what a weird day.

All the magic is in the cams and the map, the rest are basically service items and broken bits being replaced.

The plugs and leads need replacing on ANY 1.4 16v over a certain age because they deteriorate badly due to continual pinking from running standard unleaded, I'm surprised they didn't replace the coil pack as well since these tend to suffer heat damage as the plugs and leads break down.

A remap alone will be a disappointing waste of money, get the head flowed, install new cams then remap. Should make ~165 BHP but will tick over faster and will stall easily below 3000 rpm, will also use much more fuel, but you don't get something for nothing.

So as mine has always run on Shell Vpower...if I got this ABT kit when it first came out I wonder if I could have said deduct the cost of those items (spark plugs and leads) as it does sweet FA in my case????........

..they are there for a reason...

I mean if it's "lets replace service items that could go and are know for failing".....THEN why don't they include a full timing belt/tensioner/pulley kit as these have been for the past 7yrs known for snapping/failing?????

So if I'm just an enthusiastic amateur.

Pray do tell...what is your knowledge/experiance on these cars?, and gained from what personal/practical experiance as you are implying you have more than me....I would like to know what better "specialist" I'm speaking to!

sepulchrave are you actually trying to rile fabdavrav up?

Friendly forum? No?

On topic, cams, headwork, inlet and flow are basically the be all and end all with 16vs. After its all done though mapping it is going to help it all work together effectively afterwards.

No. He had a pop at me (as usual), I'm simply standing my ground against his 'playground' bully tactics.

That's the way I've been brought up.

What's your point?

Edit: Also, if you want friends check your Facebook, don't bother looking for help with that here.

I didn't say I wanted friends, merely that the atmosphere should be friendly. If he's had a pop then fair enough, but no need to have a cat fight on a public forum. Thats what PMs are for.

I bet you thought your 99bhp fabia was quite quick!!! Lol :p

How would you of stood if you needed to make a claim through insurance? :S

Why not take the Fabia badge off and put the ABT badge there??? I think will look better but thats just me

£190 wich wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. so my insurance is£998, with is still hight but it is still cheeper than most of the sponsors on here.

haha this is some funny shiit.... Why don't both of you wind your willies in and get along...

If I'm honest I call b.s on most of the stuff in this thread, I can honestly say that I probably know more about these 111 series small block vw engines than all of you put together, have fun folks and chill out....

*dammit I need another 15bhp, must go and order me up some platinum spark plugs or whatever they were again?

It's nice to know that you know lots about the 111 series 4cylinder 8v (2valves per cylinder) engine........

...thing is we're talking about the 4cylinder 16v (4 valves per cylinder) engines (EA113 R4)....different series...... B)

Done abit more digging on the ABT kit (still waiting full confirmation)...

.... ABT usually like to leave the engine looking OEM in most of there kits (which explains the better filter in the restrictive OEM housing)...this means that to a dealer garage and everyone else the car is standard!! (even fooled the OP)...and not so obvious to insurance assesers! Also to make a good CAI is expensive!!!! I should know having done it!!!! and the kits that are out there are carp! (in my opinion)

As this engine has "wasted spark" ignition which does just that.."waste" a spark and power! When cylinder 1 fires so does cylinder 4...and cylinder 2 fires with cylinder 3 as the coil pack is divided in two!!!...Better leads would reduce the losses between the coil pack and the plugs so that the coil can provide all it's power (even "wasted") to the plugs unhindered. These are probably Magnacor as they seem to be the only people who make performance sets for this car. (Just ordered a set of the 8.5mm red KV85 series from Awesome GTI)

NGK Iridium spark plugs have a finer tip thus exposing more of the spark to the fuel/air mix, resulting in a quicker/better ignition (the engine uses a knock sensor to constantly monitor and will advance/retard in steps up to the knock point).

