Headlight Beam Aim (Brighter Bulbs)

Featured Replies

Fitted some Night Breaker plus +90% bulbs, main and dipped. The bulbs are seated perfectly in the holders. The lights previously passed the MOT fine. I generally drove with them dipped with the adjuster at the headlight switch on setting 1. Since fitting the new bulbs I have adjusted them down, turning both adjusters the same direction and amount, so they point the same level as they did with the headlight switch adjuster in the position it was. So now 0 is the same as 1 was.

With the new bulbs I'm getting the odd flash here and there. Generally when you're in the unavoidable situation of going uphill and your headlights are pointing in the air, but twice so far on flat ground. I try to ensure the beam cuts off just about at registration plates, and certainly doesn't get anywhere near the rear screen. There seems to be a little glare above the actual beam cut off, which makes me realise how stupid it would be to put a HID kit in those standard light units. When I adjust the lights down it seems too low to me - at 1 cuts off below numberplates.

Is there an ideal reference point to adjust lights to, or are people just interpreting my "brighter" bulbs as full beams - when they're not really being dazzled?

The way I did mine, measure hight of headlight from floor, transfer this on to a vertical surface then take the car to 25 feet away from surface, then bring headlight beam dip to the line measured from headlight, using the hex screws on the top of the headlamp easy peasy
