Jason's pikey mod - done & dusted.

Featured Replies

Well, it didn't half feel like a pikey mod to me! Walked smugly out the posh Audi dealer this morning with my bit of plastic arch liner, giggling at the thought that I was about to take a stanley knife to this brand new bit of kit within a couple of hours.

Started off OK - checked where the IC was in relation to the liner, marked out the size of the vent on my own liner, with some white touch up paint lying around, then chopped out the hole. Finally had to cut out the vent from the TT liner - left a good inch around the outside, although at times the knife made better progress than I wanted and its "aim" went a little out my control.

Luckily enough for me, the vent poked through the hole pretty much fine, with some snug merging of my liner with the vent part of the TT liner. There was an issue that the shape was a little different. The vent wanted to be straight, but that part of the fabia liner is fairly bendy. So, this led to a great amount of polyurethane adhesive being used, and attaching it all togther with several clamps, and a liberal amount of self tappers being used.

In the end though, I got the vent well secured in my liner, and everything is now back in place. Looking forward to some slightly "cooler runnings" in the heat of the Summer now. Thanks for the tip, Josh. Here's my little gallery.... ;)

I didn' get a shot of it in.situ unfortunately as now the car is so low you can barely see it.

Price and part number please, Jason? (I know they have been posted already - but this would be a suitable place to repost them.)

nice mod Jase, surely the slamming of the suspension would limit the air that could flow past bacause of less space by the wheels though?

Marginally perhaps - Denis, sorry... you know me with part numbers... I just asked my local Audi dealer for the "offside front wheel arch liner from an Audi TT" - Was

Does this work for the Octavia as well?

I suspect so? Is the intercooler in the same place on a 1.8T as the TDIs?

Offside, yes. And I'm off to my local Audi dealer on Monday.

Tell them to stock up, as there's gonna be peeps coming in, in their thousands after seeing some Devonian messily chop one up with a Stanley knife on the internet.

All credit should go to Josh though who's crack at this first kicked me and others into action.

I've bought mine on Friday, and am starting the job today, unfortunately Motor GP is on and SWMBO is seeing me later so I can't finish it this weekend :(

Its not much of a "job" - took me about 3 or 4 minutes to remove the arch liner, 10 minutes to chop the vent out the TT liner, map out matching hole on furby liner and cut that out. Then another 10 minutes to slap PU adhesive all around it, screw a few self tappers in, secure with clamps, then leave to dry for a couple of hours. Oh, and about 10 minutes to put arch liner back as I forgot where all the Torx bolts went. :o

I was wondering, would just drilling some holes in the arch liner be ok. It would be cheaper (ok I know its only

Why buy a whole new arch liner for the vent? IIRC Nick - ncarring - (and a couple of others) have just taken the old liner off, cut a hole, and pop-riveted mesh over it for the same effect (and looks OK as well).

Looks.

This link makes Jason's exploits look positively professional.

PS: Still haven't found the part number...:(

It's 8N0 821 172 B "WHEEL HOUSING" OS Front.

The http://www.18turbo.com/ttvent.html mod looks excellent and I have done mine the exact same but I used screws, with washers and double locking nuts instead, I then used a bit of industrial super glue (forgot it's name) for any small bits that still petruded, I also differed from Jason in that I used a hacksaw which was more time consuming, but gives a better end result IMO. It did however take me a total of 3 hours from start to finish (including lots of tea breaks) as I havent done anything like this before, so wanted to make sure it was 100% ok.

A very poor sketch that you can hardly see of where we will be cutting

Missed probably the most important picture  but here is the TT Vent on my vRS ( It's actually straight but the curvature of the Arch Liner gives an impression that i've mounted it **** eyed  )

And The final picture with the alloys back on (excuse the extreme brake dust I havent got round to cleaning them this weekend :o)

I have noticed a difference, only small but mainly after a good thrashing the car seems more lively, unsure if this is a placebo effect or not but SWMBO has also commented on how well the car is running or sprinting :D. Also it isnt visible as the last picture shows.

Many thanks. :)

 S'pose I am gunna have to order this part now...

:woot: more fun and games for the weekend :D

Certain parts IMO are a 2 man job, simply to hold the arch liner when cutting etc...

Probably not, I'll get a mate round :D

I battled on my tod, although I got my mate fitting the suspension to hold two bits togther that didn't WANT to be togther whilst I piloted & screwed in a self tapper. :D

Nice to see another person do it though.

Does anyone else think the Intercooler is really VERY small, I knew it wasnt as large as the PD 160, but jeez that is small.

Do you enlarging the pipes from the Intercooler would make any difference?

P1010451.JPG

Maybe if some of the connecting pipes were enlarged the Intercooler would work better, and this would work out to be much cheaper than a FMIC.

I don't think changing pipes will do anything at all TBH. However putting a new intercooler in just might. ;)

There isnt much room at the side though :( I checked carefully and it can only be enlarged by about 10% at the most, unless it wasnt at the same angle in which case you could free up maybe 20-30% if positioned correctly.

I don't think you understood the ;) How about one in a totally different position? :D
