Legal off road tracks in the Lakes?

Featured Replies

Graham, can you still drive on Pendine sands?

Or are there any tracks nearby that are suitable for Harry to have a play on?

You know how much I like a bit of getting into the wilderness ;)

Thanx in advance

Pendine Sands was unfortunately closed by the local council a couple of years ago, I'm afraid.

I'm at work, so don't have my maps with me, but I do know of one down that way. Will have a look when i get home and PM you any refs.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

I didn't get a chance to do any offroading anywhere.

As wife recovering from injury we ended up doing what we don't normally do and drove, and drove.....

we only covered 1000 miles in 5 days. Lakes & Dales. Will post some photos later after I've had some sleep. Just arrived home from driving 380 miles in under 8 hours. Lots of slow stuff in the Dales.

We love it up there.

Need to visit the other 'God's own country' soon as well Llanigraham :giggle:

We're going up for a week on Friday.

Going to the gower peninsula this time.

It'll make a change from the brecons and snowdon area.

As the song says "We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides"

CFB,

Extra to my PM, there's nothing down on the Gower!

There are some very good pubs though.

...and some stunning beaches!

In 2000, we were on holiday in Wales & staying near HaverfordWest, but on one day of our travels, we ended up at Pendine (as I wanted to go in 'The Museum Of Speed' - which was closed!!)

So, as it was legal then, we drove on the beach,

Bloody hell, it's a good length of sand!!!, no wonder it was used to British Land Speed Record attempt, & latterly by Top Gear

Until we got to about 3 miles up it, & started to slow down very rapidly................ we'd found the patch of soft-sand & were 'dragging axles'

The Mud-Terrains did manage to get us out, with a bit of 'rocking' in low-range/centre diff-lock.

I still recall that the drive back was a lot quieter than the drive along the beach  (oh, & the tide was coming too!)

For Grahams information; it was an early 300Tdi. Coming down through the centre of Wales (A470??) was fun, it was certainly capable of keeping to the legal limits & embarrassing some other cars (still makes me smile)

Digressing somewhat

1. Did any of you know that there is (or was, if it's gone as part of defence cuts) a rocket led railway at the Testing Range in the dunes at Pendine

The Thrust SSC team used it for testing scale models of the design

http://www.iwm.org.u...bject/205083297

It's capable of something like 850MPH in about 1 second!!

2. Also, as shown in the pic, you could drive (circa 1987/88?) on Black Rock Sands at PorthMadoc.

Is that still done??

Pendine Sands were closed to traffic in 2004. Access now is by Permit issued by the County Council, and is still allowed for record attempts, etc.

I did know of the rocket sled. It was quite famous.

Top Gear have used Pendine, but their famous bit with the Hercules was on the other side of the river at Cefn Sidan. That is one of the few beaches on mainland UK that can be used by large aircraft.

Black Rock Sands can still be driven on, as can Newport, Pembs, but on the latter do NOT drive down towards the river end of the beach.

Sadly can't see any footage on 'YouTube' (not sure if I expected there to be any really?!), but I did find this of 'Babs'

Those sections with the (glorious) XKR, the Monaro, & the Teutonics, were on Pendine though, weren't they?

Yes, right up the top end, and they had access through the MOD land, not along the beach.

Went to pendine yesterday.

The museum of speed was closed. Only open from Easter to the end of September.

Very small place and only one exhibit! a vintage motorcycle.

You can see it through the window

The main exhibit, the Parry Thomas car Babs, is put into storage when the museum is closed over winter.

Did manage to find a nice slate track up a steep hill in Marros....

The camera doesn't show how steep it actually was but to give you an idea, the top of the dark area behind is the horizon of the sea.

Can you PM me the MR's please, and I will mark it up as suitable on my maps?

(at work so can't see the photos!!)

More fun and games.

This time on large slate cobbles

I suppose I should really repost these in a new topic?
