There have been two changes to coil packs (ie ignition coil with spark plug connector) since the introduction of the J version, and owners of very recent 1.8Ts with the AUM, ARX or ARQ engines may well have different versions fitted.

J is now superceeded to the L and A isn't available atm btw the l's are on backorder and expected delivery date is 21/07/03 and is also

I asked my dealer about this coilpack thing and he says Skoda Ireland have told them nothing about it.

I've only got 6k miles up on my vRS after 11 months. So should I go looking for problems where none exist ?

There is a known problem with certain coilpacks - I'm sure if you search the forums you will find enough to keep you busy all afternoon.

My car is similar age to yours, as I mostly drive alone and sometimes in quite remote areas I phoned Skoda UK to check the position. They said that there is now a good supply of replacement parts and their policy was that if one failed then they would replace it ( I think they said they would replace all the others at the same time if this happened). I persuaded them to replace all my coilpacks as a goodwill gesture (none of mine failed) as I drive alone and being told that in the event of a failure I could call the AA (potentially at the side of the M11) didn't fill me with glee.

I think it's probably worth a call to Skoda UK to check it out.

I spoke with my dealer again who checked with Skoda Ireland. He says there is an issue with the coilpack and if it goes it is replaced under warranty. It is not deemed serious enough to warrant a recall apparently. I also rang a no. of other dealers around the country and got the same story. 1 dealer said that only a small minority of RS's had their coilpacks go. Given the fact the vRS isn't very popular here I suppose that makes sense, as I'd imagine a higher percentage of them would go in the UK as there are more sold over there. Still - what if the coilpack goes during a long journey. Could I end up with damage to my engine ? Should I ask the dealer to consider replacing them ?
