Featured Replies

Over the years the car picks up scrapes a dints and dings and dents and scratches, who really cares what undetectable minute swirl mark might possibly be left my giving a quick wash down once a year with a sponge, sheesh get a life people.

I can understand not wanting to spend hours cleaning your car, but at the same time, using a wash mitt instead of a sponge doesnt require any extra effort, nor does it cost much more, but your pain wi

  • If you just use a bucket and a sponge(BTW NEVER use a sponge!!!! Get microfibre or sheepskin) then it will be scratched to buggery by now anyway

  • You seem to have some issues...........I'm not anal either matey Anybody who takes pride in their car knows that sponges hold dirt and scratch paintwork You go ahead and use your sponge...

Not undetectable and as JRW said effects shine a lot of people get cars detailed as soon as they buy them OP's car now looks cleaner and has a deeper richer shine than it would have on the day first owner picked it up new. So obviously from the responses in here in answer to your question "who cares" a lot of us do! and in response to "get a life people" we like to keep our VRS's in as good a condition as we can nothing wrong with a little self pride IMHO.

I take pride in my car, when it gets a dint in the line of duty I take off the trim panels and kick it out from behind, what more do you want?

Don't let the usual twonks who think they are funny wind you up.

Yep, its funny really, i valet cars as a sideline and usually the most 'unkempt' cars have the most 'unkempt' houses (ie stains on carpets, mess, gardens not tended to etc). The state of someones car says a lot about a person.

I don't care if you wash your car once a year or once a day but why criticise other people for what they do and when they are just trying to give advice like pay £5 for a wash mitt instead of £2 on a sponge.

Not scratches as in a scratch that is visible from any angle through the paint, but micro scratches like you can see on the photos above.

They don't show up on white but are still there and still affect the shine.

They show up terrible on mine and also i used to have a Black Polo which was awful hence why i now have a machine polisher.

Not really bothered about the micro scratches if I'm being honest; as long as it looks clean. I polish it once or twice a year and that keeps the shine. I've always been happy with how my cars look and do take a certain amount of pride in them but at the end of the day it's a car. I don't keep them much past two years so maybe if I kept them 5 or 6 years I would do it differently.

What really boils my p1ss is people's condecending attitudes on here. I know a lot of people that are into their cars, both friends and family, who also use a sponge and bucket.

How many of you spend all that time detailing [that word makes me cringe btw] your car to then leave it sat outside open to the elements all day and night, all year round?Unless mine is being used it's in the garage.

God knows what your car looks like..Mine has no dings scratches ir dints..because I take care of it

If you dont want to thats your perogative

But to come on here and brag about your lack of car care to us who want te keep it looking as new as it was the day they bought it and take pride in that, is inflammatory and unnecessary.

I have not been condracending in the slightest.

Merely trying to pass on my knowledge to others

As I said. If you want to use a particular technique to wash your car , then go ahead

BUT

To come on here and berate me and others because we wish to keep our cars scratch free and clean is pathetic and somewhat rediculous

This is like a comments trail you see at the end of a YouTube video when cars are involved. Hilarious

Are you for real?

Incidentally I had a really good look over mine this morning after reversing it out the garage. Not a single swirl mark or micro scratch on the bonnet or roof. The odd stone chip on the front that's been touched in but other than that, my car is in showroom condition.

If any of you want to come and see me at Ultimate Dubs, VW Festival or GTi International and take a look over my car and then come and give me your wise words I will be happy to meet any of you.

Yes..I am for real and there are MANY people like me

Congratulations at having no swirls

I suggest its because you rarely wash it, rather than have the correct method of cleaning it

Do you use a pressure washer?

Snow Foam lance?

Sealer?

Wax?

I do....Does that make me anal?

No..I enjoy cleaning it and passing on the knowledge I have gained to others.

Goodbye

I find a scouring pad soon gets rid of sponge scratches

No problem anytime. I suggest a sense of humour course after your next car cleaning one.

For the record I use a Nilfisk C120 snow lance, wash mit and then various waxes and overpriced cleaning materials......but I also understand we're not all the same therefore let them be.

And you had a good look over how? Only when i was out at 7.30 this morning it wasn't sunny? Only under bright sunlight and under bright incadescent light such as a petrol forecourt will any swirls or marks show up. Its very sunny outside now and my car is covered in them.

I use a washmitt, a machine polisher once a year to remove the swirls and it is garaged. So i 100% doubt that you have no swirls.

It was quite light this morning by 7 up here but I take your point. I think with the car being white it hides them pretty well too. As I've said though I'm not that bothered by it as long as the car looks nice and clean I'm happy. I clean it every 2 to 3 weeks and whilst it isn't professional standard it's good enough for me. Fair play to those that spend the time giving it the full works but that's not for me.

We should probably get back on topic now fellas....

I just use Eastern Europeans for mine. Can never be assed to spend hours myself detailing / cleaning etc.

I did spend more time with black as it shows every tiny mark under the sun but it's different with white.

I can understand not wanting to spend hours cleaning your car, but at the same time, using a wash mitt instead of a sponge doesnt require any extra effort, nor does it cost much more, but your pain will 100% look better for it. Its win win surely?

In all honesty I couldnt give a monkeys if you use a broom to wash your car, just offering an alternative method that might work well in helping to get the most from your cars paintwork, as are the above people.

You know what Ash.... despite all this 'differing opinion' on here.... your car looks absolutely fantastic.

Thanks for showing me what can be done and the stuff you did it with.

Cheers.

Barry has done a great job, £300 aint that bad a price to be fair, Gtechniq is good but i find it quite clinical, also i like to do to my car everyweek if i can, spent 9 hrs on it today.

Midway through after wash, detar, clay irnox and just applying an old friend Dodo juice lime prime... i then followed that up with Zaino all in one, 2 coats of Zaino Z5 and 1 of Z2. Quite anal with my car's and i did have my own detailing business for 4 years.

Race Blue FTW

Oh and washmitts get them from www.sheepskinshop.co.uk

I think a swirl free car looking good is what I want, hence why my black VRS is going in for a full detail next month, then I'll keep on top of it and get it done once a year or so.

For some inspiration or not, depending if you like a clean car or not why take a look at http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/ for all you haters

Cracking job there, great work in one day too!

Shame it's gone so off topic with people all trying to give their 2p's worth on what detailing is / isn't and how a car should be cleaned! The guy was only showing off how great his car is now looking - It wouldn't have looked that good brand new after the dealers had "prepped" it and got swirls all over it :giggle:

Great job anyway, I'm also a DW Supporter so completely see the benefits and love nothing more then a properly detailed car but I understand it's not for everyone so just let them get on with it while us / those that are into it should equally be left to enjoy it.

Congrats again though, car looks fantastic! Such a great colour when it's properly polished and protected.

Ash - car looks lovely clean.

I have a novel way of dealing with my "bucket-and-sponge" micro scratches - just cover them up:
