Mis-fire! Doing my nut in!

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v (100bhp) 2005. About a month ago it was giving a fault on cylinder 3 or 4 (it made its own mind up) mis-fireing. I was adivised to change all coil packs and all spark plugs. It was ok for about a week when it started again. Its giving a fault on cylinder 4 mis-fire. When the coil is taken out it can be heard clicking. A compression test has been done which is fine. This issue is completly intermittent (does it when it feels like it), mostly when warm.

Any ideas on what the next step is? Ive been told to check the injectors... any help would be a big help as this is peeing me off!!

We had all this with a 16V just before christmas, an intermittent misfire on cylinder 3 that would take a while to show itself. Replaced the coil pack which seemed to fix it, a week later the light was back on, replaced the fuel injector, a week later the light was back on, had the scuttle panel off and checked the wiring loom for water ingress and continuity, the wires that control the fuel injectors and coil packs are in the upper ECU plug and were nice and dry.

We did a compression test, cylinder 3 was slightly down on the rest which didn't really give my extremely knowledgeable and experienced colleague any real cause for concern, they all increased when the compression test was done wet.

Not having anywhere to go, we did a leak down test with compressed air, when applied to cylinder 3 there was a faint hiss of air out of the exhaust pipe. The head was removed and an exhaust valve on cylinder 3 wasn't seating properly, we renewed that valve and ground the other exhaust valves in and the car has been fine ever since.

I think that a leak down test would be an appropriate next step.
