1.4tsi + ethanol?

Featured Replies

I've been browsing the interwebs for information regarding if the 1.4tsi twicharged engine does cope with ethanol, but to no avail. :(

Anyone that knows anything more about it?

I do know one thing about ethanol and that it is extremely volatile. It's even carcinogenic if I remember correctly. Use gloves and take care emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

Ethanol is already in your normal fuels up to 5% by volume. It is quite volatile ( boiling point 78C ). It is relatively non toxic (unlike Methanol) and definitely not carcinogenic (Ethanol is the alcohol you find in booze!). It will dry your skin but not do much more than that. If you buy industrial ethanol, however, it is denatured to about 95% and it contains water and enough Methanol to make it toxic. Adding further alcohol (biofuel) to your petrol will carry no benefits :nerd:

+1

Although i think (but not certain) EN 228 allows upto 7% ot maybe even 10%. The other issue with Ethanol is that it contains less energy being equivalent to about 70% of petrol so your MPG will suffer.

But it's rated at 104 octane (plus that when you combust ethanol you get alot off water and water cools pretty efficiently) so you can in fact gain benefits if you got your car mapped for E85.

I'm sure I have read that the bio content in standard fuel is going to increase soon. At the moment it is between 5-7% and it will increase to 10% (I'm not sure when). I don't think there is any performance improvement, it's just slightly better for the environment.
