The wash itself is not mandatory, but the car has to be presented clean to be tested so by default it basically is. Ramps like this can be found at most filling stations with a wash. As the MOT tests are done at government controlled regional test centres the examiners are civil servants inspecting hundreds of cars a day in a constant flow like a production line, they generally have no real flexibility from the rules as such.

No sorry I don't mate! I'm actually from Ballymena but I was up at the Christmas market so I thought it was the perfect opportunity for a photo!

Here she is, newly plasti-dipped and in winter mode. Great fun in the snow!
