miles from a tank in a standard vRS

Featured Replies

Ah yes.

Forgot there were two different gearboxes.

I have the earlier and longer geared one. And as I said 70 is 1800rpm in mine. Also Let's it get up to top speed a little better. Mines standard and I've had it up to 138mph (legally).

I'm also on 15" wheels too.

There's a thread on the subject here:

Same I've just had a 05 plate engine and gearbox fitted into my 53 plate vRS and there is a MASSIVE difference in my opinion, gears are a lot shorter it seems! mine is doing 2000rpm @ 60mph :o in 6th! I dunno whether i prefer the old gearbox or new one, haha I could swap it cause i still have it

filled up at asda the other day got 310 miles then got Shells premium stuff a couple of days ago and got 430 out of a full tank, well worth the 8p more a litre i thought

but I was getting at least 500ish off the other engine / gearbox most times

Only had my 07 vRS since Oct lets hope I can get 500-550 to a tank this summer....

I just got 400 miles to a full tank of v-power,

This was over 3 weeks of 15 mile (ish) journeys of town/motorway/country roads and driven quite carefully

It was my 1st full tankfull in the VRS so I dont have anything to compare it to, but I was expecting more

Can i ask what modifications you need to do to be able to use the expansion tank ?

None. Just don't brim it then leave it in the hot sun all day from what i can gather or the fuel will have nowhere to go lol.

As far as I'm aware it needs to get really ridiculously hot before it expands so much it leaks out.

My best from a tank was 660, cruised everywhere at 55mph haha. I usually get around 600.

When the weather is cold I'm down to around 530-550.

Obviously that's with the tank vented and filled up with about 55 litres

Yes I think they changed it so as to reduce the gearing and reduce the ammount of down-shifts required and be kinder to the clutch/DMF. I personally like the box I have as it makes it much nicer on the motorway. Plus we have seen really good economy at high speeds due to the lower revs. I think 3000 rpm will see triple figures in 6th gear... so the only downside is the ease of speeding with the lower engine RPM.

I tend to have 54 mpg or thereabouts as an average in the trip computer. In this part of the world longer journeys are the norm but 50 mph in sixth gear will give you very, very good mpg on a longer journey. If you genuinely want more than 500 miles out of the tank then its got to be less than 50 mph in 6th - IMO. We reckon on putting in £10 of diesel and getting 100 miles out of it. Totally different if you burn rubber as it were - much less mpg - and very short journeys and nasty little hills will eat fuel.

Best I ever had was 645 miles from a full vented tank. That was from full to half driving like Miss Daisy, then booting the final half.

On average I see absolutley no less than 500 miles even when being childish, normal service is 550. (53 plate with the long box, 2000rpm at 80 is soooo sweet!)

Hi Lee, so what mileage does your fuel light come on?

Ive had around 900 miles from a tank and a half driving to the south of france doing 90ish all the way there, town driving etc and 90 all the way back (smooth flat roads ftw)

I find my cars more economical in 5th @ 70mph than 6th.

I get 450 miles on £50 which is 30 something litres in my VRS.

About 55mpg in the winter driven sensibly - 58-60 odd in the summer

Hi Lee, so what mileage does your fuel light come on?

Honestly? I don't know, I never let it come on! These mileages are before it comes on!

I get between 350-400 miles from a tank (45-50 mpg). I normally fill when the fuel light has just come on.

On the other hand, our 1.9 TDI does between 450 - 520 miles per tankfull. High in Summer and low in winter.

shocking recently 358 for a tank! I put it down to supermeerkat fuel personally!

Same here. Done 170 miles up to now and trip computer saying I have 120 left. Cold weather and short runs really take their toll on the MPG.

I filled up early in the week with Shell's original diesel without using the expansion tank. Done around 120 miles on the motorway at normal speeds along with traffic runs for the rest of the remainder. Got to 311 miles and tank is now showing i have 65miles left. Would anyone say this is normal around this time of the year? Guess the VRS isn't as good as i thought it would be for my daily run to work as all it consists of is traffic going to work and home...

When I started to used my car to go to work, I would only get about 340 ish out of a tank if used purely for that kinda style.... They aren't that great on the very short runs.

Don't forget MPG is totally dependant on how you drive.

A heavy right foot, constant throttle, brake, throttle, brake etc will kill economy in any car.

Sitting in traffic with the engine idling will give you poor MPG.

You'll get worse MPG in winter as winter diesel is at the pumps, and it takes longer to get the engine up to temp.

Look further ahead, use engine braking and use your gears properly, you'll probably end up getting much better economy :)

Light came on at 260miles on Monday. So, never fear, it could be worse :D

I roughly get 425-450 miles. Definitely noticing the engine taking longer to warm up in this cold weather.

450ish with mixed driving to £60 @ £139.9

Started to log mine recently, mainly trips into London. Half on m/way half stuck in traffic... Get 380-440 miles (£53-58 per fill up). Driving conservatively.

Before I had 480+ on mixture of a roads and m/way, not driving so conservatively..
