Vrs front knocking noise

Featured Replies

Have a very slight knocking noise at slow speeds over rough ground, is this common as I had a 07 octavia 1.9tdi elegance and it had the same noise, it seems a little easier to hear tho on the vrs with the bigger wheels, both cars had 90-95k km on them. All bushes seem ok too.

Thanks in advance

  • I was chatting a friend of mine with a 07 elegance and he found his noise, was front wishbone bushens , was only a tiny bit of play in them which he found with a lever bar, replaced both sides €5 each

  • had same fault on my vrs, had it on the ramp and nothing obvious to see or feel in any of the joints or bushes... very very slight wear marks on the rubber of the front rear wishbone bushes the ones

  • I'm going to change mine soon,I'm a vehical tester and it's the front bush on the wishbone is more common,Im convinced that's my noise as even minimal play will make this noise.

I've recently started to notice this on mine too (2007 (57) - 40,000 miles).

It had the rear tie rod ends done just before I bought it so I suspect the front wishbone bushes are shot as well as I can 'feel' the knocking through the steering wheel as well as being able to hear it.

could be drop links. i had knocking from my alfa's suspension and was always the droplinks.

Drop links don't go on octavia ll, even tie rods don't go ether that much unless high milage, most common would be the wishbone bushens but as said above u would feel this more in the steering.

Anyone else have this front slight knock?

yep me, replaced drop links, dealer couldnt find any noise (as usual) so tomorrow when gettin serviced at a local independent place i'm getting the front ARB bushes replaced and he is going to check for anything else obvious

I have this too (2007 vRS) there is left to right play in the OSF wheel too I presume its linked I havnt had a chance to get underneath but had a quick look on the jack and all seemed OK no signs of any free play so I think it maybe coming from somewhere in between the track rod and the steering colum.

Answer me this when the car is idling and you slightly turn the wheel left to right quite fast do you get a knocking?? i do and personally think its the steering rack thats knackered but then why would you get a knock from the left :wonder:

I do but have you tried doing that with the brake on to eliminate pad movement? Never the less a knocking while turning full lock could be steering or suspension. At idle if I slightly move the steering wheel it knocks and moves without the wheels moving and with the 'Quater to 3' play in the drivers wheel only leads me to belive it is a steering fault. The track rod end is ok so may be its where the track rod meets the rack or even worse the rack itself! Im hoping a trackrod or a colum joint/bush. Ill let you know what I find if I get around to looking :-)

It's very unlikely it's the steering rack,iv never seen one go.

Mine has done this from new chaps (2007 vRS 170 PD) Nothing has fallen off and the car has done 61k with no issues (touch wood) so i wouldn't worry about it. Notice it more when going over speed bumps.

yeh i notice it more at low speeds and speed bumps, it just happened in August and have been trying since then to get it sorted.

Hi, Had similar knocking noise from front of my octy vrs. 2007.

Thought it was from gearbox... or that area.

Used to rattle (knock) at low speeds never(Whilst stationary)

When the rattle used to start would do it for 100m or so

mainly whilst taking a tight right hand bend (road with a lot of camber)

Had my son look at it up on the ramp, couldnt find anything at first

"have to live with it"

THEN.... he took the car in to service

Found there is a heat shield down the back of the engine

that was touching the exhaust ocasionally... result one quiet octavia.

Hope this is some assistance.. to you

cheers chilledin ;)

well i was right it is the steering rack, warranty is up tomorrow :wonder:

Looks like a reconditioned one for me then. :dull:

Bad news mate have you got play in the drivers wheel? I have but cant pinpoint it, the MOT Tester couldnt either as it flew through its MOT Two weeks ago.

I'd be down my local dealer pronto then, if nothing else to enable them to confirm the diagnosis. At least then it can be ordered up and fitted after the warranty expires at no cost to you...

Thats the thing i have no play in anything cant pinpoint the left hand knocking but assuming steering rack, also a knocking from the rack on small left to right turns of the wheel.

Bloody car.... but i like it though :giggle:

Back to my local mechanic to have headlights realigned and more looking for worn bushes etc.

Found a few racks on ebay, worth a punt???

It'll be a drop link. Had one causing the same myself and when replaced the noise and other issues went away :)

I'd imagine a steering rack will be a tough swap-out.

With this in mind I'd be replacing drop links and bushes first...

drop links were done last month.

I know what you mean I love my vRS I taxi it I spend most of my money on petrol but its worth the ride lol im sure my knocking is either the track rod or a colum joint/bush but im not going to worry about it at the min as it passed an MOT OK. I dont know much about what parts they re-new on a re-coned rack but id expect the rack and pinion is changed, the pinion may be internal to the rack but if its on the bottom of the colum id change that too.

I've had this problem for two years and no dealer or inderpendent has been able to find it!

I also suffer with steering play, and the car wanders quite badly. I almost feels like there's play in the rack.

I've also noticed the NSF arch sits noticiably higher above the tyre than the OSF. I get strange cornering characteristics as well.

To date I've only had a wheel bearing replaced.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a local independent to strip the front legs down?..
