VRS questions (hope your not sick of them)

Featured Replies

Hi everybody

Another newbie looking at vrs's

Trying to grow out of my boy racer stage and am thinking about a vrs

i darent go for a test drive yet as i am stupid and will strait away want one like i did my last car

Few questions though

Im 6ft 9" what is the octavia like on head room

ive been in the works a4 and the head room is ok but the my left leg feels jamed between the stering wheel and the centre console

same with the seat leon

(dont know if they have as much in common)

I know i wont be dissapointed with the performance but currently i am kicking about in a modified ford focus that also has uprated suspension

and to be honest i rag the tits off it every single day to and from work

the porshe boxter and scooby dont want to play any longer (not trying to show off just giving you an idea of the speeds i mean)

will i be dissapointed with the stock setup or is it pretty good

has anybody else had a focus previously what do you think to your vrs now

i love the looks and handling of the focus but want more power and space (bloody kids)

I know a test trive is the only real answer but like i say i am stupid and impulsive

As the seats can be lowered with a lever the headroom shoul; be OK, if fellow Biskodian Quinten notices your post he should reply he's quite a big boy and have never heard him complain ;)

I have driven lots of focuses and am curently driving 150+ miles a day in a C max 1.6 focus - I can assure you the Octavia RS is leagues ahead regardless of what the biased media say about the Focus. And the handling is in my opinion is better remembering the Octavia is a large Hatch not in the same league as the smaller Focus.

I find the stock Octavia RS fine for road and track use its a great all rounder with excellent fuel economy.

Try one

You're 6'9"? Damn you're tall. How do you fit in other cars with such a height???

being honest, with the head height thing your best bet would be to goto a garage and try and set up a suitable driving position in the octy, see if it suits you ok

Here I am :D

I'm 6'5" both in height and width (it seems ;)) and I have no bother with head clearance. The seat isn't even at the lowest posisition and I can freely move my hand above my head. However, sitting in TaviaRS's SDI, the position was quite cramped, even he complained about it.

wow that is tall  .i had a 3dr ford focus done up to the nines and i have to admit it looked and drove great handling etc it was my best car to date, then bought a octy vrs and i was blown away with the power and comfort of the car would never give it back for my focus and now that it has been remapped it even better - go on treat yourself you know you want to :D

6Man9 should really be able to tell you about the head room...he's same height as you.

I wish I was 6'9"...I'm only 6'2" :(

I agree - send a private message to "sixman9" (one of the members of this site) - he has an Octy RS so should be able to let you know what its like.

Good thing its stock take this weekend else i think i would end up doing somthing silly

(although skyving off sunday to go to a show/meet thing)

Thats a good point need to work out where my 7" toutch screen and computer would go in an octavia

Anybody had a go in a volvo s60 2.4 turbo

(think that's what it was one down from a t5)

dad used to have one and i thought it was great

probley the closest thing ive been in to a vrs (performance/handling wise)

Im 6ft 9" what is the octavia like on head room

Hi James' date='

It just so happens that I'm 6'9" too, weigh 21 stones, and I have to say that I have little problem with room the Octavia vRS (I've had one for 1.5 years).

My knees are quite high up of course, and there is very little passsenger room behind me (but who cares, I'm driving), but there are at least 2-3 inches between my shins and the dash, which is most important. Headroom is great too, usually have my seat right down though. As for other VW cars (based on the MK4 Golf), the Octavia feels the roomiest and actually does have slightl y more front space than the equivalent Golf or Leon (I test drove the Cupra R 3x times, so I know that pretty well). At first it did feel like the seat wasn't supporting my legs well, but I do 90 miles/day, so you could say I got used to it (I had a Mk3 Cavalier SRi before).

As for other cars, don't bother with the Civic Type R or [old'] Accord Type R they won't feel right. I've just spent 1400 miles in a Seat Altea, and this HAS TO BE the best car for guy's our height (I can actually put my knees UNDER the steering wheel, plus there are 6-7 inches of head room).

I actually found out about the Octavia via the Tall Club of UK (NOT a member, just did an internet search), some guy like us already had one ;). I test drove mine twice, passed an M3 on a dual carraige way, got a loan on the house, bought one in weeks :D.

Go on man, take one for a test drive.

