Help - decision time!

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm looking to get a newer Octavia right now, and I have no idea of which of the following is the more economic car - a 2007 1.9 TDI DSG, or a 2008 2.0 TDI Manual?

My current car is a 1.9 TDI manual L&K Octavia Estate, which even with 217K on the clock is returning 50 mpg urban, 58 mpg extra-urban, and 52 ish combined. The last thing I want to do is get a gas guzzler but my budget and time constraints (i.e. before something seriously expensive goes bang on my faithful old beast) have left me with this rather limited choice.

Both of the cars I'm looking at have 45k on the clock, but never having owned a 1.9 TDI DSG or a 2.0 TDI manual, I really don't have a clue what to expect. I guess I'd like to at least 'break even' with what I have now. If anyone has experience of the kind of mpg figures I might expect from these two very different cars, I'd really appreciate it.

I'd be grateful for any advice - even if it's 'steer clear of both of them'!!

Many Thanks

Mark

I would say the 2.0tdi will be the most economical, autos always burn more fuel but that said I've not owned either, just my guess.

All the tests say that the diesel DSG is about 5% less economical than the manual version.

Often a different case with the petrols as that DSG has an extra gear and less drag in the box.

Thanks - that's what I'd thought, but the dealers were quoting a difference of around 2 mpg between manual & DSG. When I test drove the DSG, I was limited to driving on busy urban roads, and the onboard computer was telling me that it was doing around 39, though to be fair it never got above 40 mph! Not really a fair chance to see what it could do.

Go for a second test drive, I did and told them I wanted to take it on a fast road, so we did, I wanted to be sure the car I was buying wasn't going to be under powered.
