Mer Wax...

Featured Replies

hi all

Anyone had any problems with this stuff? I have just used it for the second time...and can confirm it is total crap!!!

After spending 10quid on a bottle I thought it would be quite good stuff, but no, either I am doing something wrong, allthough I have followed the instructions to the letter, or maybe its a bad bottle? Anyway the problem is that it leaves horrendous streaks all over the car that appear to be under the shine (if you know what I mean) no amount of polishing will buff them out, even with a proffesional electric buffer:mad: . Strange thing is though I rewash the car and apply my cheapo turtle wax (on offer 2 bottles a fiver) and hey presto shiny car no streaks.

This is doing my head in as mer is meant to be top stuff (not in the same league as swiss oil I know) so whats wrong:confused:

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Cheers Fram.

I use Mer, on the Superb now and previously on my Octy for 4.5 yrs, and it looked new when I got rid.

I put both shampoo and the wax polish in the same bucket then wash the car, rinse and chamios for a perfect finish. I never wax dry, only ever apply with the wash, or alone in a bucket of water. Again perfect results , no white streaks and a deep shine.

Did you apply it dry or with water?

One thing it doesnt like though is warm bodywork.

Cheers

Andy

Andy,

I think Fram is referring to dark "swirls" under the wax after the polish has been rubbed off. I had the same problem with Mer and I've never used it again - it's crap IMHO. Mind you , I haven't tried putting the wax in with the shampoo - where did you get that tip?!

Rob

The bottle says it can applied to wet or dry bodywork. I therefore thought it worth sticking in with the wash to save time, effort and bleaching black trims. Try it and you will see.

hi guys

thanks for the tip Andy will try that seeing as I have most of the bottle left and yes Rob those streaky swirls are exactly what I am referring too!!! Just a thought but I have a dark green car....Just wondering if its more noticeable than on lighter coloured cars? hmmmm.....

Cheers Fram

I've used Mer too, it's hard work! :( I found there was an issue with the time you left the polish before cleaning/buffing it off. Seemed to be that if left too long thats when the problem occurred.

Following on from Kentish's idea Mer now make a shampoo, which must be watered down version of the polish. I've used this with much more success, in fact I used it my pressure washer. Cold high pressure rinse first, then add the shampoo through the lower pressure jet, then rinse off at high pressure, brief session with a chamois and I was really surprised by the results. It even did a great job on the alloys. I guess this supports the notion that it is better not to apply itto a dry car

I have used Mer too, and I found it fine dry or wet even though dry makes you work out! Wet is the way I mainly use it but has anybody else found that bloody child proof lock a nightmare to get off? I resulted in chipping it off against a wall when I lost my temper with it!

Yes those tops are a nightmare to get off if you do them up anywhere near half tight, I now dont bother doing them up and just pop the top on and leave it.

As regards the mixing of Mer with water again, I also put the shampoo in the same bucket at the same time thus reducing the amount of work needed, but giving the same excelant results. (not sure if I made that clear earlier)

Cheers

ps...my Superb is dark metallic blue.

Ahh yes the childproof cap. I have found a knak to the one on mer containers. On the top is a small arrow, the technique is to apply the presure where its pointing, works everytime.

I dont really have a problem with the polish, it did wonders to Jon's old miltek exhaust. I now use a better wax on the car now though in the form of meguires.

I'll say it again, i have always used Mer and never had a problem.

I've had Red, Light Blue, Green, Dark Metallic Blue, Black and now Silver cars and its been superb on every one.

It worked miracles on a rather faded red Mk1 Astra GTE i had, it brought the shine back in a way i thought was impossible.

All i can suggest is, always apply it with a damp cloth, and make sure the car is clean & dry before you polish it.

I start with the roof first, then do the sides, bonnet & rear. By the time you've finished applying the polish, then buff it up in the same sequence. I also use it on the windows...but NEVER the windscreen. Though its ok on the windscreen in "diluted" form.

Also, give the bottle a damn good shake first, as the polish can "settle" in the bottle if its been on the shelf a while.
