Big wheels

Featured Replies

Looks are subjective but I tend to avoid replica wheels. Some are perfectly fine but others are heavy and soft. I hope your new ones are the former.

+1 nice design, fingers crossed on weight and quality.

Crikey!!! Never thought of that. I better get some 2 piece discs to compensate.

I asked loads of questions, except that one!!

Sorry if this is going to pee on your fireworks but If you haven't already pressed the "Buy Now" please reconsider.

I've seen a number of the aftermarket wheels available on eBay buckle very easily. They are not anywhere near as strong as OEM or a reputable manufacturer such as BBS, Speedline, Momo etc. You get what you pay for.

A few years back a friend of mine had one of his copy Audi wheels crack so badly it would probably have disintegrated the next time out and it was sheer fluke he noticed it when washing the car. these were an eBay purchase and thankfully the seller was very good about the whole thing (I think he didn't want a fuss) and gave a full refund.

Now I'm not saying thse won't be OK but they do look rather spindly and bearing in mind you are going to have very low profile tyres on them, don't even think about hitting a pothole because I reckon these will buckle pretty easily.

The other thing to look out for is lots of balance weights come tyre fitting time and for Gods sake don't fit ditchfinder tyres..............

Yep, I'd echo the weight and build quality questions...

Stick with something VAG OEM (can still be heavy, especially in 19" form) or reputable (BBS, Speedline, OZ etc).

Ah well............................ thank you all for your concern but it's now **** or bust. (hopefully not bust) :giggle: :giggle:

Next time let us know before you hit 'buy' :D

Quality varies wildly - hopefully you'll get the ones made out of metal opposed to toffee.

Regarding weight a lot of copy's are quite light for example 18 ch copies can be about 10kg.

Even prestigious alloy wheel companies make dogs - speedline are a good example, I had 8 rims for my integrale only 5 were anywhere near round...

You could always put them on eBay at a later date as individuals to sell to people who also have bent wheels ;)

Well, the good news is the new wheels & tyres are great & each one is between 4--5 lb lighter than the standard 18in VRS wheels :sun:

Any pics yet?

Yes, in the gallery

Looks good, but needs to be lower IMO.

:)

What tyres did you go for?

Looks excellent, needs lowered though as Rob says!

Falken & they feel pretty good. The ride feels no harder than with standard wheels but does feel a little more precise, perhaps because there is more rubber on the road.

& I agree about the lowering. I think a maximum of 20mm but I'm a little reluctant to do it when the car has only done 4500 miles. At least I can sell the wheels, but could I sell the suspension?

4500 miles?!?! My Eibach's were on my vRS after 50 miles!

It does need a drop, 20-30mm should do it. It's just a given really, needs it with standard wheels and it's now more noticeable with the larger wheels.

And yes, suspension is commonly sold on. It's as often seen for sale as wheels and other mods really.

Looks great

OK, Eibach springs, lowered a maximum of 20mm. Do they make the ride any harder?

What about shocks?

Koni FSD seem popular but how does the ride compare to standard because I don't want compromise?

What do people think about the KONI FSD's?

The ride is far softer than the OEM setup. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's true. It offers the perfect blend of comfortable driving that offers little to no body roll in the corners. Fantastic option without going for a complete setup including shocks

Yes, seems that the standard shocks work better with a quality 'sports' spring, which tells me that the OEM setup isn't quite tuned right.

A shorter spring typically means the damper works harder, as there's less spring compression. But in the Octy's case, this appears to be to the benefit of the ride, as the standard shock is able to absorb more of the bumps and lumps that Britain's road network has to throw at us these days :)

That said, I find the Eibach and FSD combo on mine excellent

People often won't believe that having the car closer to the ground will actually help improve the ride - but they need to go and try a few different setups really. The car companies don't always get it quite right, despite their large R&D budgets

OK  what next? with 4 in the car the other day going round a corner the most loaded rear tyre caught the wheel arch liner :bandit: so what next???

Has anyone had experience of wheel arch rolling & or pulling the arches out???/

It's that or skim some metal off the wheel & or off the hubs.

Hopefully, I'm going to take it into Hull to AutoTechnic soon to see what can be done

What width are the wheels, and what offset?

If the wheels are the right size for the car they should not be rubbing!
