Diesel vRS More Problematic than Petrol Version ?

Featured Replies

So browsing through this forum I have noticed a trend, there seems to be more problematic PD and CR170 Engines than with the tFSi.

I am researching the Otavia vRS thoroughly so that when I come to view one, or in my case pick it up next week I can pinpoint a fault but in doing this research I dont think I have much to worry about as im getting a petrol.

Is it just me or are there more problems with the Dervs?

No

The End

Quite ^

I went for the petrol because they defo do seem to have far less problems when you only do low miles like me.after doing a bit of browsing about me self i found very few if any problems with the tfsi engine and it is a much better car to drive.

But not your fault

PDs were a bit problematic with dpf issues but no issues with the cr.

that's if you still have a DPF, I've heard some have gone missing

On a recent trip to Brighton the taxi that picked us up from the Hotel had 370K on the clock, even I was amazed as it was a 07 plate Vectra

80k on a skoda, No problem

I have owned Vrs PD since July 2008. 35000 miles. 1 dealer visit when still under warranty (radio aerial amplifier went!). Thats all. The most trouble free car I have owned.

Just searched for vrs faulty in the octy MKII forum here are the results

There seem to be more diesel topics than petrol, a lot of starting faults

The reason of this thread is not to upset people, just research on which model is more reliable, but like you said bucksoctavia you havent had any problems with your PD so it might be a concentrated portion of owners, then again a lot of forums are used to help work out problems.

I get the feeling there are just more Diesels about than petrol so you expect more threads..

Diesels will go wrong more as there is more to go wrong in the engine. Fact.

Dont forget that on any forum, you will mainly see requests for assistance to sort out problems, & if there are more diesels bought that petrol, then the law of averages says that you will see more requests for assistance from diesel owners.

However it doesn't necessarily mean that diesels are inherantly faulty.

What in reality it means is that you stand a better chance of being able to resolve a problem. :giggle:

I love comments like this.........and your comment is based on what evidence?

The simple fact that there are more parts & components in a diesel engine. Therefor more parts likely to go wrong.

I reckon its almost come full circle now and petrol engines are once again just as complex, if not more so, than diesels. Compare a current TSi to a current TDi. Not a lot to choose between them mechanically. Ok, no coil packs on a TDi and no DPF on a TSi, but other than that....

The general feel I get is that diesel engines (not just VAG) are more troublesome than petrol engines. It does always seem to be the same things causing problems DPF, DMF, EGR and injectors.

Faults on petrol cars seem to be smaller and less expensive to fix.

I've no evidence for the above just a feel from forums and der interweb.

Not sure if the new crop of small turbo charged petrol units will swing things the other way. It just seems that engines now are run on a knifedge for maximum efficiency.

OK good point, did think of that but didnt put it into theory

Yep, I know, I already said that in my second post in this thread, but still could just be a combination of there being more diesel models

Honest John in the Telegraph (he and / or his website) is in receipt of thousands of letters weekly, most of which are asking him to solve motoring problems.

He has been saying for quite a while now that modern diesels are extremely complicated in order to beat emission regulations and that this makes them problematic and potentially extremely expensive to repair when they go wrong.

He now advises people to purchase petrol cars unless they are doing significant annual mileage.

With the added torque of a petrol turbo and the superb fuel consumption the TSI now provides, the choice should be a simple one unless you do mega miles.

Just my 2p.

The problems associated with carbon build up on modern direct injection petrol engines convinced me to go diesel for the first time.

Diesels are mostly cursed with particulate filters - took care to avoid this. However now begining to realise what a horrific contraption the dual mass flywheel really is. Having said that the crazy fools are now putting them on petrols as well. I think someone somewhare is having a laugh - all at our expense.

DMF is one major reason I sold my last car, that and the fact i didnt benifit from running a diesel other than getting my fuel paid for through the company

DMF even on petrol's are ruining cars these days, yet another trip to Chathams to get a resolution to this clutch and dmf issue and the knocking which was present me and the mrs heard it yet the "master tech" could hear nothing.

I think if you were running diesels with dpf's like they should then you shouldnt have much issue.

Im amazed a cra*py vectra could make it to 37k never mind 370k,must of been a electrical fault on the mileometer! Best thing we ever did was get rid of these horrible cars at work! Always going wrong & costing a fortune to fix.