Sorry, have to disagree with the popular view here, I don't find that our (05, so it isn't tired) Octavia vRS handles as well or is as composed as a sportier Ford. Our Puma (01, 48000 miles, on original suspension) is in a different league in the twisties, the vRS feels like a sofa in comparison, we've also run the two cars down the same road and the Puma gets away from the vRS I'm afraid. We've also had a 1.6 and 1.8 Zetec Focus within the last month or two (lease cars) and a few years back I had a 2.0 Focus. The Puma especially can be placed perfectly, body control is brilliant, part throttle response is smoother being normally aspirated, steering is very communicative in comparison, brakes are far easier to modulate, turn in is on another planet. The Focus seems to have similar ride quality but the body control is better I reckon. Yes they usually have less power.

The vRS is a comfortable cruiser that with modifications I am sure could handle well, but in standard form you could be disappointed coming from a sorted Ford, Subaru or the best Peugeots.

But for 90% of driving the vRS is very good.

Thanks for all the great response

sounds like the headroom wont be to much trouble

hope the baby seat can fit behind and have more leg room though

i cant beleive ive only just twiged its a five door rather than my three

getting a two year old into his seat will be easyer

right thats my new excuse for wanting one to the missues

But the handling is always going to be questionable

problem is nobody beleives how quick my car can take country roads until they follow me most people just think "ford focus cant be that good"

even as standard they are quite good

and my sespension is rock solid so anything will feel soft

after 4 years you just get used to it

Although i think the extra power will take my mind off of it

Will have to just go for a test drive and find out first hand

see if i can scare the sales bloke finding out

Right whaere is my local skoda dealer mmmmmmmm

Oh yes !!! the missues want to go leicester tuesday

  • Author

popped down the skoda dealers today for a look

Sat in the showroom one and had a good look at it

as for space not a problem loads of head room and leg room

a bit better than my focus actually

it was the half leather and cloth seats and i really liked it

Gutted that the demo car was not there for me to have a play in

or the one vrs they have that is in my price range was not there either but i will be back

one thing i didnt realise

God damn that is a big boot

just need to sort my insurance at the origonal 2 grand quote is far to much

but they do still think im 24 (I HAD TO TELL THEM I WAS 25 THREE TIMES)

i want one now even more than before

just hope i can get enough for my focus

i can actually save money changing to the vrs from a focus 1.8 (100 quid a month)

in the twisties

You must be a Scoobynet member :rofl::rofl:

might be too late to mention now as you may already know, the steering is also height and rake adjustable.i'm 5ft 7 and get lost in the drivers seat.thanks god i jack the seat up

You must be a Scoobynet member :rofl::rofl:

Busted by Insp Holmes :P ;)

I'm surprised they refer to "the twisties" on Scoobynet as where they really excel is on rollercoaster style undulations with nasty cambers and unpredictable surfaces covered in wet mud and leaves, with twisties thrown in, but maybe that would be a bit of a mouthful :D The standard vRS just can't hack this sort of road at pace, I've not experienced a standard VAG motor that can, driven in RS4 and passenger in RS6 included. I'm not a VAG hater though

Get in on the Neuspeed rear ARB group buy!! It transforms the sofa into a single seater ;)

Went for my test drive today

i didnt realise i got to take it out own my own for an hour :D:D:D

honest sir i didnt spank it

I really enjoyed it but when i got back into my focus i was not a dissapointed with the focus as i though i would be

The vrs is great fun in terms of performance

but its not a toutch on the focus when it comes to the corners

but as stupid as it sounds that makes it more fun having to think about the corners were the focus you can chuck it into anything and its happy enough

it cant really go fast enough to get into trouble

loads of leg room and head room ligtle tight on the bum :o but im not really used to sport seats

only thing i was not happy about was the dealer there is a black vrs with 8000 on the clock for 12500 when i asked if he was prepared to play with the price he said yeah but turned down everything i offered

i said if i turn up tommorrow with cash can i have it for 11500 (ok a bit cheeky)

not a chance

12000 No

he didnt want to drop even a few hundred off it

and he basically told me that i wouldnt find one second hand as the dealers are buying them all

and to top it off the focus has bust a driveshaft or somthing

typical

Who mentioned a Puma? It's like me comparing my Octy to my 205. The Pug will annihalate the Octy in the corners but then it would do. Laws of physics and all that

I would agree though that if we must directly compare a Focus and an Octy vRS in terms of handling the Focus is better - Full stop. What is the better car for day to day use - well from owning both in my time I'd say the Octavia and that's where I've got my money.

Have a look at this, plenty of headroom.

No, seriously, at Pilling Motors in Milton Keynes they've got a red Octy VRS ex demo, less than 2k miles, think it's around
