Shocked of the price difference......

Recommended Posts

The passenger side front wheel bearing is out on my Fab Estate, so I've decided to go for both, it does make sense for me in a long run.

First stop local Skoda dealer.......£256.00 A SIDE ???? After "discount" the total price for both supplied and fitted: £482.00 :@

Next:

VW dealer, same job, same original parts.....£350.00 including VAT for both.....

First Independent local with very good reputation £254.00 including VAT

Second local, again with over 30 years in the business very well known and respected locally £175.00 including VAT.

WTF is wrong with Skoda dealers?????

Rant over

1.6 hours per side is the book time from Skoda. Parts are ~£50 a side, means the Skoda dealer is £128/hr, VW is £78, 1st indy is £48/hr and the 2nd indy is £23/hr.

:)

Babs, the price quote for parts alone from Skoda was...are you ready.....£91.03 per side

They're clearly not interested in your business. Overpriced the job to make you go away.

Remember, they're not dealers, they're stealers!

They get a bad rap, but my local dealer is actually quite good. :sun:

That's about right for a dealer, to be honest. It's a big job.

From the soundings I've taken, no more than an hour to complete + belt etc. That's top end pricing to me!

You are in a lucky minority.. Had cambelt done earlier this year: my indy did it all for £250 all in, Stealers wanted just over £800.

Actually laughed out loud and just walked out laughing without saying a word. Think they got the point.

Unit 18 were £300 for cambelt change, but included a water pump.

Got mine quoted at fairly local VW specialist, £180 all in + pump. However the budget this year may well necessitate a diy approach.

In this case Skoda just aren't value for money.

Hi, that's a bit more like it. Perhaps it's a product of living in the effluent south!

I think he was referring to the prices being inflated in the south eg Kent where he lives vs the north (well over the border in this case) :D

Hi, yes Avalon is right it was intended to be a north/south comparison. Sorry for any confusion (I know Scotland well, very nice area by the way). Cheers.

Ali at unit 18 charged me less than that for a wheel bearing, cv joint and gator plus swapping my Gearbox for a spare I had.

Dealers are very expensive these days.

That's my experience. I reakon my local VW guy could undercut, substantially in some cases, almost anything undertaken by main dealer with no loss of quality. I know where I'll be going as & when required.
