EGR VALVE PLS HELP...

Featured Replies

Hi people my egr valve is playing up the AA say i should clean it and blank it of .what i have done is spray some egr cleaner through the back of the air box and im going to put some of the stuff you can put in the tank.

but at times it still pulls back on it self and judders so a bit concerned.does it need the egr valve ? and if i just blanked it off would this stop the judder? any help would be great thanks....den

If blanked off you will need it mapped out of the ECU.

Haven't done it myself but I believe it's straight forward to remove and clean (I intend to attempt this myself when weather warms up).

Be helpful if you told us what engine you have.

hi sorry yes forgot about engine size its the 2lt 6 speed one i think its 130 bhp. what do you mean mapping out? is this to just take light out on dash? and scouter what symtoms do you have?

Sounds like is a 140bhp BKD assuming its a diesel.

Might be worth cleaning the EGR out itself, depends if it's an electric one or vacuum operated, on the vacuum units ive seen the supply pipe split, all it needed was a bit cutting off and pushing back on.

The EGR light came on and had dealer repair it. They said and showed me it had seized up ,cost £205. Prior to that two weeks before we had towed our caravan for about 1500 miles up hills and down dales as they say so thought that the system would have cleaned itself out.Its the 140bhp with dsg Elegance 55 reg.now done 47000 miles.

this one is diesl and as you look at the engine there is a shiney stainless looking pipe coming from the right side of the egr valve does this tell you weather the valve is eletric or vacuum?and are the of the shelve cleaners any good?if so which one ive been useing a good one wynns i was told this was the best, not cheap but it seemed to work

If blanking off you will get a warning light on dash until the cars software (map) is changed to ignore it (i.e. mapped out), car should run ok even with the light on.

Mine is now producing a very noticeable hesitation under normal acceleration between 1500 and 2000 rpm, it will go, hold back, go and then hold back again before then accelerating normally which I am putting down to a gummed up egr.

yes mine seems to be like that in fact it cut out and would not start at all i sprayed some egr cleaner in and it fired up but ive run out till tomorrow so i used carburation cleaner and this did it ok.

so what your saying is that all that as to be done is blank it off and it will run and be ok?

also have you tried any of the cleaners? and did you find them any good ? thanks....den

I cleaned mine out last year after a a drop of around 8mpg on my old Octy 1.9tdi (non PD)...

You'd be amazed at A) how much crap it accumulates, B) how much better it ran after cleaning, and C) the awkwardness of the job (fully stripped down for proper deep clean!)...

I understand the newer engines might have the EGR located in a slightly easier place, but get it cleaned before blanking off, otherwise you're only stopping it getting worse, not resolving the issue!

All good after a few hours work! :)

I am led to believe that the engine will run fine without it (although I have no experience of this) I have not tried the cleaners myself, just waiting for warmer weather to try the " manual" method.

Anyone any pointers as to where teh EGR valve is, and how to clean it?!

If yours is a 2.0tdi BKD the EGR is located, as you look into the engine bay, right in the middle of the engine on the inlet manifold. When you look in you'll see the radiator and just behind that there's a gap with various pipes and bits, that where the EGR sits. A bit of a PITA to undo the rear most allen bolt as it's up behind with only limited movement using a standard allen key, much easier if you have a small ratchet that'll take an allen bit.

This picture shows the EGR, inside the red box, after you've pulled the plastic engine cover off.

You'll see there's 2 bits, the top is the EGR and has the silver pipe bolted on the side of it, the bottom bit with the electrical connection is the anti shudder valve(ASV), DO NOT unplug the electrics from the anti-shudder or you'll need to have someone with vagcom do a throttle body reset. It's easy enough to clean there are 5, 5mm, allen bolts that hold the EGR and ASV to the manifold 2 short on each and one long one, the PITA one, that goes through the ASV and EGR onto the manifold, and the 2, 6mm i think, bolts that hold the big silver pipe on. Carefully undo them all, and don't drop any!, gently ease the little vacuum pipe off the domed bit you can see at the top left and that's the EGR off. Next get yourself a suitable sized pot stick the EGR in it along with some cleaner, petrol works well, leave over night and the gently remove and residual gunk clean and dry and simply refit. If its really bad could be worth looking into stripping the manifold off and giving that a really good clean at the same time.

Hope that helps. If you decide to go for an EGR delete pipe I'd strongly recommend going with the one from Darkside Developments as at least with theirs it'll fit properly!

On the 1.9 it is at the rear of the engine (looking from front) on the left hand side above brake fluid resevoir

Carb cleaner is the best stuff for cleaning out EGR,s.They come up like new after.Plenty of threads on here about cleaning them and some with pics

Sorry, it's it's a 1.9. I only realised after posting that I'd jumped on board a 2.0 thread.

Yup, I've seen the before and after shots. That's what made me think it wouldn't do any harm cleaning mine as its 8 years old now.

Do you know I any thread with photos of its location on the the 1.9? I spent a good while searching yesterday but to no avail. I wouldn't be the most confident mechanic so a photo would keep me right!

How easy is the inlet manifold to remove in the 1.9 too?

2.0TDI PD140 or PD170? Two Words - EGR Delete

Fitted a Darkside Developments EGR Delete (Road Sport one, Retains the ASV) its solved engine stuttering (Well known on the PD170)

Anyone know what the cost of a remap would be if the delete kit was fitted?

Can it be done with vagcom/VCDS?

Given the amount of gunk on my 2005 A3 (BKD) when I cleaned it last year, I would recommend a delete kit and having EGR mapped out. I'd hate to imaging what the intake and valves looked like.

Nice smart idea to put soot and oil misting mixture back through the engine.

Replace it, it helps the engine perform better

It can't be done with VCDS.

Get a Stage 1 with the EGR mapped out, it will put a smile on your face

Do you need to block up the pipes that comes off it

If you mean the vacuum pipe, yes.

The pipe that goes to the EGR cooler and carries all those lovely exhaust gasses should be removed.

You get a blanking plate with the Darkside kit, and you can blank off the outlet of the EGR cooler.

Personally, I would remove the EGR cooler altogether and blank off the outlet at the turbo. A bit more plumbing to do though with the 4 coolant hoses that go to the EGR cooler.

I have this done and I can fully recommend it. It also takes away the future problem (which WILL happen) of the cooler springing a leak. The car seems to rev cleaner through the rev band because there is no dirty crap getting sent back through the inlet.............it makes sense, doesn't it ??

Guys,

I appear to have a different EGR valve than posted in all the threads ive seen, im assuming mine is an electric EGR and not a vacuum one? can anyone give me an idea whats involved in cleaning this if its any different?

Im also making the assumption that unplugging the electrical connectors with the ignition off to clean it is fine assuming the only time i turn the ignition on is when its all back together?

Anyway, picture attached to show what mine looks like, any pointers much appreciated.
