Xenon HID Upgrade

Featured Replies

Has anyone with HID lights upgraded them to more powerful units? Some prices I have seen range from £80-----£140  .................EACH!!!!!!

I'm assuming that you mean OEM xenons? Sadly, I haven't but am also interested in the outcome of this. How might it be posisble?

Yep OEM. I'm interested in finding out if the light units for these are available in different outputs. (bigger wattage)

I have no idea. I know that with aftermarket set-ups you can upgrade the ballast and bulbs but I guess that the ballast is built in to the light unit itself so would be difficult to change. Having said that, I'd pay £100 for brighter lights - the xenons are good, but I think they could be even better.

I think HID's are great, but the design of the optic's let the bulb down....... So it doesn't really matter how much output you have.

Projector headlight let the side down.............

The wattage is always seems to be the same, but what you can get is a different colour range. Standard ones are 4300 ?? and then you can get more white/blue ones. However there have been several reports elsewhere of people failing MOT's when they go above 6000 because the output is too blue.

Projectors > reflectors.

Anyone know how to fit a cine projector bulb in a car??????? The last one I saw was 1000 watts :nerd:

I've had 6000k hid bulbs in projector fittings in my new beetle for several years, no problems with MOT , aslong as they're alignment is correct . Bugs use a Non canbus electrical system, ( I've no idea about skoda electrics)

My MOT was a couple of weeks ago, I believe you need auto-levelling lamps with squirters from 1st April , on dipped headlamps

Oh yeah, bulbs rated at 35w

L@@K >>>> http://www.piaa.co.u...?ID=xtwhiteplus

I've had some of these before, H1's fitment in My Fiat Bravo 150 (57) Multi-jet D. Original lights looked like candles in jamjars!

After swap made a big difference. But this car also had projector fish eye lenses. These make any light source look toilet on the road.

You don't gain "light on the road" by upping the Kelvin...... Look at all the London boys in the Bema'z and E-classe'z with 8000k+ Blue lights :@ ...

Good for showing up reflective paint or police cars or scorpions, But pointless at helping you see where your going.

Human eyes respond best to true pure white light (4300K).

oh, also If your running the Octavia II PreFL like me, The canbus / ECU is really mardy about bulb wattage. Unless you fit the correct wattage bulb for the fitment type it will through up an error on the dash and ether cut the power to the bulb of strange things happen.

Not sure if this effects HID circuits??? OEM HID power is 35watts. On eBay I've seen 50 and even 75watt HID upgrade kits.

My OEM HIDs are made by Osram and the bulb & ballaster live in the headlight, just take the clear cover off. (Don't fry ya self, 85v inside)

If you can't see where your going with twice the OEM power lights you need your licence taking off ya.....

Regards............

OK guys a strange one - has anyone fitting HID kits to non-OEM projector lights on a pre-FL Octavia had subsequent leveling errors show up?

I had coding for a Xenon kit done last year (xenons without shutters and canbus check disabled on the dipped beam) but didn't actually fit them for months and in the intervening time had the bulb warning light illuminate on the dash (but no maxidot message). The latter occurred when I flashed the main beam and braked at the same time. Over Christmas I fitted the Xenon kit (50w 6000k) and also changed to LED sidelights, uprated main beams and also swapped most of the rear lamps but the bulb warning remained.

I've recently had some work done and as part of that the lamp warning was checked and it showed a level motor problem. This was cleared and has been fine for a while with the manual levelling working OK but came back again on Saturday night in the same circumstances whlst reversing onto my drive - main beam on and braking.

So any ideas on why this might be cropping up and whether the coding might need another tweak?

As an aside I had an MOT done last week and it flew through with the LED's and Xenon Kit despite not having slef-levelling!

I'm guessing here.....

Sounds like because you've had the HID's code enabled/added, but your car shipped with stock halogen headlight units. The ECU is now looking for auto leveling sensors/motors that are missing, hence the error??? Or is it because you are running a 50watt HID setup and the computer is looking for stock 35watt OEM’s? Perhaps the HID error circuit didn’t get turned off when you had it modded?

I'm also talking about light problems on another thread.

I'm trying to remove errors. I was told you can turn off bulb error sensing on individual circuits on the pre FL models via VCDS. I need to research this further. Good job you chirped up skomaz.

Dude what do your LED rear bulbs look like? Is it a good show? Where can I get the VCDS modding done? Do you know?

I’m also thinking about setting DRL mode on my front fogs or shoving some hi power HIDs units in. I do a fair bit of B road driving at night and like to see where I’m going.

Good news about the MOT.

OEM hids >>> http://www.oemxenonp..._Xenon_Part.htm you might find the Skoda ones or upgrades?

I too thought about buying higher wattage balasts and bulbs and just wiring up to stock wires already there.

Pre FL Xenon headlights here, with ballasts inside headlight cover, should be easy but part of me is saying just leave it be

or you could open your window and use this >>>> http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_7954wt_1250 for those hard to see extra dark bits of road or when some yahoo is driving towards you with Hi beam on.

At least you want get any bulb errors on your dash!!

Interestingly I think I've now managed to track the problem down - it's a manual headlight leveling motor fault...

Well, that was painless :sun: . Bigger bulbs fitted in 2011 TSI Octy & no faults showing :sun:

Except the headlights had to be reset with vagcom when AutoTechnica fitted my new suspension because I took the headlights out to make the job easier. (and it was)
