miles from a tank in a standard vRS

Featured Replies

My old polo 1.4tdi, W reg 2000, used to give me 500 miles of motorway driving, doing a steady 70-75, before i had to think about filling up again.

This week, I knew I'd be doing a couple of long trips so have kept an eye on my journeys, again steady on 70-75.

- 100 miles coventry to w London then a return trip of 320 miles London to S Wales and back.

My petrol light came on around Windsor this eve. So I'm home after doing 430 miles and the dash says I've got 50 miles left half way into the red....

Hmmm...don't trust it. Shall be filling up tomorrow.

Is this just the difference between a 1.4tdi and 1.9vrs or a thirstier than it should be engine?

Expansion tank mod - 53 litres (full to brim) I would say 550-650 miles for me.. I have never had less than 520 miles

  • Ah yes. Forgot there were two different gearboxes. I have the earlier and longer geared one. And as I said 70 is 1800rpm in mine. Also Let's it get up to top speed a little better. Mines standard an

  • My fuel light just come on tonight on the way home from work, 526 miles since the last fill up.

It's winter time. The diesel's thinner than in summer time. I pretty much see 400 when the light comes on showing 65 or 60 left. It can be a pain trying to achieve 500 miles to a tank. A couple of stop/start days and a general lack of longer journeys don't help. Achieving a long term 49 or 50 MPG is reasonable IMO.

Was getting 58mpg on the run down from Cov, 57mpg to Wales and 55mpg on the return. Average speed of 62 mph.

dont you mean thicker?

things get thicker in the cold.

I get 500+ in mine doing the daily work run of 82 mile on town and M4/M48 70ish to work then 60 home on cruise.

indicated 52-56mpg

High 300's to low 400 's for me.

i get 500 regular in my se

thats just mainly town driving

not had a run in it for a while

That sounds about right.

The most we have seen on a tank is about 560 miles going down to Cornwall and part the way back.

That are so many possible variations that can affect fuel economy.

The big difference you will find between the 1.4 and 1.9TDi is that the vRS will be much better at faster speeds in terms of fuel.

We have seen 50 mpg while doing silly (I mean really silly) speeds on the Autobahn with three passengers and a boot full. It's all thanks to that nice long 6th gear.

Phil

the most i've had out of my tank was 480 with about 10 showing left on the trip computer and that was driving up to scotland.

currently getting 370/380 out of the tank around town (90/95% sensible driving but start stop & only 3 miles drive downhill to work), but is as high as 420/430 during the summer

Arent the 1.4tdi polos 3cyl?

I normally get about 400 miles from a tank with a mixture of town, cross country and motorway driving.

Arent the 1.4tdi polos 3cyl?

Yes. Another factor to consider in the slightly higher consumption especially round town. However the vRS will be much better and nicer to drive on a fast cruise where the engine won't be screaming.

The old polo never felt it was screaming really, 2500rpm when doing 70mph. Turbo kicked in @2000rpm and then really dropped off at 3000, by which time you'd be doing 80mph.

I just thought I'd get the same out of a tank with my vRS. maybe the extra 500cc makes a big difference....?

I shall brim the expansion tank to see how many litres it'll take, and then whisk the wife away for an early Valentine's weekend ;)

520 miles - is that always using the mod? I never even tried to fill the expansion tank on the polo, don't know if it had one...

And compare that to 1800rpm at 70 in the vRS. Much more relaxed.

I think the revs at 80 are about 2000rpm.

At 3000 rpm I think it may well be triple figures...

Thats 520 miles with around 50 left on the clock. Yes with the expansion tank mod.

I took the whole nipple out. Did overfill the thing this week though which ended up with some backsplash

I do stupid miles, hence the need for the range..

Makes me wonder what sort of mpg I used to get from the 1.4TDI..... 65-70mpg+?

The tank on the Polo was 45 litres I think...

Same size tank on the Fabia too.

Ah well. It's not all about MPG figures to me.

Yes it would be nice to have the likes of a 1.4 TDi but it would make long trips to Germany with 4 people in the car less enjoyable. We both also enjoy the extra power and ease of "go" the 1.9 130 gives you. We get about the same MPG on this car that we were getting on our old Pug 306 1.9 non-turbo diesel (71 bhp).

I must have a different gearbox then, as I get 33mph per 1000 revs in my VRS in top gear (GPS speed), i.e. just over 2,000 revs for 70mph.

If you're looking at the short term or trip MPG, as opposed to long term or instantaneous...

I've read that the trip MPG calculates based on the last 50 miles or so of the journey. Or was that the range left from the nearly empty tank...?

Anyways, I bet if you look at the trip 2 figures they'll be a tad lower.

Yeah it is. I was flipping back and fore to see the difference, its on 54.4mpg

I totally agree about the extra power and ease of accelerating from 50 to 70 without having to change down from 6th

I'm also on 15" wheels too.

There's a thread on the subject here:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/177793-fabia-vrs-gearbox-changes/

I get 430 to 450 every week to the tank and thats a fast commute on m1 every morning 30mile (always running late). Steady on way back and all the town driving at weekend.

I only get 300-350 miles. But my trip to work is short and when not driving to work I like a brisk drive!
