Potentially silly question - Any way of "testing" cornering fogs?

Featured Replies

OK, my FL Octy vRS should have cornering fogs as standard. At the weekend I was driving my brothers car that definitely has them and as I was turning corners I noticed a fair amount of extra light being thrown up, certainly more than I'm seeing on my Octy.

So this got me thinking - is it possible these have not been enabled or they are not working.

I looked in the Maxidot settings, I was told it was possible to disable them here and I found no mention of them at all - leading me to even more believe that they simply haven't been enabled.

Trying to explain to the wife what I mean by cornering fogs is difficult, so I can get her to wait outside as I turn the corner into our street any number of times and I'm still not convinced by her answer.

So, to the potentially silly question, is there any way of testing that these lights are actually coming on? What I mean is do they activate at "zero speed", so could someone stand in front of the car with the engine running and if the steering wheel was turned the lights should come on?

I know they only come on under a certain speed, I was wondering if they only come on over a certain speed too?

My car is due a service soon (currenlt 16k miles from new and the service indicator tells me it will want a service at around 19k) so I can ask them, but dealerships being dealerships they may not be able to confirm let alone actually enable them.

So, any way of testing them without the vehicle moving?

Can anyone confirm that the lack of mention of them in Maxidot is a good indication they haven't been activated?

Ta

They work when the car is stationary, the headlights are 'on' (not auto) and the steering wheel is turned or the indicator is turned on.

Testing them on the move can be tricky as they only work under a certain speed.

Also when you select reverse both cornering fogs should illuminate to help expose hidden obstacles if the front end swings out.

The vRS does not get the cornering fogs activated from the factory. They first need to be enabled using VCDS, then you should see the option to turn them on/off im Maxidot.

I had the option "Light assist" when I purchased my car. This got me the auto-dimming mirror, auto-lights, etc. This also listed "cornering fogs" so that is why I assumed it would have been enabled at the factory - I paid for the features so assumed they would have been switched on.

You mention the "Auto" switch. Are you saying these do not work when you have the lights set to Auto?

I leave my lights on Auto all the time. So to actually use the cornering fogs I have to have the lights swtiched to "on" rather than Auto?

The lights just need to be active for the cornering fogs to work.

I had to activate the cornering fog lights myself on my recently delivered 12 plate L&K, via VCDS.

Once activated, you can turn the steering wheel, get out, and you should see that the corresponding fog light will be illuminated depending upon which direction you turned the wheel.

If its not activated, check out the VCDS owners map for someone close to you to activate them.

They need activating, they work on auto too (as long as the headlights are on obviously). 5 second job for someone with VCDS.,

On my '57 Elegance the cornering lights will work when the lights are on, at standstill with the wheel centred and the indicator (either one) is on.

I had them activated through VCDS by Gizmo68

OK, cheers. Looks like nobody bothered activating them when the car was delivered.

If I don't get around to speaking to someone with VCDS before my service is due, I'm assuming there is no reason at all why the dealership shouldn't be able to do this on their equipment?

Could have just swapped places with the wife :giggle:

As had been said - these are not activated when the car is delivered new.

My experience - dealer did not have the first idea how to enable these, tried but failed. A friendly chap from this forum did it for me with VCDS in about 30 seconds.

N.b. there are two settings, one where they come on just with steering input, and another where they activate with the indicators (even if the steering wheel is straight ahead). On mine, I only have them coming on with steering input.

They work whenever the lights are on, irrespective if the switch is in the "on" position or "auto" and they will work fine when the car is stationary.

As to whether they are actually of benefit.... :wonder:

Looking at the latest brochure conering fogs are not listed for the vRS either as standard equipment or as a cost option.

The optional extra 'light assist' package lists coming home/leaving home, tunnel lights, rain senor and dimming rear view mirror for £175.

So the vRS isn't available from the factory with them enabled in the UK.

I know on the lower spec Yeti's its a £140 option. All you have to do is activate the feature using VCDS whenyou get home!

As above you can enable them yourself with VCDS. Your dealer may know how to do it but a lot don't.

I don't have the broucher to hand, but I am 99.99% sure that they were listed in the brochure when I purchased my car this time last year. It was ordered in December 2010 and it was one of the features listed.

Anyway, point is moot - if it was listed or not it hasn't been enabled, so I'll have a look at the list of locals to me and see if someone can lend a hand :)

Hi Mike, recently turned cornering fogs on on my 2008 Scout and no, no extra options turned up on maxidot to turn these on and off.

If you find someone stoofa, could you let me know as want to get mine done on my Octi vrs

as well & im not far from you in bury st eds

I'm based in Cambridge and looking for someone with VCDS to activate my cornering fogs too. Anyone in the are up for helping out a few members with this?

Would the op not be getting mixed up with the light ass/ and cornering xenon lights.

Had mine set up just last week by vRSCarl, absolutely brilliant and very useful!

I asked the dealer to set them up before I took delivery of the car, they told me that there was no way of doing it at all as it's not an option on the vRS. Me thinks my local dealer either cannot be bothered or simply as no idea.

What I don't have is access to the catalogue I used when I was sorting out my car at the back-end of 2010. I specced my car up, ordered right at the end of December and took delivery towards the end of March 2011. I am 99.9% sure that cornering-fogs were listed in the specification when I placed my order.

This is why I aksed the first question, somehow I had convinced myself that they should have been active and why I was surprised they weren't.

However I am only 99.9% sure and so I have to say yes, it is possible I was getting confused.

I asked the dealer to set them up before I took delivery of the car, they told me that there was no way of doing it at all as it's not an option on the vRS. Me thinks my local dealer either cannot be bothered or simply as no idea.

To be fair the dealers software isn't as advanced as VCDS so they could be telling the truth.

I asked my dealer to enable them on mine last Friday when it went for its first service but was told they can't be done as I don't have Xenons.....is this true?

Not true unless they are getting confused with the adaptive lights.

So.......does anyone have a VCDS near my area (north London/Kings Langley)?
