I have a 2008 Fabia with only 48k miles on the clock. It is a 1.4 with a BXW engine.

 

I have ran into a problem where my car started shaking, this was during the frosty period last month.

The shaking has got worse. I've been unable to use my car so I've been borrowing my girlfriends car as she is currently on maternity leave.

 

Ive checked all vacume pipe going to the engine for cracks and leaks, I've removed the throttle and cleaned that (just on the off chance), I've checked the exhaust mounts, there is no fuel leaking from the injectiors.

 

I changed the spark plugs to NGK from bosch. Cylinder 2 spark plug was black with soot.

After changing the spark plugs I gave it soon rev to burn any crap off and I finally got a check engine light which showed (P0302 cylinder 2 misfire detected)

 

I replaced the ignition coil on cylinder 2 and 4, I then took it out for a drive and ran in to the same check engine light with cylinder 2 misfiring. 

 

I feel like I'm all out of options.

 

Has anybody else came across this problem on the 1.4 bxw engine.

 

And if anyone can throw any ideas that I could try.

This is the spark plug from cylinder 2 which is the NGK plug I have just fitted along the a new ignition coil (individual coils)

You did almost everything to check for spark issues on cylinder 2.

Unless the high voltage lead for cylinder 2 is bad, you're left with an injector issue since the black spark plug shows clearly a very rich mixture.

Check the low voltage wiring to coil 2, looking for any insulation damage etc.  I can tell you which ECU pin drives that coil if useful for continuity testing?

 

If that seems OK, maybe a compression test might be in order?

Maybe try this as a quick and dirty indicator: unplug wiring from all four injectors so that turning the engine over won't start it up, then spin it on the starter and see if there's any unevenness in the way it cranks over, which might suggest a compression fault on one cylinder?

Green/yellow wire from coil 2 pin 4 connects from pin 72 of a 28-way connector (!) at the engine ECU.

I did do a test on the coil with a coil tester that plugs into the coil and then the other end goes on to the spark plug and it's flashes red when there is power going to the plug.

 

But I think it will be best to check the wires physically to get a proper check.

 

And thanks a lot for the info on the individual wire I'll check both ends.

 

If this is all fine, I've seen a fuel injector at euro car parts that's £160 with the discount code for the OEM injector.

 

Do you know if injectors can fail that makes the injector get stuck on open?

If the injector was stuck open it would leak and you've checked for that. Could move it to another cylinder to see if the misfire fault follows it though?

Thanks Ill give that a go tomorrow if the rain stays off. hopefully it is something like that, that will be an easy fix and easy replacement.

 

I've checked the green and yellow wire at both end and it all looks good.

Don't buy parts without finding evidence first. Unless you are too rich 😎

Injectors fail in different modes. There is not necessarily only a stuck open and stuck closed fail pattern. As usual there are failure modes in between.

Here are a few possible modes:

• injector solenoid partially shorted (lower resistance than normal)
• dirty injector
• partially stuck plunger
• broken spring

Each failure can be detected with proper diagnostic tools.

 

Do what Wino suggested. Swap injectors. Have a look at injector seals. Start with a cleanup.

I had no compression tester so I decided to get a garage to do a compression test, and then I remembered I had a 12 month warranty on the car that covers the engine so I took it back there and they tested it, and the compression was fine so they took the fuel rail off and said there was an issue with the cylinder 2 injector and the fuel rail wasn't looking too clever, so they replaced the fuel rail and the 4 injectors and luckily they did it for free under warranty.

Unfortunately I'm not too rich, but I wouldn't mind being as rich as that fuel mixture was thro haha