The Camshafts are probably Schrick as they make 244, 252, & 268 duration cams for the "roller" type heads fitted to the AUB engine.......(for the earlier "bucket" type heads fitted to 1996yr Polo 1.4 16v AFH they make 256, 264, 280, and a wild 292!!! this head is known as being more reliable and will take 8000rpm plus)

And lastly there's the remap......most companies only quote a max of 6 to 10% increase on this engine (I did alot of asking several years ago but spending around £650 on a custom level 2remap to get above the 8% "standard" map was not for me) Amd's map is £300 and gives 8bhp more.

Conclusion......the cams add alot, but can't be responsable for the full 40bhp increase (the OP hasn't said that the car is "lumpy" and ABT wouldn't allow it in one of their kits!, and the remap will allow the cams to be used to their full potential, but again can't take the full credit...so the spark plugs and leads must add about 6 to 10bhp!

The better air filter in the OEM housing will make it breath "slightly" better. BUT the OEM filter housing has smaller openings than the throttle valve, and tight bends(which were done to reduce intake noise). It also smothers the engine causing heat issuses and because of this it absorbes the engines heat as it's big, black & plastic! This heats up the air going into the engine which is the last thing we want! Hot air is less dense so has lower amounts of oxygen in it! Cold air is more dense and therefore has more oxygen in! Just what we want for better combustion. This applies to nat asp as well as turbo/supercharger engines (basic combustion principals).

As for the CATs the first one (built into the 4:1 tubular exhaust manifold) is a 200cell s/steel cat and the second one (under the gearstick) is a 400cell ceramic. Having had a 200cell s/steel cat as the second one does free up the engine.....but causes the ECU to bring up "emmissions below threshold" fault codes!!!...I went through everything on this and did LOTS of research/checking etc.....boils down to the fact the ECU has to register a minimum % of "cleaning scrub" between the first lambda sensor and the second lambda sensor.....so even if the emmissions are very low on the MOT test and everything else is fine, forget it!!... it throws a fault code up because it's outside the ECU's parameters!!....And you can get rid of it....£650 level 2 remap!!.......no thanks!!!..... B)

So if you have the ABT conversion ditch the OEM filter housing and fit a free-er breathing CAI system, then fit a free-er breathing exhaust/back box...maybe even fit the second 200cell s/steel cat......and then get the map re-done to suit!!!.....Defo give more than 140bhp!!!!.......:o

Good info there!

So if the AFH head is more stable, will it fit on the AUB block?

With regards to the CAT, would you say decat is best???

Good info there!

So if the AFH head is more stable, will it fit on the AUB block?

The AFH apparently won't due to the allignment of the internal water and oil ways!!! This is why they get a complete old AFH engine and tune it by fitting the 1.6lt rods and pistons.....so they make it a "long" stroke engine....then you can fit cams up to 292 duration!! as the engine needs to rev to over 8000rpm!!!!!

AS for "is our head reliable"........it's good for tuning but if you want over 180bhp aparrently not...VW had problems trying to get 210-220bhp using this head.....

As for decats......with MOT rules mean that every time you have an MOT you have to put the cat back on!!!....not worth it!......If you fit the cat that I had then defo get a remap to sort the "problem". If I had some money spare I'd fit the cat again, fit a set of Schrick cams then get a custom level2 map......then stick it on the rollers.....140bhp PLUS......as I have all the other mods, and my brakes/suspension are up to spec....... :giggle:

ABT gave you this information about their kit, really?

Looks more like guesswork and speculation to me so I'm afraid I'm calling BS.

I wonder how many horses we'd need to play with s stock vrs....

He means his pet cat sleeps in there because it's nice and warm.

You'd need a stampeding herd of wild horses because you need TORQUE, not horsepower to play with turbo cars.

So you're saying it's guesswork and speculation too?

He said that research was done but what the sources were I don't know. If you have any engineering knowledge then you know what's being said isn't tosh...

Anyway, at least he's coming up with info that helps the thread/OP....don't see that from your posts :giggle:
