during different seasons.

I've just twigged ! It's 1st April emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Don't know about mk2 Furbies , but waaay back ,there was a lot of talk about MK1's having pipes come of and Skda reckoned it was because folks were putting in plain watet . Mine was off when I got it ( used car) , possibly because some **** had replaced /filled up wash bottle with water . I've never used less than 50/50 with a dash of Asda pov spec washing up liquid ( as it don't foam so much ,but gets rid if grease) and never had aby problems .In wthe depths of winter I might use 100% screen wash ( Asda's own) and even n last year's weather never had a problem .

From all the other "new MOT" threads there have been here, and the links they provide, there is NO mention of testing the screen washer for it's non freezing quality. The only test if for them to work.

I suggest the OP tells his friend to swivel.

I use 100% Pernod in the washer bottle.

It never freezes and turns a lovely white when mixed with rainwater on the screen. Its hard to see of course but the local bodyshop appreciates the extra business.

It also produces a lovely aroma into the car that makes you feel great and seems to make traffic gaps wider!

At just £32 a litre from Fine-Fare its good value. the only downside are the dozen pesky Alsations that constantly follow me around.

I have taken to using Super-unleaded to shake the pesky critters, but if they catch me in traffic they lie on the bonnet slobbering all over the screen.

I do find that if I keep squirting the washers they fall off eventually though.

 very good!

Just to cover the 0.1% chance of this being a serious question originally, only Skoda(/any-other-VAG-brand) screen wash should be used since the car has fan jets. But in any case that is the best type by a mile and cheap too.

Did hear about people during last winter runing out of screenwash and topping up with whatever they had in the car, my sister in law saw someone using vodka!

Never heard of just having to use VAG screenwash before, never had an issue with using other varieties. When I was living way up In the North of Scotland I needed to use stuff with a very low freezing point, especially last winter. Lidl's stuff was excellent and at a really good price.

I used Iron Bru last winter. I can recommend not doing this... haha.

I has been using a cheap one from Costco. mixes to make 30 letres. no mention of the fan jets, all seems to still work...

Decent WW fluid is probably fine - I like the Costco stuff too.

However, if you have an issue with any part of your window washer system and Skoda find out you haven't been using Skoda stuff, it will invalidate your warranty for those parts.

VAG stuff (bottle marked "G 052 164 M2") costs c.£3 for 1L bottle. Frost protection is to -70*C used neat, -16*C at 2:1. From the bottle,

"Suitable for use all year round for the windscreen washing system. Offers the necessary protection against frost, stops the jets from freezing up, frees the windscreen from dirt and protects both paint and the wiper blades. Can be used in all models, must be used for fan-type jets."

Also re just using water, there was a study recently into why lorry drivers get legionaires disease, turns out lack of screenwash is the issue!

You know it was a close call for me when the missus upped and left.

Long distance lorry driving or the Foreign Legion.

I’d no idea both carried similar occupational risks.

How we laughed when it turned out she’d only been for some Persil sachets and I’d signed up for 12 years!
