I think the problem now with these cars is they are now going for silly cheap prices so you have to ask yourself is it really worth spending double what they're worth to squeeze an extra 50bhp out of them...

You are right, financially speaking, but if I could go back would I do it all over again? **** yeah

bang on the money jamie!

Panel filter in standard air box flows better

Or a Jr or a k&n filter

That's the reason my car hasn't gone stage two, can't see the point blowing £1k on a car that's worth feck all

yes to be honest, the price of these cars, and the high price of performance parts, means to tune a stock car is just folly, having been there and done that, i wouldnt bother again, i would buy one done. You want a k04 turbo car, go buy one from stock, like an s3, would save a lot of money, and its not like there are a shortage of standard or modded cars if thats what you are after!

I mod cars because I enjoy it not for finacial gain

I don't smoke

I don't drink

I don't play golf etc etc

I mod cars lol

Money isn't everything ;-)

see i on the other hand smoke, drink, like fast cars and easy women ;)

as you know dude, let someone do the hard work (and spend a lot of money) then you can fine tune the car to how you like it, buy it done or get a car with a decent setup to start with! anyway what i was trying to say is to add another 30bhp, thats a LOT of money needed, either do it properly by adding a decent hybrid and get up to 300ish, or fit a big (mid range turbo) like the vf34 or the 2860rs, then at least you have the ability to get decent power for all the money you will be spending! k04 001 is pointless imo unless your own turbo is duff!

CAI is not actually a big No.

A proper one (not a cheap one with dodgy filter) is good when mapped with car. Something like a ABD CAI.

But when considering £ for BHP I can see why most people go performance panel filter and modded airbox.

Luca, you are getting too old my friend. :giggle:

Most guys starting out on the tuning program want to play around with there cars and spend money and improve over std, like you I , Billy, Clive, Chicken etc. But now we are all older and our hard earned dosh is being split into house, family, other stuff tuning cars is not so much priority to some of us now.

You wouldn't bother again coz you can't fit under the car anymore and your back goes......

Same point to VRSmike and the others.

Is't the point now that the fact that these cars are so cheap makes then a better option to tune. You are not wasting money on initial car.

Why do folks say wouldn't spend lot's on a car not worth a grand. What and you are happy to spend it when it was worth 5 grand. The tuning bits don't add value to a car regardless of price so what the difference on a car that's cheaper to buy.

I don't care about what the car is worth.... I get pleasure in messing with cars and will do when I am 90..

yeah Clive you say it......

To the OP like Clive has stated you seem to be going round in circles now

You got advise on all scenarios now which you should be able to work out best option

Fitting a K04-001 is easiest option as it bolts straight on with no messing and can run with you std stuff

You will need to map it and fit FMIC to deal with the extra power and providing the mapping does not show any fuel, air mixture issues job done.

Fitting a different K04 like the K04-023 (used in LCR's,S3,TT etc) means fitting extra stuff as missingmyvrs and OET have pointed out because that type of KO4 is design for a different exhaust, MAF, injectors that need to cope with the extra power over the K03s and K04-001.

Fitting a Hybrid K03s again will need more mods than a K04-001 as if mapped to full potential will take power past the 250 mark of a K04-001 and thus the VRS std injectors and other parts mentioned won't cope. Although you won't need to change manifold/downpipe

Missingmyvrs gives agood analogy of more power does not mean faster car if you can't get power down. With those bit sorted first and you will be very surprised how fast you can go on std turbo.

But good luck buddy which ever route you take, and keep the updates coming

lmao :giggle:

aint that the truth! still...i have old vws that are low and modified, just not the daily anymore!

still i think think booze, drugs, women and fast food are not to be underrated or overlooked, lets not forget...they are not a waste of money ;)

Thanks guys

I think i was lucky as the VRS i have now has a full stainless - miltek / supersprint, CAI stage 2 revo map, poly bushes and what looks like whiteline ARBs and koni shocks. if i believe what is in the file of papers which i got with her she has 227bhp and similar torque. i have had her 4 years now and have only ever serviced her but at 104k miles and tired paint work (respray apparently £1,600+ and flattened sills which need fixing and now most things on the car are over 9 years old) i am looking to start again with a 55 plate in silver, not too many miles. the plan is to do the new car up over time and keep her for a good many years as i like the octy mk1 shape and styling. i guess i was spoiled having bought a car with all the mods done. like anything though i am used to the power now and when i get the new std one i know it will feel slow so i am looking to take the new car over time further than my current one but as detailed above i need to look at what really needs doing and what benefits there are from doing it as it looks easy to get through £7k and still have a car which is not massively quicker than my current one. maybe i need to get the new one, get some suspension, wheels and a stage 1 map and leave it at that.

Thanks guys

Wise words buddy, now you are starting to think logically.......

Now where that genuine K04-001 for sale on Ebay....... :giggle:

If I could go back in time.........

I would still buy the car new.

Leave it std for the first 3 years unlike i did.

Source all the R32/LCR parts:

R32 FARB,

STEERING rack,

wishbones and lcr hubs.

neuspeed 28mm rarb

Weitec gt or straight in for kwv3s.

Lcr brembos

saved all these up and fited it with the std engine and map. that would give you an awesome handling car that altho not super powerful would certainly feel faster due to the handling.

Then next would be the lsd and a remap for a few years. once board of that I would the look to go hybrid or BT. the one i chose would dictate the parts needed and start to acumilate them. only once i had all the parts would i fit them.

mind i am now in a position i dont need my octy on the road as the fabia is my daily so i can do all the work myself which saves 100s.

End of it i would sort handling and braking first and just have a remap to tide me on. once handling is done you can then handle the power you want, be it 200 or 450+ personally still not sure what soert of power I want from mine but I have the handling mods sorted or at least ready to go on.

If you like the car and intend on keeping then why not tune them up. to what you want? on other hand why bother if you are unsure on the future or dont intend keeping it would be a waste of money.

make stevewonder an offer lol ;-)

Which VAG group cars is the K04-001 fitted to as standard?

clive will know, am not sure it is fitted as stock to anything. As its k03 fit, so all ko3 engines like the vrs had k03 turbos, and all k04 engines like bam etc had k04 023 which dont fit k03 engines. So i think k04 001 is just a retrofit upgrade, its kinda inbetween aimed as an upgrade over a stock k03 or k03s.

Which VAG group cars is the K04-001 fitted to as standard?

I don't think any did, certainly not on the A4 (Golf/Leon/Octy/Audi A3) platform, they might have been fitted to something like the B5 Audi S4

Thinking about fitting a new K04-001 to my 4x4 now but want to get a front mount and exhaust sorted first. Will probably go for a Forge FMIC and a Miltek but don't think they do anything off the shelf for the 4x4. Hoping that a mix of S3 and vRS exhaust parts will work/fit.

just reading up on it, its a retrofit upgrade, so although borgwarner make them, they are not used on stock vag engines as far as i can see

I was just wondering as I couldn't think of any either.

You are right, it was designed to fit the market of K03 and K03s as a more simple upgrade than going something like K04-023.

Popular upgrade on beetle,vw golfs 1.8t in the states.

You could argue it is a Hybrid K03s, but designed "as is" not re machined.
