No More Scouts ?

Featured Replies

I beg to differ on some of these points.

Please do, its personal choice, its the beauty with modern production techniques & computer design that so many differing models can be made to suit varying tastes. I wont knock the Yeti, great car its just dosent tick certain boxes for me personally. My dream is probably the new Ferrari 4x4 but thats a box that will only ever be in my dreams

It looks like all the 1.8 TSI, 2.0 CR and 1.2 models being dropped, plus the 1.6 TDI 4x4....

Being a Skodaphile , I will want a good basic car with sound 4x4 technology that will go anywhere on a recognised road or track every day of the year .

This leaves a niche area for an affordable Octy 3 Scout .

Skoda seem to be good at developing niches.

I'm not so sure 4x4 is even necessary - the thing that attracted me about the yeti was the ground clearance. I stay on tracks (not necessarily recognised roads), this is a track I travel regularly and even when the yeti has been up to the doors in water and mud it has never struggled. It would have to be pretty bad to need 4 x 4. Maybe a 2WD Octavia with added ground clearance would make sense - it would be cheaper to buy and to tax.

!

Unfortunately for Aussies, VAG Australia has priced Skoda uncomfortably close to equivalent VW products, although usually with slightly better standard features, so Skoda is not the value choice it is in the UK/Europe. The Scout has been the only Skoda model without a VAG competitor until now (we don't get the A4 allroad) and the Subaru Outback has been the nearest competitor.

I've been happy with my Skoda (dealer network not so much), but the Outback hits it for rear legroom. With growing boys, an Alltrack at $10k more (and reasonably equipped by reports) seems like a good choice, barring a Superb Scout :)

Looks like all 4x4 (RHD) model Octys will be canned in favour of the Yeti; as was the RHD Golf Estate 4Motion in favour of the Tiguan. SUV market getting the better of them methinks.

Has anyone heard for a fact the Scouts dropped permanently from the range or just suspended until Mark 3?

Funny - after the dump of snow I didn't think it would be long before pics appeared in the Yeti forum of one in the snow. Seems a common theme with them, along with the naming, to get giddy when one gets through some snow or mud. :giggle:

I think it goes with (a) mindset in the South where snow is more of a novelty and (b ) a certain [misguided] belief that having a 4x4 makes you infallible. In my Octavia in the much worse snows of 2010 and 2011 I used my Octavia to extract a VW Touareg stuck in the snow. We have had snow on numerous occasions this winter and it never occurred to me that I needed a picture of my car in the snow.

My yeti is a jacked up version of my old Octavia with a smaller boot, no more, no less.

After 3 Subaru Outbacks, which are ten a penny in the south island of New Zealand, I took what at the time was a bold step in this part of the world, and factory-ordered a very nicely specc'ed Scout. 18 months later, we have absolutely no regrets. The car has been faultless, superbly built, a pleasure to own. Probably my only regret is that I didn't get a DSG box, but they were not quite available at the time I placed my order. I love its rarity on the road, which is probably not a good thing for Skoda, but pleases me to be driving a car I know to be so good, that is also so uncommon.

So, imagine my surprise when my dealer told me today that it was no longer available to order. Skoda NZ are weighing up whether to import the Superb Scout to fill the void left by the demise of the Octavia Scout. Apparently it would only be a cosmestic change to the current Superb 4x4, in particular there would be no raised ride height.

I've been reflecting on this idea. I really like the Superb and would be very tempted to buy a 4x4 Superb next time around, but the icing on the cake for me would have been raised ride height, which apparently we're not going to get. I'd also want the 125kW engine, but for some reason it's only sold in 103kW form here, with the 2-wheel drive version getting the 125kW motor. So, I'm not sure whether to encourage the dealer to import the Superb Scout. How does the Superb Scout compare with the VW Passat Alltrack in terms of ride height?

Passat Alltrack ground clerance = 16.5 cm (normal Passat 13.5)

Skoda Superb 4x4 = 14.1 cm

Scout 18cm

Passat Alltrack ground clerance = 16.5 cm (normal Passat 13.5)

Skoda Superb 4x4 = 14.1 cm

Scout 18cm

Very interesting. It just confirms to me that Skoda has to increase the ground clearance of the Superb, when it is released in Scout form, to something approaching the Octavia Scout If not, frankly, what's the point of paying a price premium and buying it over a standard 4x4 Superb?

Not seen one live, and I read somewhere that it's being offered as an add-on kit in some European countries but in here http://www.topspeed.com/cars/skoda/2012-skoda-superb-scout-ar124345.html it does not look with any higher clearance.

Also remember that Passat is old from 2005, sure with new facelift and a few new body panels (looking much uglier than non-facelift, boxy and like a blown-up Polo).

So take good care of your Scout and the new one should come in 2014 in all new platform.

That's borne out by a comment from my dealer, who says the Superb Scout will be an accessories package, as opposed to a separate model. Seems pretty pointless to me...

Skoda in New Zealand have just started showing this ad, which includes the Octavia Scout:

Why would you run such an ad after the 4x4 and scout octavia models have stopped production?

We had that advert much earlier this year and there are still Scouts available from stock AFAK, as dealers will have pre orders. Just doubt you'd get a factory order now

Is all this to clear the decks before production gets moved to the old Gaz plant in Russia?

I'd say only as much as its starting to gear up for the Mk3 and Skodas re positioning it's model range.

If anyone spots dealers with new scouts can they pm me or post it please, might consider upgrading if I can find the right spec, already on 65000 in just over 2 years in the present one & the Mk 3 might be a while & will premium prices when it first comes out. Might mean I will have to down grade to an Audi, Lets hope not

Can you expand on this a little more?

Bickertons in Sheffield had a new Scout still in its wrapping, but don't know if it's stock or a customer order that has finally turned up!
